DECISION: Revised M.Ed. and C.A.S. Reading Degree Program
RATIONALE: The changes being made to the Reading Program are based on candidate feedback, the need to
meet the minimal requirements of ISBE in the foundational area of literature for youth, and the need to
reduce confusion for students, advisors, scheduling, and administrators, as well as for reporting assessment
data to professional organizations (International Reading Association) and NCE.

CURRENT PROGRAM AUTHORIZATIONS:
M.Ed. and CAS degrees in the Reading Program are authorized to be offered by the Illinois Board of Higher
Education (IBHE) to be offered in NLU’s four home campus Illinois Regions (Chicago, North Suburban, South
Metropolitan, and West Suburban) as well as in the Fox Valley Region.

Teach-Out
 All students admitted in Fall 2014 or earlier to the Reading Program have the option of taking RLL 520 for 2
SH. For purposes of the teach-out only, RLL 520 may be offered for 2SH during the Winter 2015 term
on the Chicago campus.
 RLL 528 for 2SHs will become inactive Winter 2015 and will only be available for 3 SH thereafter.
All other newly admitted candidates will take RLL 520 and RLL 528 for 3 SH as offered. Students previously
admitted to the program who have been away from NLU for more than one year must adhere to the new
program requirements.
Implementation
 Changes need to be entered in Banner, CAPP, and NLU web pages as appropriate.
 Changes need to be entered in all marketing and print materials.
 Staff in the Registrar’s Office, Admissions, Enrollment Management, and Marketing need to be
knowledgeable about the changes.
 The revised catalog copy will be written by the Assistant Registrar for Catalogs for the next edition of
the 2014-2015 catalog.
