It is great to see many new and returning faces this year. We have a great program set up for your enjoyment here at Camp P.M.I. Based on our overwhelmingly positive experiences last year, we will continue the program for second-year Goshen campers, which will be explained in greater detail in this packet. This letter and packet provide the information you will need to make sure the scouts have fun. We have provided you with the program for the first two days (Mon., Tues.) of your camp experience. The last three (Wed., Thurs., Fri.), you have the opportunity to pick the program for the boys. Please keep in mind that there are a lot of packs at Camp P.M.I. wanting to do several things at the same time. We will do our best to meet the needs of all packs, while at the same time trying to be fair. In order to accomplish our goals, the Program Request Sheet must be turned into the Administration office by Monday at 7:00 p.m. You and I will sit down to go over your finalized schedule on Tuesday morning. The following provides a list of guidelines to assist you with scheduling choices. The P.M.I. Staff The P.M.I. staff is here to make sure your scouts have a great week, and we can better serve you if you direct your questions to the appropriate staff members. Ben, the camp director, is in charge of general camp operations, health and safety, staff hiring, and program implementation. Dan, the program director, is in charge of program issues, including our program supplies, theme, and scheduling activities. Pat, the commissioner, is in charge of the facilities, including maintenance and supplying the shower house, your sites, and the trails. Any specific issues should be brought to the appropriate aforementioned staff member. The P.M.I. staff as a whole takes great pride in the performance of their roles in camp, so if there is anything that any of the staff can do to improve your experience, please do not hesitate to ask. Hiking Opportunities Hiking is an important aspect of scout life and the camp experience. For beautiful views and memories that last a lifetime, you have come to the right place. A hike to a Boy Scout Camp or 2 miles on Goshen Trails completes one of the requirements for the Diamond “W” Award. A second hike to any of the beautiful vistas around Goshen or to the Maury River is a requirement for the P.M.I. Adventure Award. It is best not to rush a hike both for enjoyment and safety reasons, so please allow about 3 hours when scheduling this activity. Only morning hikes will be approved. We do require that all packs be in camp at breakfast and dinner (evening hikes are not approved). Boy Scout Camp program runs from 9-12 noon and 2:30-5:30 p.m.; lunchtime hikes to these areas are discouraged. Trail lunches are available for you to take on your hike to other areas. If your pack would like to request trail lunches for a hike, be sure to indicate how many trail lunches you will need on your Program Request Sheet. All packs must sign out of camp upon leaving for a hike. The “Camper/Leader Log Book” is located on the clerk’s desk in the Admin building office. Don’t forget to sign back in upon returning to Camp P.M.I. The following is a list of recommended hikes. - The Hike to Maury River (~2 miles one way, from PMI parking lot) is an opportunity to go swimming in a slow and shallow stretch of the scenic Maury River. The hike will lead the boys through Camp Bowman, which is a chance for them to catch a glimpse of Boy Scout camping on their way to a cool, refreshing dip. Parking is available at Camp Post, at more than half the distance to the river spot. - The Hike to Viewing Rock (~1000 feet elevation change and ~1.5 miles away) is a good 3-hour morning hike, with trail lunches as an option. “Viewing Rock” is a large rock outcropping in the mountains that overlook Camp P.M.I. The view is breathtaking. Be sure to bring your camera, binoculars, and full canteen. - The Hike to Jump Rock (~1.5 miles past Viewing Rock) is an extra challenge to continue from Viewing Rock on to Jump Rock. Be sure to plan an additional 2 hours. - The Hike to Camp Bowman (~1 mile) will provide an incentive for the boys to continue in scouting. Follow the Moore Trail south to find Camp Bowman! You can schedule tours only on Friday mornings for either 9 am, 10 am, or 11 am. Parking is also available in the Bowman overflow lot. When scheduling, please specify the activity and program area you wish to participate in. If more than one activity interests you, please sign up for separate sessions for each. Scheduling BB, Archery, Swimming, Boating, and Showers These activities are very popular and require restrictions on the number of boys assigned to them. Only schedule, ONE BB and ONE Archery per day (Specify whether your scouts want to Free Shoot, earn the pin, or practice their marksmanship). If you have showers on Monday, schedule a shower for Wednesday and Friday; likewise those scheduled for Tuesday should sign up for Thursday. The Trading Post is open to those units who finish showers early. If you wish to schedule two swimming times between Wednesday and Friday morning please make sure that one is in the morning hours of program; this will make some prime swimming hours available to all scouts that wish to swim. Please note that due to high waterfront attendance in the afternoons, instructional swim and Aquanaut badge instruction on water rescues will be offered only during mornings. You may also schedule two boating times over these days. (Funoos may only be scheduled once.) Please note the BSA policy for Webelos: Funoos may only be used by scouts who qualify as swimmers. These scouts may also use the rowboats. Beginners and Learners may use the rowboats when accompanied by adult swimmers. Other First-Year Program Choices We have a wonderful variety of programs at Camp P.M.I. The directors and I work hard to put on a program that makes it fun for first year campers. This year each program area is themed for Heroic Adventure! - Handicraft - On Monday or Tuesday your pack will work on Superhero Masks. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday you may choose to work on Tie Dye T-Shirts (shirts available from the Trading Post), Survival Bracelets, and Leather Projects (leather available from the Trading Post). - Scoutcraft – On the first visit your pack will experience the Monkey Bridge and other exciting activities. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we offer instruction in Whittlin’ Chip, Fire Building, and Knots. Scoutcraft also offers the Challenge Course and Orienteering, upon request. These are great team building exercises for those who wish to try them out. - Nature - Programs are established around the Naturalist, Forester, and Geologist pins. The Naturalist and Forester sessions include a walk along the Nature Trail, and the Geologist session includes fun with rocks around Camp P.M.I. - Trading Post - If you feel you need more time in the Trading Post please feel free to schedule a time for it. - Service Projects - A 1-hour service project is required for the Diamond “W” Award and another ½-hour project for the Camp P.M.I. Adventure Award. Please consult your Commissioner about the project. - Den Time - Den time means taking time out from the Camp P.M.I. program to create your own program. This can be a great time for the Camp P.M.I. Scavenger Hunt, Horseshoes, Volleyball, Bouldering Wall, Geocaching, free play in the open or parade fields, or fishing. This might also be a good time for rest and relaxation. Those wishing to participate in this program should plan to participate all wee,k. This year’s SYP is themed after the hero’s journey. Programs offered to second year campers include: - Advanced Instruction at first-year areas – Your scouts will have the opportunity to visit BBs, Archery, Scoutcraft, Nature and Handicraft to experience a brand new program with all the same fun and excitement. They will perform their swim checks on the first day, and have the opportunity to swim/boat later in the week. - Assaulting the Villain’s Lair – Scouts will defend/attack the super villain’s hideout in this show of courage, strategy, and physical prowess! For more details on the Second Year Program, please feel free to ask me. SYP Activity Description Repairman (Located at Pedal Car Track) Scouts will check tire pressure, pump flat tires, use a ratchet & grease a chain… then ride the cars they repair! Handyman (Located at the Quartermaster) Scouts will hammer nails, screw screws, install light bulbs, and improve the tent platforms. Stagecraft (Located at the Lee Jackson Kyle Campfire Area… above the Dining Hall and across the Beltway) Scouts will learn staging, projection and timing. Hero’s Journey (Start at the Parade Field) The Heroic Quest will pit Webelos against three villainous henchmen in a quest to find the secret symbols and save the day! Their quest will take them all over camp. Campfire (Meet at the Pit) Webelos 2s are invited to a special campfire with stories, cheers, and snacks. Tents are available to stay the night, and Webelos planning to attend can set these up at the start of The Quest on Wednesday or during Siesta. Scouts will be led by volunteer staff from the Pit to Site 1. They will be brought to campsites in the morning before flags. F.A.Q. Q: How long are the hikes? A: See the hiking section above in the program letter. Hikes are planned to last no more than three hours at a steady Webelosappropriate pace. Time is factored in for rest, scenic enjoyment and play. Q: A: How do I schedule program for later in the week? Fill out the program request sheet (located in this packet) and follow the guidelines stated above. Q: A: Can I send a scout who is not a second-year Goshen camper to the Second Year Program? Each situation will be dealt with fairly and individually. My priority is the scout’s enjoyment. Q: A: Where do I pick up trail lunches for hikes? Trail lunches can be picked up at the loading dock of the dining hall right after breakfast. Q: A: Can I get ice from the dining hall? No, but ice is for sale at Memorial Trading Post a four minute drive down the beltway. Q: Do my scouts have to stay in the Second Year Program the whole week? A: No, but we do ask that if they plan to attend program sessions later in the week that they attend the full first two days, and discuss their presence/non-presence with the SYP director. Q: A: Where and when can we do the PMI scavenger hunt? PMI scavenger hunts are self-guided. The forms are included in this leader’s packet, and can be turned into the Clerk’s Office. Q: A: What is the proper attire for morning flag ceremonies? Class B uniform (scouting shirt, proper footwear). Q: A: How can I get internet access? Wi-fi is available in the Administration building (closes at 10:30). Q: Why are things not as they were written online? A: We have been adapting and modifying our plans in response to scout/leader feedback, and the limitations of our staff/supplies. Please refer to this information when reviewing your week as information has changed many times since the website was last updated. Q: What requirements/advancement bullets does _____ activity cover? (aka: how many badges can my kid get for coming to camp?) A: Most activities are labeled “Pin” or “Badge”. Badges we definitely cover include: Aquanaut, Geologist, Naturalist, Forester. The BBs and Archery belt loop requirements are met on the first day. The BBs and Archery Pins might be earned if you sign up for the pin lesson. The Second Year Program accomplishes many of the requirements for Outdoorsman, Handyman and Craftsman badges, but does not complete any of them. The Program Director is familiar with most of the requirements covered; for specific questions, you may ask him. A NOTE ABOUT ACHIEVEMENTS: Cub Scout programs do not emphasize achievements. Camp P.M.I. follows in this example. Our goal is FUN! Fun has a bad reputation with adults, because it is seen as frivolous or else less important when stacked next to “take-away” things like pins and badges. In our experience as one of the best Webelos programs on the East Coast, this mentality that “just having fun is not enough” is destructive to the growth of Scouting. As your boys grow and mature into young men, their programs will emphasize the greater community of scouting, scouting principles, citizenship, morality, “pure” education, hard work, and service. But before they can reach that point, boys need to want to be a part of such an organization. This motivation does not come from without (pins, awards, ego-boosts) but from within. Having fun camping, being with friends, exercising in play, learning empowering camp skills are all inherently motivating—the program we provide here may not earn many badges and pins, but it will make the boys fall in love with camping and scouting, which will make them high-achievers as they grow. Remember that the number one complaint from boys who quit scouting is that it “isn’t fun anymore.” If they have fun now, they’ll work hard later, and achieve much in the end. Aquatics Remains closed for 15 minutes after last thunderclap (45 minutes after last lightning). If the director predicts that aquatics will be closed for more than 1 hour, staff will accompany campers to Dining Hall for games. Pedal Cars If director determines that course or car brakes are wet enough that safety is a concern, the course closes. In this case staff will accompany campers to Dining Hall for games. Field Sports (Rifle Range and Archery) Remains open, but both ranges cease firing. Campers stay under shelters for safety instruction, and to complete worksheets. This is because Camp P.M.I.’s cooks prepare the foil dinner packages early Tuesday afternoon and are not in the kitchen Tuesday evening. All packs are encouraged to gather dry firewood early in the week, and store it under a tarp (under the picnic table works well) or in a vacant tent. Cancellation of evening programs such as field games, open program, round robin, second year, or campfire, will be announced at dinner. * All programs will continue normal operations in light rain (drizzle or mist). When precipitation becomes heavier, the area director will implement rain plans. In the event of a downpour (aka boomer or T-storm), all campers are dismissed to campsites to secure gear and ensure tents stay up. The staff will be hiding only in the areas that are marked on the map (not in program areas, camper sites, or buildings). They’ll be able to see a trail from where they are hiding. When you spot a staff member, let them know and get their signature. Stay with your pack. Begin hunting at 7pm and finish at 8pm. At 8pm bring your signatures to the office in the Admin. (make sure that your pack number is on you paper). No running! The Staff will not sign your paper if they see you running. There are more than 26 staffers, so use the back if you run out of room.
