PLAYER TO WATCH
#30 Twymond Howard
Junior Forward
Pearl, Miss.
Howard is currently
playing through his
best stretch of the
season, as he has
averaged 18.0 points
while shooting 65.4
percent (17-for-26) in
the last three games.
Included in that spurt
is a dominant effort
against Eastern Illinois
on Thursday, as the
2014 junior college
All-American tallied 22
points and 12 rebounds
for his third doubledouble of the season.
He sank all 10 of his
free throw attempts, becoming just the fourth
Skyhawk in the last eight years to sink at least 10
free throws in a game without a single miss.
The 6-6, 210-pound swingman currently ranks
third in the OVC in minutes played (34.5 per
game) and seventh in rebounding (6.5 per game).
SETTING THE STAGE
The top two teams in the Ohio Valley Conference West standings will clash
when the University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team makes the
short trek to Murray State.
The Skyhawks have won five of their last six contests and are off to their
best OVC start since the 1999-2000 campaign. With a win against the Racers, UT
Martin can improve to 6-2 in league play for the first time in program history.
UT Martin is coming off an impressive 81-51 victory over Eastern Illinois on
Thursday, the program’s first 30-point OVC win since 1997. Twymond Howard (22
points, 12 rebounds) and Marshun Newell (15 points, 11 rebounds) each registered
double-doubles for the Skyhawks, who shot a season-high 60.9 percent.
Murray State outlasted Eastern Kentucky by an 85-78 margin in overtime
on Thursday for its 16th straight win, the third-longest streak in the nation behind
No. 1 Kentucky and No. 2 Virginia. OVC scoring leader Cameron Payne compiled 21
points, 10 rebounds, five assists and six steals for the Racers, who also received
a double-double out of Jarvis Williams (17 points, 11 rebounds).

QUICK HITS
HOT START IN OVC PLAY
The Skyhawks’ 5-2 start in OVC play is
the third time overall and first time since the
1999-2000 campaign that UT Martin began
the conference season with a 5-2 mark (also
happened in 1997-98).
CONVINCING WIN OVER EASTERN ILLINOIS
UT Martin led from wire-to-wire in its 8151 win over Eastern Illinois on Jan. 29. It
marked the first 30-plus point conference
victory for UT Martin since a 92-62 win
against Southeast Missouri on Feb. 20, 1997.
The Skyhawks shot a season-high 60.9
percent (28-for-46) against Eastern Illinois,
who was the OVC’s top team in fewest points
allowed and defensive field goal percentage.
SKYHAWKS’ MAGIC NUMBER: 70
UT Martin is a perfect 11-0 this season
when scoring at least 70 points. In his eight
years as a head coach, Heath Schroyer is 7622 when scoring 70 or more points.
UTM IMPROVEMENT RECOGNIZED BY NCAA
On Jan. 19, Mike Lopresti of NCAA.com
recognized UT Martin as one of 10 midseason
candidates for the All-Improved list. The
Skyhawks were referenced along the likes
of Notre Dame, Maryland, TCU, DePaul, UC
Davis, Hofstra, Cornell, Lamar and Temple.
SKYHAWKS LEANING ON VETERANS
In conference play, UT Martin has four of
the top five players who average the most
minutes played per game. Marshun Newell
(38.1, second), Alex Anderson (36.3, third),
Deville Smith (36.1, fourth), and Twymond
Howard (35.9, fifth) all see the bulk of the
playing time for the Skyhawks.
Overall, Smith leads the league in minutes
played (35.4), followed by Howard (34.5,
third), Newell (34.3, fourth) and Anderson
(32.7, seventh).
SKYHAWKS CRASHING THE BOARDS
UT Martin has won the battle on the glass
in 14 of its 20 games. As a direct result,
the Skyhawks lead the OVC in defensive
rebounding (29.8 per game) and defensive
rebounding percentage (.751).
AVOIDING LETDOWN AGAINST JSU
UT Martin led by 21 points with 15:35
to go against Jacksonville State but later
went scoreless for a span of 8:26 to find
themselves tied at 52-all until a Deville Smith
jumper with 53 seconds remaining provided
the Skyhawks with the go-ahead basket.
ENDING LOSING STREAK AGAINST OVC RIVALS
The Skyhawks’ 63-60 win at Tennessee
Tech marked the first victory over the Golden
Eagles since March 3, 2009 – snapping an
eight-game losing skid to Tennessee Tech.
UT Martin’s 75-72 overtime victory over
Morehead State marked the first win over
the Eagles since Feb. 28, 2009 – snapping a
nine-game losing streak to Morehead State.
UTM PASSES LAST YEAR’S WIN TOTAL
With a 75-72 overtime win over Morehead
State on Jan. 10, the Skyhawks eclipsed their
win total from last season (eight).
The win over Crowley’s Ridge on Jan. 1
was the first time since 1987-88 that UT
Martin has registered eight nonconference
wins heading into conference play.
OFFENSE STRUGGLES AT BUTLER
The Skyhawks had season-lows in points
(37), field goal percentage (.333), threepoint field goals made (two), three-point
field goal percentage (.154) and free throws
made (three) at Butler on Dec. 22. It was
the first time that UT Martin had scored
fewer than 40 points since it scored 35
points at Illinois on Nov. 23, 1998.
SKYHAWKS EARN VOTES IN POLL
UT Martin received one vote in the
College Insider Mid-Major Poll released on
Dec. 18. That marked the first time that the
Skyhawks had tallied votes in that poll since
2008-09, the season of UT Martin’s lone
Ohio Valley Conference championship.
BEST OVERALL START IN 13 YEARS
The Skyhawks’ 7-3 start was the best 10game beginning to a season since the 200102 UT Martin team also went 7-3 to open
the season. Heath Schroyer became just the
second head coach in UT Martin history to
tally seven wins in his first 10 tries, joining
Tom Hancock (1982-83).
ROAD WARRIORS
UT Martin boasts six road victories,
which led the nation in that category for a
majority of the early season. In contrast,
the Skyhawks only had five combined road
wins in the past two years.
UT Martin began the season with eight of
its first nine games on the road, including a
six-game road swing that took place in five
states over a span of 23 days.
SMITH’S HISTORIC EFFORT AT UIC
Deville Smith scored a career-high 26
points with seven assists, a career-best six
rebounds, career-high five blocks and three
steals in UT Martin’s 81-78 overtime victory
at Illinois-Chicago on Dec. 15.
According to STATS, LLC, Smith’s final
stat line marked the first time a player
had 25+ points, 5+ assists, 5+ rebounds,
5+ blocks and 3+ steals in a single game
featuring two NCAA Division-I teams since
Minnesota’s Joel Przybilla accomplished the
feat against Iowa on Jan. 12, 2000.
ALL FIVE STARTERS SCORING IN DROVES
Before starting power forward Myles
Taylor went down with an injury, the
Skyhawks were one of just five teams
nationally to have all five starters averaging
in double-figures in the scoring column,
joining Incarnate Word, St. Bonaventure,
Toledo and UCLA.
MYLES TAYLOR OUT INDEFINITELY
Four-year starter Myles Taylor is currently
sidelined with a pre-existing knee injury. His
return date is unknown.
Taylor, who was selected to the 10-man
Preseason All-OVC team, was averaging
11.1 points on 73.5 percent shooting (25for-34) and a team-best 6.0 rebounds at the
time of his injury, which was suffered at the
end of the first half at Longwood on Dec. 6.
Taylor ranks in the top-10 in seven
different UT Martin career categories: free
throw attempts (549, first); free throws
made (411, second); rebounds (574,
fourth); points (1,342, sixth); field goals
made (455, seventh); blocks (65, eighth)
and field goals attempted (914, ninth).
RECORD-SETTING WIN IN HOME OPENER
In the 115-29 win over Champion Baptist
on Nov. 20, UT Martin set a school record
for biggest margin of victory (previously
76 points against St. Louis Christian in
1991) and also lowest points allowed in the
Division-I era (1992-present).
The Skyhawks used a pair of runs (28-0,
27-0) to break the game open and led by
as many as 89 points late in the contest. All
14 Skyhawks who saw playing time scored
against Champion Baptist.
HUGE COMEBACK AT ARKANSAS STATE
The Skyhawks trailed by 16 points at
halftime and by 19 points with 18:54 left at
Arkansas State on Nov. 17 before staging a
remarkable comeback to win, 75-73.
Twymond Howard helped the Skyhawks
to their first win in Jonesboro since 1968.
He piled up 21 points in a span of 11:19 to
allow UT Martin to keep chipping away at its
deficit. He put the team on his back with 10
points over a stretch of 2:40 at one point
during the second half run.
SMITH REUNITES WITH SCHROYER
The Skyhawk backcourt received a boost
on Sept. 27 when the NCAA approved a
waiver that allowed Deville Smith to play
immediately at UT Martin.
Smith spent the 2013-14 season at
UNLV alongside current Skyhawk head
coach Heath Schroyer, who served as the
Runnin’ Rebels associate head coach. Smith
played in 32 games (18 starts) last season,
averaging 9.7 points, 2.7 assists, 1.7
rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.
Smith played his freshman season (201112) at Mississippi State before transferring
to Southwest Mississippi Community College
for his sophomore campaign in 2012-13.
FRESHMAN WITH MLB CONNECTIONS
Freshman guard CJ Davis grew up with
baseball bloodlines, as his father Mark
Davis played for six Major League Baseball
teams and making two All-Star teams over
a successful 15-year career.
Mark’s best season came in 1989 when
he notched a league-high 44 saves for the
San Diego Padres en route to winning the
National League Cy Young Award.
CJ’s brother Logan is currently playing in
the farm system for the Kansas City Royals,
the 2014 American League champions.
NEWELL’S UTM FAMILY BACKGROUND
Redshirt senior guard Marshun Newell is
the cousin of former Skyhawk All-American
and NBA player Lester Hudson, who earned
a pair of OVC Male Athlete of the Year
awards from 2007-09.
In fact, Newell and Hudson grew up in
the same house in Memphis and attended
the same community college (Southwest
Tennessee) before attending UT Martin.
TOWERING OVER THE COMPETITION
Although he will likely redshirt, freshman
Nick Detlev (7-2) is officially the tallest
player in UT Martin history. He passed
7-footer Ned Rolsma, who played for the
Skyhawks from 2000-02 before embarking
on a successful acting career. Rolsma is
most famously known for his role as Marcus
Eriksen on the television sitcom “How I Met
Your Mother.”

The University of Tennessee at Martin
introduced Heath Schroyer as its ninth men’s
basketball coach in program history on March
20, 2014.
Schroyer, 42, brings 18 years of collegiate
coaching experience to the Skyhawk program,
including seven years as a head coach at the
Division-I level. All six of Schroyer’s stops at a
Division-I institution has culminated in either a
conference championship or postseason play.
A native of Walkersville, Md., Schroyer has
spent the last three seasons at the University
of Nevada, Las Vegas working as the associate
head coach under Dave Rice. The Runnin’
Rebels sported three 20-plus win seasons, a
71-32 overall record (29-19 against Mountain
West Conference opposition) and appearances
in the 2012 and 2013 NCAA Tournaments
in Schroyer’s tenure. He was named a top-15
assistant coach in the nation by Bleacher Report
in 2012-13 and followed that with a top-20
assistant coach in the nation honor by College
Sports Madness for the 2013-14 campaign.
Schroyer coordinated UNLV’s recruiting
efforts since he joined the staff in 2011. The
Runnin’ Rebels’ 2012 recruiting class was
ranked No. 7 in the nation by ESPN and one
year later, UNLV produced Anthony Bennett
- the No. 1 overall selection by the Cleveland
Cavaliers in the 2013 NBA Draft. Bennett joined
Larry Johnson (Charlotte Hornets, 1991) as the
only players in UNLV’s prestigious history be
selected first in the NBA Draft.
UNLV knocked off seven nationally ranked
teams in Schroyer’s first two seasons, including
a win over No. 1 North Carolina in 2011. That
marked UNLV’s first win over the nation’s top
team in 22 years and the first time a MWC
team had defeated the No. 1 ranked team. The
Runnin’ Rebels spent 25 combined weeks in the
national top-25 polls during Schroyer’s first two
seasons, topping out at No. 11 during the 201112 campaign.
The Runnin’ Rebels boasted a pair of
Associated Press All-Americans (Mike Moser in
2012, Bennett in 2013), 10 All-MWC selections,
the two-time MWC Defensive Player of the Year
(Khem Birch in 2013 and 2014) and 2012 MWC
Newcomer of the Year (Moser) in Schroyer’s
time at UNLV.
Schroyer began his collegiate head coaching
career at Portland State, where he took over the
reins in 2002 as the nation’s second youngest
Division-I head coach at age 30.
Schroyer propelled the Portland State
program to new heights from 2002-05. His
teams improved in the win column each season
(jumping up 14 wins from his first to last year),
culminating with a Big Sky Conference regularseason title in 2004-05, which was the school’s
first-ever Division-I championship in any sport.
That season, the Vikings went 19-9 overall with
an 11-3 conference slate. The 19 victories were
the most for the program since the 1958-59
campaign and occurred a year after he guided
Portland State to a top-three turnaround in the
nation during his second year.
At Portland State, Schroyer presided over
six All-BSC honorees, including 2004-05
BSC Player of the Year Seamus Boxley. He
concluded his career as the program’s fourth
all-time leading scorer (1,498 points) and was
also named BSC Defensive Player of the Year in
back-to-back seasons (2003-04, 2004-05).
Schroyer then joined Fresno State University
as an associate head coach under Steve
Cleveland for two seasons, serving as the
Bulldogs’ recruiting coordinator and overseeing
the team’s academic turnaround. Overall, he
coached four All-Western Athletic Conference
performers, including NBA Draft pick Dominic
McGuire.
In Schroyer’s last season on the bench at
Fresno State (2006-07), the Bulldogs went 22-10
with a 10-6 WAC record, earning a trip to the
National Invitation Tournament. That marked
GAME 21: MURRAY STATE • JAN. 31 • CFSB CENTER
the most wins for the program since the legendary Jerry Tarkanian
guided the Bulldogs to 22 wins in 1995-96.
Schroyer parlayed that success into a head coaching gig at the
University of Wyoming from 2007-11. During his four-year head
coaching stint at Wyoming, Schroyer coached seven All-MWC
players, including Brandon Ewing (second all-time leading scorer
in Cowboy history with 2,168 points) and Afam Moujeke (200809 MWC Freshman of the Year after becoming the league’s alltime leading freshman scorer).
Schroyer’s best season at Wyoming was in 2008-09, when he
led the Cowboys to 19 victories and an appearance in the College
Basketball Invitational postseason tournament. He also helped the
program make huge strides academically, as he inherited the worst
Academic Progress Rate (APR) of any sport in the entire MWC.
Schroyer constructed a comprehensive plan that improved the
Cowboys’ men’s basketball APR by 164 points to a program-high
935, which was the third-best turnaround in the nation. He was
also a member of Wyoming’s Academic Integrity Subcommittee
in 2010-11.
Before his head coaching appointment at Portland State,
Schroyer had previously been an assistant coach at Wyoming
under head coach Steve McClain for the 2001-02 season, when
the Cowboys went 22-9 (11-3 MWC) and upset No. 6 Gonzaga
in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to
Arizona. Schroyer was in charge of a ferocious defense that led the
MWC in field goal percentage defense, defensive rebounding and
rebounding margin.
Schroyer’s first Division-I assistant coaching job came at
Brigham Young University, who was a member of the Western
Athletic Conference before joining the MWC for Schroyer’s last
two seasons there.
Joining a Cougar program that had went 1-25 the season
before, Schroyer and Cleveland - the BYU head coach who
13-7 OVERALL • 5-2 OVC
Schroyer would also work with at Fresno State almost a decade
later - engineered a dramatic turnaround that led to a 46-20 record
and pair of postseason berths in the final two years. The Cougars
went 24-9 overall (10-4 MWC) and made an NCAA Tournament
appearance in 2000-01. The MWC championship in 2000-01 was
BYU’s first conference tournament title since 1992, its first regularseason championship since 1993 and first NCAA Tournament
appearance since 1995. The year before that, the Cougars went 2211 and advanced to the NIT quarterfinals.
Schroyer presided over six all-conference honorees at BYU,
including 2001 MWC Player of the Year and Associated Press AllAmerican Mekeli Wesley.
In a coaching career that began as an assistant coach under
Cleveland at Fresno City College in 1996, Schroyer has recruited
or coached over 60 players who have gone on to play professionally.
He has also shared his extensive basketball knowledge as a
television analyst during the 2011 NCAA Tournament coverage
on The Mtn Channel and during the 2011 CBI on HDNet. He also
served as a television analyst for the Utah Jazz during the 2001
NBA playoffs.
Schroyer started his collegiate playing career at Kings River
Community College in Reedley, Calif., where he earned allconference accolades and led the team to the California Junior
College Final Four in 1992. He concluded his playing career at
Armstrong Atlantic State in Savannah, Ga., where he led the team
to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 as a senior.
Schroyer prepped at the prestigious DeMatha High School
program in Hyattsville, Md., where he played for the legendary
coach Morgan Wootten, whose 1,274 wins as a head coach are the
second-most in the history of basketball at any level.
Earning his bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Armstrong
Atlantic State in 1995, Schroyer earned his Master’s degree in
institutional leadership from National University in Fresno, Calif.
in 1996.
Schroyer married the former Kim Ortega of Logandale, Nev.
in May 2014. He has one daughter, Sierra (17) and a son, Hayden
(12) from a previous marriage.

SKYHAWKS BATTLE BUT FALL
79-63 IN SEASON OPENER
AT MARQUETTE
UTM GRINDS OUT 75-73
COMEBACK VICTORY
AT ARKANSAS STATE
SKYHAWKS COAST TO 115-29
WIN OVER CHAMPION BAPTIST
IN HOME OPENER
The University of Tennessee at Martin
men’s basketball team gave a valiant effort
in its season opener at Marquette before
falling by a 79-63 margin at the BMO Harris
Bradley Center.
Down by 19 points early in the second
half, the University of Tennessee at Martin
men’s basketball team staged a comeback
for the ages at Arkansas State, downing the
Red Wolves by a 75-73 victory to give firstyear head coach Heath Schroyer his first
win as a Skyhawk.
A pair of school records were broken as the
University of Tennessee at Martin men’s
basketball team soared to a 115-29 victory
over Champion Baptist in the Kathleen and
Tom Elam Center.
A trio of newcomers led the Skyhawks in
scoring in head coach Heath Schroyer’s
UT Martin debut, led by Deville Smith’s
12 points. Twymond Howard and Alex
Anderson each added 11 points for UT
Martin while Marshun Newell provided
nine points, five rebounds and a team-high
three assists.
Myles Taylor snared a game-high 11
rebounds in only 15 minutes of play
before fouling out, helping the Skyhawks
outrebound their Big East Conference
opponent by a 34-25 margin.
Marquette was led by Jajuan Johnson,
who scored a game-high 20 points. Juan
Anderson (16 points, seven rebounds),
Matt Carlino (11 points, seven assists) and
Deonte Burton (10 points) also cracked
double-figures in the scoring column for
the Golden Eagles.
Down by 43-24 with 18:54 left, Howard and
Newell put the Skyhawks on their back to
post UT Martin’s first victory in Jonesboro
since 1968. The duo combined to score 33
of UT Martin’s 52 points in the final 20
minutes to snap a seven-game skid against
the perennial Sun Belt Conference power.
Howard poured in 21 of his team-best 23
points in the second half, shooting 9-for15 from the floor to go along with five
rebounds, three assists and a steal in 37
minutes. Newell tallied 12 of his 15 points
in the final half, connecting on a careerhigh four 3-pointers (in five attempts).
Myles Taylor narrowly missed a doubledouble with 11 points and nine rebounds
while the backcourt of Deville Smith (11
points, five assists, five steals and three
rebounds) and Alex Anderson (nine points,
three steals) helped UT Martin shoot 56.7
percent (17-for-30) in the second half.
Arkansas State was led by Anthony
Livingston’s 26 points and nine rebounds.
Cameron Golden (17) and Sean Gardner
(15) also reached double-figures in the
scoring column for the Red Wolves.
UT Martin set a school record for biggest
margin of victory (previously 76 points
against St. Louis Christian on Jan. 5, 1991)
and also lowest points allowed in the
Division-I era (1992-present).
All 14 Skyhawks who saw playing time
scored, as no UT Martin player logged
more than 18 minutes of time on the court.
Myles Taylor scored a game-high 18 points
with three blocks for the Skyhawks while
Alex Anderson and Richard Lee (5-for-5
shooting, 3-for-3 from three-point range in
collegiate debut) added 13 points apiece.
Twymond Howard scored 12 points with a
career-best nine rebounds while Marshun
Newell tallied 10 points for the Skyhawks.
Deville Smith handed out a career-high
nine assists (against zero turnovers) and
Khristian Taylor set a new career-high with
nine rebounds.
As a team, UT Martin shot 60.6 percent
(43-for-71), including 14 three-pointers in
29 attempts, falling one trifecta short of the
school record.
Champion Baptist, a member of the
Association of Christian College Athletics
located in Hot Springs, Ark., was led by 13
points and five rebounds out of Stephen
Hurst. The Tigers shot 23.1 percent (12-for52) from the floor for the contest.

71-56 WIN AT NKU
A balanced scoring attack and hard-nosed
defense lifted the University of Tennessee
at Martin men’s basketball team to its
third consecutive victory as the Skyhawks
defeated Bethune-Cookman by a 74-56
margin.
The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s
basketball team went toe-to-toe with Big
Ten Conference member Nebraska before
the Cornhuskers claimed a 75-64 win at
Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Redshirt senior guard Marshun Newell
accumulated his third career doubledouble to propel the University of
Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team
to a resounding 71-56 victory at Northern
Kentucky.
The Skyhawks boasted six players with
eight or more points, led by Myles Taylor’s
16 points. The senior forward out of Little
Rock, Ark. went 4-for-6 from the floor and
sank all eight of his free throw attempts
while adding nine rebounds in 23 minutes.
Marshun Newell tied a career-high with
four 3-pointers, scoring 15 points in 20
minutes. Twymond Howard rode a strong
first half to 14 points and seven rebounds
while the backcourt trio of Alex Anderson,
Deville Smith (five assists, four rebounds,
three blocks, two steals) and Dee Oldham
(five assists, seven rebounds and a steal)
also added eight points apiece for UT
Martin, who shot 52.4 percent (11-for-21)
in the second half and knocked down 88.5
percent of its free throw attempts (23-for26) for the game.
Bethune-Cookman was led by Mikel Trapp
(11 points) and Denzel Dulin (10 points).
The Skyhawk defense held the Wildcats
to 34.9 percent shooting for the contest
(15-for-43) while winning the battle on the
glass (37-28) for the fourth straight game.
The Skyhawks were within four points with
nine minutes left to play in front of the crowd
of 15,987 – the second-largest attended game
in school history. UT Martin stayed within
single-digits for a majority of the time the
rest of the way until the Cornhuskers made
five of six free throws in the final minute.
Twymond Howard led four Skyhawks
in double-figures in the scoring column,
pouring in 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting.
Deville Smith put on a shooting exhibition
midway through the second half, finishing
with 15 points on a career-best five
3-pointers, game-high six rebounds, teambest six assists and game-high three steals.
Myles Taylor sank all seven of his free throw
attempts on his way to 11 points tonight
while Alex Anderson added 10 points for
UT Martin, who knocked down 11 threepointers but committed 18 turnovers and
lost the rebounding battle (34-25) for the first
time all season.
Nebraska, who was ranked at No. 21
nationally for the first two weeks of the
season, was led by 19 points on six 3-pointers
by Walter Pitchford, who entered tonight’s
contest shooting 6.3 percent from threepoint range. Preseason All-American Terran
Petteway scored 18 points with a game-high
eight assists to round out the double-digit
scorers for Nebraska. The Skyhawks held
Shavon Shields, who was the nation’s fifthleading scorer, to five points.
Newell tallied game-highs of 15 points,
11 rebounds, five assists and two steals
in 39 minutes of action for the Skyhawks.
It marked the third time this season that
the Memphis, Tenn. native had scored 15
points while the 11 rebounds equaled a
career-high set against Belmont on Jan. 11,
2014. It also was UT Martin’s first doubledouble of the season by any player.
With the win, the Skyhawks surpass their
road win total from last season. First-year
head coach Heath Schroyer also joins Tom
Hancock (1982-83) as the only coaches
in UT Martin history to win at least four
games in their first six tries.
Alex Anderson added 15 points on 6-of9 shooting for UT Martin while Deville
Smith (14 points) and Twymond Howard
(10 points) also cracked double-figures for

4-for-4 from the floor) helped UT Martin
shoot 61.9 percent (13-for-21) in the second
half while winning the battle on the glass
by a 37-22 margin.

held on to a 60-59 advantage until a turnover
and three missed three-pointers in the final
23 seconds came back to haunt UT Martin.
Deville Smith led the Skyhawks with 15
points while Marshun Newell amassed
his fourth career double-double with 14
points and 10 rebounds. Twymond Howard
(nine points, seven rebounds, three assists)
and Javier Martinez (nine points on 3-of3 shooting and 3-for-3 from the free throw
line) also nearly cracked double-figures
for UT Martin, who committed only five
turnovers for the game but shot 38.6 percent
from the field and 22.2 percent from threepoint range.
Maryland-Eastern Shore was paced by
Devon Walker’s 16 points while Michael
Myers tallied 14 points, 10 rebounds and
six assists. The Hawks shot 51.1 percent (24for-47) for the contest en route to their third
straight road win.

SKYHAWKS PULL AWAY
FOR 84-61 HOME VICTORY
OVER CROWLEY’S RIDGE
UTM FIGHTS BUT COMES UP
JUST SHORT AGAINST
EASTERN KENTUCKY, 66-58
SKYHAWKS CLAIM FIRST OVC
WIN IN 75-72 OVERTIME THRILLER
OVER MOREHEAD STATE
All five University of Tennessee at Martin
starters reached double-figures in the
scoring column as the Skyhawk men’s
basketball team raced past Crowley’s Ridge
College by a 84-61 margin at the Kathleen
and Tom Elam Center.
The University of Tennessee at Martin
men’s basketball team led for a majority
of the game against defending Ohio Valley
Conference champion Eastern Kentucky
but the Colonels made enough plays down
the stretch to hand the Skyhawks a 66-58
loss at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
Marshun Newell poured in a seasonbest 20 points – six of which came in the
overtime period – to help the University of
Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team
seize a 75-72 victory over Morehead State
at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
Deville Smith led UT Martin in scoring for
the seventh time this season, pouring in
17 points to go along with seven assists,
a career-best six steals and five rebounds.
Alex Anderson tied a career-high with 16
points while Twymond Howard racked up
15 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Marshun Newell (13 points, eight
rebounds, five assists) and Javier Martinez
(season-high 12 points) rounded out the
top scorers for the Skyhawks, who shot
57.6 percent in the second half on their way
to matching last season’s win total.
The lead changed hands seven times in the
first six-plus minutes until UT Martin took
a lead with 11:44 to go in the first half. That
lead lasted until the 4:32 mark of the second
half, as Corey Walden – last season’s OVC
Tournament Most Valuable Player – scored
12 of his game-high 21 points in the second
half to lead Eastern Kentucky to the win.
The win was the first Ohio Valley
Conference victory in the young career
of first-year Skyhawk head coach Heath
Schroyer and also gave UT Martin nine
wins – one more than the program tallied
all of last season. The victory also was UT
Martin’s first over Morehead State since
Feb. 28, 2009 – snapping a nine-game
losing skid to the Eagles.
Crowley’s Ridge, an Association of
Christian College Athletics member
located in Paragould, Ark., was guided
by Quinn Cooper’s 26 points and eight
rebounds. Roy Marshall (15 points) and
Skylor Guess (13 points, 10 rebounds) also
led the Pioneers, who were forced into 21
turnovers by the Skyhawk defense.
The Skyhawks were led by a career
performance out of sophomore forward
Javier Martinez. The 6-7, 210-pound native
of St. Croix, Virgin Islands made all six of
his field goal attempts and added five free
throws in six attempts for a career-best 17
points to go along with eight rebounds in
35 minutes. Deville Smith added 12 points
while Marshun Newell (11 points, eight
rebounds, seven assists) had a great allaround performance for the Skyhawks,
who had 19 assists on 20 made baskets.
In addition to Walden, Eastern Kentucky
was led by Denzel Richardson’s doubledouble of 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Timmy Knipp (14 points) and Eric Stutz
(13 points) also reached double-figures in
the scoring column for the Colonels, who
shot 17.4 percent from three-point range (4for-23) but committed only five turnovers.
A trio of Skyhawk newcomers joined
Newell with double-figures in the scoring
column. Deville Smith had 18 points (five
of which came in overtime), while Arkeem
Joseph established new career-highs in
points (18), rebounds (eight) and minutes
played (36) tonight. Twymond Howard
chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds
for the Skyhawks, who made four of their
six field goal attempts and both free throw
shots in overtime.
Morehead State was led by Kareem Storey’s
22 points. Brent Arrington and Angelo
Warner also added 15 points apiece for
the Eagles, who were held to 16.7 percent
shooting (1-for-6) in the overtime period.

UTM DIALS UP 63-60
ROAD WIN AT IN-STATE
OVC RIVAL TENNESSEE TECH
SKYHAWKS ENDURE LATE RALLY
TO PICK UP 55-52 OVC WIN
OVER JACKSONVILLE STATE
UTM BATTLES UNTIL THE END
BUT FALLS AT OVC POWER
BELMONT, 72-67
Long range accuracy and several late-game
defensive stops propelled the University of
Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team
to a big 63-60 Ohio Valley Conference road
victory over Tennessee Tech.
The University of Tennessee at Martin
men’s basketball team staved off a furious
comeback attempt by Jacksonville State
to earn a 55-52 victory over Ohio Valley
Conference rival Jacksonville State at the
Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
The University of Tennessee at Martin
men’s basketball team led for a majority of
the contest at Belmont but the host Bruins
took a late lead and escaped with a 72-67
win at the Curb Event Center.
The win was the Skyhawks’ first against
Tennessee Tech since March 3, 2009 –
snapping an eight-game losing skid against
the Golden Eagles.
As a team, the Skyhawks sank 10 threepointers – the fourth time this season that
UT Martin had knocked down doubledigit treys in a game. Conversely, the
Skyhawks held Tennessee Tech to 27.3
percent shooting (6-for-22) from beyond
the three-point arc.
Deville Smith led UT Martin in scoring
for the eighth time this season, tallying
16 points while burying four 3-pointers
in the process. Twymond Howard and
Alex Anderson also added 11 points for
the Skyhawks, who also received seven
points, seven rebounds and five assists out
of Marshun Newell.
Tennessee Tech was led by Charles
Jackson’s 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Torrance Rowe also chipped in with 14
points and eight assists for the Golden
Eagles, who had won seven of their eight
home games entering the contest.
The Skyhawks led by 21 points with
15:35 left to play in the second half before
Jacksonville State used a 26-5 run to even
the score with 2:49 remaining. UT Martin
senior guard Deville Smith then accounted
for the final three points of the contest to
help the Skyhawks to the victory. The
win marks the fourth 3-1 start to the OVC
season in program history and first since
the 2002-03 campaign.
Marshun Newell tossed in 17 points to
go along with seven rebounds while
Twymond Howard notched his second
career double-double with 10 points and
a career-best 12 rebounds for UT Martin.
Smith chipped in 11 points, six rebounds
and five assists for the Skyhawks, who
attempted a season-low 10 three-pointers
but connected on six trifectas.
Jacksonville State was led by Avery Moore
and Malcolm Drumwright, who each
scored 17 points to lead the Gamecocks’
second half charge.
UT Martin continuously led from the 5:23
mark of the first half until 3:31 remaining
in the second half, leading by as many as
11 points in the second half until Belmont
used a critical 13-2 run late in the game to
claim the victory.
The Skyhawks were led by Deville Smith’s
19 points – all of which came in the second
half. Twymond Howard added 15 points
and a team-high eight rebounds while
Marshun Newell contributed 15 points for
UT Martin, who shot 49.1 percent (26-for53) and outrebounded the Bruins by a 3331 margin.
Evan Bradds’ double-double of 22 points
and 10 rebounds lifted Belmont. Craig
Bradshaw scored 21 points while Reece
Chamberlain added 14 points for the
Belmont, who was tabbed as the OVC East
preseason favorite.

SKYHAWKS SURGE PAST
OVC WEST RIVAL
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI, 70-53
UTM LEADS FROM WIRE-TOWIRE IN BIG 81-51 OVC WIN
OVER EASTERN ILLINOIS
Four Skyhawks poured in double-figures in
the scoring column to help the University of
Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team
pick up a 70-53 Ohio Valley Conference
home victory over Southeast Missouri.
The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s
basketball team never trailed and saw two
players tally double-doubles in a convincing
81-51 victory over Ohio Valley Conference
rival Eastern Illinois at the Kathleen and
Tom Elam Center.
UT Martin led for over 27 minutes of the
game and did not trail after the 3:12 mark
of the first half. The Skyhawks shot 53.8
percent from three-point range (7-for-13)
and won the rebounding battle by a 37-26
margin.
The win marks the first 30-plus point
conference victory for UT Martin since the
Skyhawks defeated Southeast Missouri by a
92-62 margin on Feb. 20, 1997.
Deville Smith tossed in 18 points to lead
UT Martin, while Twymond Howard
accumulated 17 points for the Skyhawks.
Alex Anderson scored 13 points while
Marshun Newell racked up 12 points and
a game-high nine rebounds for UT Martin.
Southeast Missouri was led by 21 points
out of Isiah Jones. Antonius Cleveland
pitched in with 11 points for the Redhawks,
who were playing without leading scorer
Jarekious Bradley.
Twymond Howard accumulated 22 points –
one point shy of his career-high total – and
grabbed 12 rebounds for his third doubledouble of the season for UT Martin. Howard
became just the fifth Skyhawk in the last
eight years to make at least 10 free throws in
a game without a miss (10-for-10). Marshun
Newell also tallied his third double-double
of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds
for the Skyhawks, who shot a season-high
60.9 percent (28-for-46) against the OVC’s
top team in fewest points allowed and
defensive field goal percentage.
The Skyhawks also placed Alex Anderson in
double figures in scoring, as he tied a careerhigh with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting,
including four 3-pointers in five tries.
Deville Smith added 12 points and a gamehigh six assists for UT Martin, who doubled
up the Panthers on the glass (37 to 19).
Eastern Illinois was led by Trae Anderson’s
14 points while Dylan Chatman added 12
points for the Panthers, who were playing
without leading scorer and rebounder Chris
Olivier.
