In the past, TPA has invited college journalists to participate in their “drive in” training event during their
annual convention. This year, with the support of the
foundation, a summit is being planned for collegiate
journalists in the state.
Thanks to the assistance of TPAF, the cost to attend
this event is minimal. Student registration is $15 per
student. Faculty registration is $50. This basically covers the cost of the governor’s luncheon with the state’s
publishers. TPAF is underwriting the cost of the lunch
for the students and the cost to provide leaders for this
event.
Lunch registration is limited to the first 60
students registered.
Kevin Schwartz, called “ the dean of collegiate media,” is president of
Schwartz Media Solutions, a firm based in St. Petersburg,
Fla. He served 20 years as the publication director of The
Daily Tar Heel, the award-winning newspaper serving the
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Schwartz was
the founding executive director of the N.C. Collegiate Press
Association. He’s also worked as a reporter and editor for
the Charlotte News and the Raleigh News & Observer. He
was owner, editor and publisher of the Outer Banks Sentinel
from 1999 to 2004.
Kevin Slimp is known to many in the journalism world as “The News
Guru.” Kevin speaks at dozens of industry conventions
and events each year in both the U.S. and abroad. He is a
favorite keynote speaker in the newspaper world and the
facilitator of a recent survey of more than 600 newspaper
publishers in North America. Kevin has worked as a consultant for thousands of newspapers and joined forces with
Kevin Schwartz this year in combining their efforts to “keep
collegiate media real.”
