Health workers have been among the worst hit, with 340 deaths out of 592 cases. There has also been one confirmed case in Spain, a nurse who has recovered. The WHO believes that the number of deaths is likely far higher, given the difficulty in collecting comprehensive figures and with Ebola having a high fatality rate. India, US agree to boost trade, investment ties to create more jobs New Delhi : India and United States have agreed to enhance bilateral trade and investment ties for promoting economic growth and job creation in both the countries. Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and US Trade R e p r e s e n t a t i v e Ambassador Michael Froman met in New Delhi yesterday for the eighth ministerial-level meeting of the India-United States Trade Policy Forum (TPF). A joint statement issued at the end of TPF meeting said, both sides agreed to establish a new technical dialogue to promote cooperation on plant health, animal health, and food safety issues to facilitate movement of agricultural goods. Both the countries noted the importance attached to the Trade Policy Forum by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Barack Obama to further stimulate bilateral trade and investment. India and the United States also agreed to increase engagement on services and investment issues. The two sides also agreed to exchange information on stakeholder participation in the framing of trade and investment policies and procedures, and to discuss best practices. Coastal security strengthened after 26/11 terror attacks: Govt. New Delhi : As Mumbai today remembers and pays tribute to the victims and martyrs of the horrible 26/ 11 terror attacks, the government has assured that coastal and maritime security has been substantially strengthened since the dreadful incident. A press release issued by the Ministry of Defence said that overall maritime security is much stronger today due to successful implementation of technical, organisational and procedural initiatives, by all maritime security agencies. On the 6th anniversary of the Mumbai terror attacks, the Indian Navy, along with the Coast Guard and Indian Air Force are currently conducting the annual Defence of Gujarat Exercise for five days. Over 30 ships and submarines and aircraft of the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Coast Guard and State agencies have been deployed for this exercise off the Western Coast of India. During this exercise, defense of the offshore oil production areas will also be tested. This exercise will provide an opportunity to fine tune Standard Operating Procedures and test new operational concepts so as to be better prepared to prevent 26/11 like incident. The press statement adds that coastal patrolling by Navy, Coast Guards and marine police has increased sharply since 2008 and as a result, potential threats are being detected and actions are taken to mitigate them in good time. It adds that inter-agency coordination, between nearly 15 national and state agencies has improved dramatically, only due to regular “exercises” conducted by the Navy in Govt plans to offer interest subsidy on housing loans for economically weaker sections New Delhi : Government is considering to offer interest subsidy on housing loans to help economically weaker section and lower income group people. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a Realtors Conclave in New Delhi yesterday, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister Venkaiah Naidu said, the interest subvention scheme will be a part of the new housing policy. Responding to Realtors’ demand for single-window approval, the Minister said, the procedures for getting the approvals relating to environment and aviation clearances will be simplified. On the Real Estate Development and Regulatory Bill, Mr Naidu said, it is in the final stage of consultation. The Bill provides for mandatory registration of all projects, besides compulsory disclosure of information like details of promoters, layout plan, land status, schedule of execution, status of various approvals and carpet area. The Bill seeks to enforce the contract between the developer and buyer and provides for quick remedial measures in case of disputes. No immediate plan to remove subsidy on LPG: Petroleum Minister New Delhi : The Government does not have any immediate plan to remove subsidy on the LPG, Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan said this in Jamshed Pur on Monday. His statement came after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on Friday that the government was considering doing away with the cooking gas subsidy for the well-off. Mr. Pradhan said the issue should be debated as who should get the subsidy and who should not. He said the people, particularly the affluent class of the country, must think whether subsidy should continue, if they want the country to develop. No case of Ebola virus disease reported in India so far: Health Minister New Delhi : No case of Ebola virus disease has been reported in India so far. Health Minister J P Nadda stated this in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. He said the Government has taken a series of measures to prevent entry of Ebola disease into the country. Passengers coming from affected countries are being screened at international airports and major ports. National Institute of Virology in Pune and National Centre for Disease Control in Delhi are testing clinical samples of high risk passengers. all the coastal states. Meanwhile,the Defence Ministry has also adopted modern technical measures for coastal surveillance, by way of a chain of 74 Automatic Identification System receivers, for gapless cover along the entire coast. Govt accepts proposal to ban sale of loose cigarettes New Delhi : Union Health Minister JP Nadda has said that the Government has accepted the proposal to prohibit the sale of loose or single stick of cigarette and increase the minimum legal age for sale of tobacco products. In a written reply, Mr Nadda informed this to Rajya Sabha yesterday. The proposal mooted by an expert committee set up by the Health Ministry also recommended increasing the fine or penalty amounts for violations of provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, as well as making such offences cognizable. However, the proposal is yet to be sent to the Cabinet for approval as the Health Ministry is still awaiting comments from other ministries. The Health Ministry had set up a committee headed by former Delhi government Principal Secretary Ramesh Chandra to recommend measures to bring down the consumption of tobacco products and curb their sale. RBI to sell Rs 12,000 crore govt bonds through OMO New Delhi : Reserve Bank today said it would sell 12,000 crore rupees government bonds through Open Market Operations OMO to mop up liquidity from the system. A RBI statement says that the OMO will be conducted on 1st December through multi-security auction using the multiple price method. RBI has said that it would decide on the quantum of sales of individual securities. It would also have the option to accept bids for less than the aggregate amount of 12,000 crore rupees. As part of the OMOs, the RBI will sale government securities maturing in 2017, bearing interest rate of 8.07 per cent; 2020 bearing interest rate of 7.80 per cent; 2022 bearing interest rate of 8.08 per cent and 2027 bearing interest rate of 8.26 per cent.
