3. TESTS PERFORMED
3.1 Protection against solid foreign objects (first characteristic numeral 6 –
Dust tight)
3.1.1 Test method
According to clauses 13.4 and 13.6 of EN 60529:1991 + A1:2000;
Appliance is placed suspended in a dust chamber filled with talcum powder capable to pass through a
square meshed sieve the nominal wire diameter of which is 50 µm and the nominal width of a gap
between wires is 75 µm.
The suction hose is connected to the predisposed pipe fixed on the appliance to provide the required
depression inside the appliance.
The volume of the appliance is calculated.
The value of depression applied shall draw into the enclosure of appliance a volume of air of 80 times
the appliance volume without exceeding the extraction rate of 60 volumes per hour. In no case the
depression shall exceed 20 mbar. For an extraction rate from 40 to 60 volumes per hour, the test
duration shall be 2 hours. For an extraction rate less than 40 volumes per hour, the test continues until
80 volumes of air are extracted or until 8 hours are elapsed.
At the end of the test shall be no evidence of deposit of dust inside the enclosure of appliance.

3.2 Protection against water (second characteristic numeral 8 – Protected
against the effects of continuous immersion in water)
3.2.1 Test method
According to clauses 14.2.8 and 14.3 of EN 60529:1991 + A1:2000;
The test is made by completely immersing the enclosure in water in its service position as specified by
the manufacturer so that the following conditions are satisfied:
a) the equipment under test is located 2 000 mm below the surface of the water;
c) the duration of the test is 24 Hours;
d) the water temperature does not differ from that of the equipment by more than 5 K.
At the end of the test shall be no evidence of ingress of water inside the enclosure of appliance.
