Au XVIème siècle, Catherine
Veillon, dame de Beauregard,
fait élever cette fontaine à plusieurs vasques, ornée de coquillage et de faïencerie, et alimentée par l’eau d’un moulin à
vent.

Ce château a été construit en
plusieurs étapes : au XIIème, XVIème
et XVIIème siècles. Il se peut qu’il
ait été construit par les moines
qui ont aménagé les marais du
Veillon et de la Guittière. Il est
également possible qu’il ait été
construit pour servir d’avant
poste au château de Talmont.
C’était un des relais de SaintJacques de Compostelle. Le parc
du château abrite un chêne vert

Lieu du crash d’un avion allié
pendant la dernière guerre. Les
deux pilotes, Harris et Sammon,
sont inhumés dans le cimetière
de Saint–Hilaire.

dans le village des Hautes-Mers.
6 Moulin à pivot (en cours de
restauration)
Ce moulin date du Moyen-âge.
A cette époque, la tour était surmontée d’une cabine en bois
qui pivotait grâce à une main
courante.
7 Pigeonnier (privé)
Ce pigeonnier, aujourd’hui
abandonné, fût construit en
1722. L’intérieur, constitué de
5 étages de quatre niveaux,
permettait d’héberger 2 000
oiseaux.

This is the site of an allied
plane crash during the last war.
The two pilots, Harris and Sammon, are buried in the cemetery
at Saint-Hilaire.
8 The Fountain of Veillon
(private)
It was in the 16th century
that Catherine Veillon, lady of
Beauregard, had this fountain
built with several basins supplied by water from a windmill.
This fountain is decorated with
shells and earthen ware.
9 Veillon Castle (private)
3 The Village Well
This castle was completed in
several stages during the 12th
and the 16th and 17th centuries.
Its origins are unclear; perhaps it
was started by the monks who
were developing the Veillon and
Guittière marshes or it was built
as an outpost for the castle at
Talmont. It was used as a stopover point on the way to Santiago de Compostella. The castle
grounds contain the oldest holm
oak in the region (hundreds of
years old).

An opportunity to discover Bourgenay, its marshes, its
beach and its forest of helm oak
and pine.
Here you can observe an essaie, a water inlet that supplies
the marshes with salt water.

6 ‘Post’ mill (being restored)
This mill dates from the
Middle Ages. At that time the
tower had a timber cap that was
turned by hand.
7 Pigeon house (private)
The pigeon house is currently
in a state of abandonment; it
was built in 1722 and consists
of 5 floors with 4 levels on each
floor, housing up to 2,000 birds.
A magnificent forest of ancient holm oaks.

The Veillon Beach (in the
picnic area at the car park)
There are two possibilities for
continuing the walk to the port,
either through the Bouries wood
or along the coast, starting from
the bunker, itself a reminder of
the German occupation during
the Second World War.

The Conches (small plots
of land) are marked out by
mounds. They were used by
local people, especially for
growing grapes.
