February
by Erik Kalstrom
Theater
After some much deserved real life intermission, theater returns for
this year. The Turn of the
Screw, adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher from Henry
James’ story, is a story of
haunting visitations and
uncertain perceptions as
a governess raising two
children begins encountering spirits bearing hidden knowledge. Debate
what’s real or not, whether it’s all perception or if
the spiritual does exist.
The Underground, February 5–7, 7:30PM (duluthplayhouse.org).
Renegade Theater’s offering this month is the
embroiled, steamy, and
rocking opera Murder
Ballad, written by Julia
Jordan and directed by
Andy Bennett, with music
by Juliana Nash. Sara is
caught between her present and her past, in the
eternal love triangle between Tom and Michael,
but this time with more
spice and energy. And
murder ballads, which
are exactly what they
sound like. Teatro Zuccone, February 5–7, 12–14
& 19–21, 8PM (renegadetheatercompany.org).
The Duluth Playhouse
is putting on a production of a classic of deceit
and death. Tennessee
William’s Cat on a Hot
Tin Roof. The birthday
of a Mississippi Delta patriarch brings the whole
family together to decay
into their hidden selves.
With the holidays behind us, safely observe
the chaotic entwinement
of the American family.
Plus there’s some hope
for a future. February

(duluthplayhouse.org).
Get your filling of institutions being mocked with
Gilbert and Sullivans comedic opera Trial By Jury.
Originally shown in 1875,
this light hearted show
is one of Britain’s most
popular operetta. Directed by Jeffrey Madison,
commonly of Lyric Opera
of the North, the opera in
one act depicts the legal
proceedings of a breach
of promise to marry, the
archaic contract wherein
a man’s promise to marry
a woman was commonly
considered legally binding
until the early 20th century. The ing Series” continues with poet

February Delights
In the month of February there
are a great many number of delights to behold!
While all of us are supposedly
“hibernating” and doing our
thing behind the masks of winter,
you and I know that your mind
is only running on one thought:
“When will spring be here?”
Now we know, with all the great
life changing events happening all over this great land in
the past few days, nothing may
have caught your attention like
that latest cold or flu you recently caught. That same influenza
virus which is still sapping your
strength and making your daily
life a painful living misery. Well
I decided to research the topic
a little bit more and see how
the people of the Caribbean relieve their seasonal cold and flu
symptoms. I heard in Jamaica
that the locals tell the jet lagged
and travel-worn tourist who are
catching the local strain of the
flu bug, to drink a glass of rum
with honey and four large lime
wedges squeezed and dropped
into the glass. After sipping the
glass, you must go lay out in
the sun for about twenty minutes and after that you must
go swimming in the ocean for
about twenty minutes. You must
repeat this about three times
and then you have to drink as
much fresh coconut water as
you can handle. It is advisable
to stay away from coffee, cocoa, and tea as they can help
dehydrate you. At lunch time
you must have another glass of
rum similar to the one you had
in the morning for breakfast,
and then you must follow it up
with a large bowl of steaming
fish soup. Repeat the sunbathing and swimming exercise all
afternoon till sunset, eat a large
spicy dinner and get to bed early with the help of about six Red
Stripe beers, the national beer
of Jamaica. In most of the other
island cultures of the Caribbean, fresh fish, leafy spinachlike greens, raw foods, spicy
peppers and a wide variety of
tree fruits are all considered by
one person or another to be the
particular cure for some type or
form of ailment. For example,
the bark of the bois bande tree
is a reputed cure for impotence
in men and the sorts, but I won’t
digress too much into that sort
of folk remedy as I really wanted to help you all with the sneezing and sniffing and not with the
dribbling and drooling. Needless to say in my opinion I think
that the best fruit for helping
your cold or flu would be a pineapple. So this week my buddy
Rafter came over with the flu
and I decided to make up a little
pineapple, rum and habanero
pepper salsa for his affliction.
It was freshly diced pineapples
marinated in white rum with
spices and habanero peppers.
The spices included black pepper, salt, cumin, coriander, fennel, fenugreek, mustard, ginger
root, and a liberal amount of
rum and habanero peppers.
and orange juice for the citrus
agents and then some honey to
mask the bitter taste of some
types of citrus available on the
island. In Haiti they add a couple of onions to a cup of brown
sugar then heat until it develops
into syrup (be careful! I can’t
recommend this recipe or any
other mentioned here, see a doctor is you really are sick), then,
take two teaspoons, followed by
Vick’s vapor rub over your neck
throat, chest, back and nose.
Get into some warm clothes and
snuggle the night away, with a
large drink of water.
From the folks in Trinidad and
Tobago, other than using alcoholic beverages, they chew raw
ginger for one or two days, in
conjunction with a tea made
from fever grass, also known as
lemon grass or citronella. If you
do get sick while on vacation
and forget to bring the Robitussin, no worries. Just ask for the
local stuff, but keep away from
shamans, magic circles, and
Ms. Cleo types, unless you want
to return home with more than
sand and seashells.
In the Dominican Republic,
honey and lemon mixed with a
blended onion for coughing and
chest congestion is one of the
most common remedies around
the island. In Jamaica, again
they boil rose hips together
with garlic for about twenty
minutes. After which, you add Meanwhile, cover your heads,
some fresh squeezed lemon stay warm be healthy and happy.
