A VISION OF A
HEALTHY FAMILY LIFE
The vision of Sophia’s Hearth Family Center (SHFC) is that every family be supported to
create a healthy family life so that children develop and flourish with joy, strength and confidence.
Sophia’s Hearth Family Center is committed to changing the world for families
with young children, for families, and early childhood professionals out of the resources
of Waldorf Early Childhood Education, Rudolf Steiner’s insights on human development
and education alongside the insights of the Pikler Institute in Hungary.
Sophia’s Hearth Family
Center was incorporated
as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
in 1999. Programs for
parents began with a playgroup program at Antioch
University New England.
SHFC outgrew this donated
space and their first actual
program location was created in the autumn of 2002.
In 2010, construction was
completed on their permanent home at 700 Court
Street in Keene. Sophia’s
Hearth Family Center is a full member of the Waldorf
Early Childhood Association of North America.
Sophia’s
Hearth Family Center
touches lives
in many ways:
As a center of
support for
parents and
families, offering
parent and child
playgroups throughout the week beginning when babies are
four weeks old; As a support for working families and their
employers, offering childcare for infants and young children;
As a professional development center, offering professional
development programs throughout the year from a morning’s
workshop to a full year’s part-time training course.
10
SHFC is internationally
known for its work in
early childhood education. Professional development
students and faculty come
from all over the United
States and Canada as well
as abroad.
After years of program
development and refinement, including building a
diverse and gifted faculty,
the Professional Development Center at Sophia’s
Hearth has received long
hoped-for recognition
from the Waldorf Early
Childhood Association of
North America (WECAN)
as a “Developing Teacher
Education Institute”. Students will now receive a new recognition for their completion of 400 hours of study in two levels and their certificates
will now read “This training/certificate is recognized by the
International Association for Steiner/Waldorf Early Childhood Education.”
