• In the 26th all-time meeting between the two schools, Pitt welcomes Miami to the Petersen Events
Center on Super Bowl Sunday. The Panthers enter Sunday’s contest at 13-7 overall and 3-4 in the
ACC, while Miami is 15-5 overall and 5-2 in league play. Sunday’s game is pivotal as both teams eye an
NCAA berth in March.
• Senior guard Brianna Kiesel scored 13 points in Pitt’s loss at Duke on Thursday, and in the process,
went over 1,700 career points. Kiesel is also approaching another milestone of becoming just the second player in program history to have over 1,000 career points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists. Kiesel
is one rebound shy and 10 assists away from joining Laine Selwyn (1999-03) as the only two players
at Pitt to accomplish the feat. Along with ranking 7th in career points, Kiesel is eighth in career assists
(390).
• Sophomore Fred Potvin provided a nice spark off the bench at Duke by scoring 11 points on 3-of-7
shooting from long range. It was her irst game in double-digits since she had 12 points vs. Delaware
State back on Dec. 30. It was her ifth game overall this season scoring 10 or more points and she currently ranks 10th in the ACC with 2.0 made 3-pointers a game.
• The Panthers forced Duke into 25 turnovers, which is a new season-high in turnovers. Pitt is creating
16.4 turnovers per game and their +2.7 turnover margin ranks eighth in the ACC. Pitt also ranks third
in assist/turnover ration at 1.2.
• Sophomore Adrienne Motley is the team’s leading scorer at 16.6 points per game. Earlier this season
she had 32 points against No. 4 Notre Dame to lead the Canes to a 78-63 upset victory. For her efforts,
she was named ACC and National Player of the Week.

GAME NOTES
Last Time Out: #17/16 Duke 62, Pitt 45
DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball team (13-7, 3-4
ACC) sustained a 62-45 loss to No. 17/16 Duke (15-6, 6-2 ACC) on Thursday night at
Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Despite forcing a season-high 25 turnovers, it was a tough shooting night for the Panthers who inished the game at 29 percent overall (18-of-62). The Blue Devils’ length
and 2-3 zone disrupted the Panthers all night and forced Pitt into 7-of-29 shooting
from long range.
Duke also controlled the boards and held a 44-26 advantage on the glass. Pitt was
outscored 34-16 in the paint. `
Duke took an 8-5 lead into the irst media timeout, but then used an 11-3 run which
resulted in a Suzie McConnell-Serio timeout at the 12:04 mark with the Blue Devils
ahead 19-8. Duke scored 14 of its irst 19 points in the paint.
The Panthers forced seven early turnovers, but Duke held Pitt to 4-of-16 shooting to
open the game. The Panthers were 8-of-29 overall in the irst half, and despite backto-back triples from Brianna Kiesel and Fred Potvin to end the half, Duke led 36-20 at
the break.
Kiesel scored 10 of Pitt’s 20 points in the opening stanza, and in the process went
over 1,700 career points. However, Duke held Pitt to zero second chance point by outrebounding the Panthers 22-13 and 18 of those came on the defensive glass.
Out of the locker room, Pitt held Duke to 2-of-7 shooting and turned the Blue Devils
over nine times, but the tough shooting night continued and Duke ran its lead to 4629 with 10:26 remaining.
There would be no quit in the Panthers though, and a driving layup from Stasha Carey
made in 48-35 with 8:01 left; however, the Blue Devils scored the next eight points to
extend its lead to 56-35 after a steal and layup from Ka’lia Johnson with just over six
minutes remaining.
Kiesel inished with 13 points, while Potvin provided a spark off the bench with
11. Monica Wignot and Yacine Diop inished with a team-high ive rebounds, while
Wignot added eight points and Diop six.
The Blue Devils had three players in double- igures, while two of them, Azura Stevens
(14 points, 12 rebounds) and Oderah Chidom (10 points, 10 rebounds) went for
double-doubles.
The Panthers return to action this Sunday at the Petersen Events Center when they
host the 15-5 Miami Hurricanes. Tip is set for 1 p.m.

AP TOP 25 - Week 12
Seniors Step Up in OT at Georgia Tech:
In Pitt’s 75-72 overtime road win at Georgia Tech, all
three seniors made huge plays to help the Panthers
pull out the victory. Brianna Kiesel and Monica Wignot
combined to score all 11 points (three 3’s and two
FTs). Kiesel opened the OT scoring with a triple, while
Wignot’s irst three of OT tied the game at 70, and
her second put the Panthers ahead for good, 73-72.
Cora McManus maybe had the play of the game as she
grabbed a defensive rebound with :40 to go and called
a timeout in the midst of a triple team. Kiesel would
make two FTs on the next trip to seal the victory.
Pitt Knocks Off No. 8/6 UNC:
The Panthers defeated #8/6 North Carolina by the
score of 84-59 on January 8 at the Petersen Events
Center. The win matched the highest ranked team the
Panthers have defeated in program history, and it was
their irst win over a ranked opponent since 2011. Pitt
also beat the eighth-ranked team back on Dec. 7, 2008
when the Panthers topped Maryland 86-57.
Kiesel Named ACC Player of the Week:
Brianna Kiesel was named the ACC Player of the Week
on Dec. 29, marking the second time in her career she
had been honored with that award. The distinction
came on the heels of scoring a career-high 30 points on
8-of-11 shooting and 14-of-16 at the free throw line vs.
Saint Francis. She also added six rebounds, ive assists
and a career-best seven steals in the 97-59 victory.
Kiesel is the only Pitt Panthers to ever be named ACC
Player of the Week.
Sharing is Caring:
The Panthers are third in the ACC in assist/turnover
ratio as a team at 1.2. Pitt averages 16.4 assists per
game, while only turning the ball over 14.1 on average.
Brianna Kiesel is leading that charge as she ranks 1st
in the ACC in both assists (5.1) and assist/turnover
ratio (3.0).
Pitt Sets Petersen Events Center Home Win Streak:
The Panthers won nine straight non-conference games
at home, which is a new Petersen Events Center record.
The 2008-09 team had the previous record of eight
home wins. After a season-opening loss to
Princeton, the Panthers reeled off nine consecutive
victories. The Panthers are 11-3 at home this season.
Diop Named ACC Freshman of the Week:
Forward Yacine Diop was named the ACC Freshman
of the Week on Monday, December 8, for averaging 18
points and 9.5 rebounds in two games vs. Ohio State
and Duquesne. Diop shot a combined 65.4 percent
from the loor in those two games (17-of-26). She
became the irst-ever Pitt player to earn ACC Freshman
of the Week recognition.
Pitt Defeats Ohio State in ACC/Big Ten Challenge:
Participating in its irst-ever ACC/Big Ten Challenge,
the Panthers went into Value City Arena and defeated
Ohio State by the score of 78-74. The Panthers had four
players score in double igures, but Freshman Yacine
Diop made the clutch play of the game by grabbing an
offensive rebound 10 seconds left to essentially ice
the game. The ACC and the Big Ten tied this year in
the challenge and now the ACC is 6-0-2 all-time in the
battle for conference bragging rights.

HEAD COACH SUZIE MCCONNELLǧSERIO
147-95 | 8th season overall • 24-27 | 2nd season at Pitt
Suzie McConnell-Serio, one of the most
decorated players in the history of women’s
basketball, was named the head women’s basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh
on April 12, 2013 - the eighth in Pitt history.
A member of the Women’s Basketball Hall
of Fame and a two-time Olympic medalist
as a player, McConnell-Serio arrived at Pitt
on April 12, 2013, following an impressive
six-year tenure at neighboring Duquesne. She
led the Dukes to ive consecutive 20-win campaigns for the irst time in the program’s history.
From 2003-06, she was the head coach of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx.
Inheriting a team that inished 10-22 the previous campaign, she immediately turned the franchise around by guiding the Lynx to a single-season record 18 victories and their irst-ever playoff berth. The following
year, McConnell-Serio piloted Minnesota back to the playoffs, earning a
franchise-best No. 3 seed in the Western Conference and 2004 WNBA
Coach of the Year honors.
Prior to her WNBA coaching tenure, McConnell-Serio coached at nearby
Oakland Catholic High School (1990-2003). She irmly established its
girls’ basketball program as a perennial Pennsylvania power, leading
the Eagles to three PIAA Class AAAA championships and inishing as the
state runner-up twice.
McConnell-Serio’s own scholastic basketball career began here in Western Pennsylvania, where she was a Parade All-American and four-year
starter at Seton-La Salle High School. As a senior she led the Lady Rebels
to a 35-1 record and the PIAA championship. She also led the softball
team to the WPIAL championship as a .500 hitter and was selected the
Female Athlete of the Year by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
McConnell-Serio went on to star at Penn State (1984-88) and set NCAA
Division I records for career assists (1,307), assists in a season (355)
and single-season assists per game (11.8) – two of those records still
stand today. She became the irst player in program history to be named
a irst team All-American and was also a four-time All-Atlantic 10 honoree. McConnell-Serio was the 1988 recipient of the Frances Pomeroy
Naismith Award, presented to the nation’s best senior player under
5-foot-8.
McConnell-Serio was the point guard for two Olympic teams, winning a
gold medal at the 1988 Games in Seoul and a bronze in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
McConnell-Serio was drafted in the second round (16th overall pick) by
the Cleveland Rockers in the 1998 WNBA Draft and played three decorated seasons. In her initial campaign she was honored as the WNBA
Newcomer of the Year and selected irst team All-WNBA.
McConnell-Serio was selected the irst Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the
Year in 1999, repeating the honor in 2010. Sports Illustrated named
McConnell-Serio the best 5-foot-4 basketball player - male or female - of
all-time. She additionally was named to the USA Today All-Time Women’s Basketball Team.
McConnell-Serio and her husband Pete are the parents of four children:
Peter, Jordan, Mandi and Madison.
