Dear Parents,
The start of a new year brings about a flurry of new year resolutions and I am sure that the Year
11s would have done so as elc began the second term with the Mock IGCSEs.
Mock IGCSEs from 8th – 23rd January for all Year 11s and early IGCSE candidates from
Years 9 and 10.
9th January – 16 Year 10 students accompanied by two teachers, Ms Liteno Lotha and Mr
J.P. Graham, participated in the Harvard Congress Model Asia in Hong Kong. Despite
being the youngest team of 700 participants from 64 IB/Junior Colleges from Japan,
Singapore, India, Canada, Philipines, Jordan, Malaysia and Indonesia, our school team
held their own in their individual committees at the conference. Congratulations to
Matthew Leong who received an Honourable Mention certificate for his outstanding
efforts in his committee. Many congratulations to the school team which comprised of
Hannah Boocock, Kristen Koopsman, Low Seo Hee, Anil Naik, Navin Nair, Matthew Leong,
Arthur Sutton, Sun Shir Ming, Dharani McDonald, Katyani Chhabra, Ler Rui Lin, Arin
Doshi, Natasha Tan, Nur Farah Karim, Patrick Nitschke and Rene Himpe who returned to
school brimming with ideas and excitement over their learning experiences. The team
later shared a video on their trip with the rest of the secondary school.

The Interact Club showcased the highlights of Christmas Cheer (held on Saturday, 7th
December 2013) in a powerpoint presentation at assembly.
As part of the Chinese New Year celebrations at school, Ms Ada, the Mandarin teacher
organised calligraphy sessions during break on 29 th January. Students were given a
mandarin orange as well as the opportunity to try out calligraphy. All proceeds went to
the Malaysian Dylexia Association.
The Year 8s learned about nutrition during their PSHE lessons and on 4 th February they
were given the challenge to produce nutritious and appetizing food for their classmates.

On 6th February, the school hosted a lion dance performance to celebrate Chinese New
Year.

Social Science Day – 11th February. The four

The Performing Arts department put together performances by students to
commemorate the ‘double’ Valentine’s Day on 14th February. The performances were
held in the canteen area as student buskers sang to their hearts’ content.

Our first elc debate team consisting of Tarun Khubchandani, Marie Bozeman, Sofea
Shahaniz and Aditya Mardikar (reserve) participated in the Future Debate series
organised by the Amma Foundation (a non-profit organization for Malaysian Education).
The team debated on the freedom of speech in schools against HELP International School
on Saturday, 15th February and won! Tarun was also named Best Speaker.

Parent teacher meetings for Year 11s were held on 21st February.
Preparations began for International Understanding (IU) Day in May. Year groups drew
lots for the opportunity to feature a zone. This year the Interact Club has decided to
focus on USA (northern and southern states), South America and Canada. Awareness
was raised with the help of a video presentation on last year’s IU Day by the Interactors.
Mid-year exams began for Year 10 on 27th February while the exams began on 3rd March
for Years 7 – 9. All exams ended on 7th March 2014.
The Malay language IGCSE oral examinations began on 3 rd March while the Mandarin and
French IGCSE oral examinations began on 17th March and 25th March respectively.
Performing Arts Day was another resounding success. On 18th March, the Houses
competed on stage to win the coveted trophy, putting up hugely popular songs and
dances. At the end of the competition, Red House walked away as winners with a
dynamic display of artistic and dramatic talents.
19th March: The Year 10s went on a science and social science field trip where they had a
fun learning experience out in nature.
Year 9 parents came to school to meet with the IGCSE teachers on Options Evening held
on 20th March.
The IGCSE Art exam was held from 25th – 28th March.
The Upper Primary and Secondary Sports Day was held on 28th March and changes to the
events were made in view of the renovation work being carried out at the far end of the
field. Our students had a fun-tastic day of exciting and competitive races. At the end of
a hot morning, Red Rhinos were declared the champions of the day.

ECA selections for Term 3 were held on 1st April for all Year 7 – 10 students.
The IGCSE ICT practical exams were held on 2nd April and 8th April.
2nd April: An art field trip to the Bank Negara museum was organized for the Years 10
and 11 art students as well as for the Year 9 students who have selected to study IGCSE
Art next year.
Our school team participated successfully in the Under-13 FOBISIA Games in Brunei from
4th – 7th April. The team returned with a whopping 105 medals (3.8 kg) and 4 trophies.
We came in 1st in athletics, 2nd in girls’ basketball, 3rd in boys’ basketball and swimming.
Year 7 English students took to the stage on 3rd April to recite some poems which they
had learnt in class. Shania Chakravertty recited an original poem which she had written.
Mr Rai held a briefing for all Key Stage 4 students on the IB programme on 4th April.
The Performing Arts Recital was held on 4th April to great accolade. The choirs sang
beautifully, the IGCSE Music students performed confidently, and the other performers
played their instruments enthusiastically.
9th April: The Year 11s visited the Taylors University campus to learn about their options
after the IGCSEs.
Spirit Day and class parties on 10th April marked the end of the term for the students. In
the morning, before the start of Spirit Day, there was a presentation by Sean Wang and
Arthur Sutton, from Year 10, on why they chose to become vegetarians. Food for
thought indeed for all of us. This was followed by the presentation of medals to the
members of the school’s FOBISIA team.
Parent-teacher meetings were held on the final day of Term 2, 11th April, from 9.00 am to
2.00 pm.
Teacher assemblies this term were conducted by Ms Iris (on Visit Malaysia Year), Ms Siti
(on Overcoming Fear) and Ms Shaalini (on Bullying).
