METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING is a broad field that deals with all sorts of metalrelated areas. The three main branches of this major are physical metallurgy, extractive
metallurgy, and mineral processing. Physical metallurgy deals with problem solving:
you’ll develop the sorts of metallic alloys needed for different types of manufacturing
and construction. Extractive metallurgy involves extracting metal from ore. Mineral
processing involves gathering mineral products from the earth’s crust.
CIVIL ENGINEERING is the broadest of the engineering fields. Civil engineering focuses
on the infrastructure of the world which include Water works, Sewers, Dams, Power
Plants, Transmission Towers/Lines, Railroads, Highways, Bridges, Tunnels, Irrigation
Canals, River Navigation, Shipping Canals, Traffic Control, Mass Transit, Airport
Runways, Terminals, Industrial Plant Buildings, Skyscrapers, etc. Among the important
subdivisions of the field are construction engineering, irrigation engineering,
transportation engineering, soils and foundation engineering, geodetic engineering,
hydraulic engineering, and coastal and ocean engineering.
Civil engineers build the world’s infrastructure. In doing so, they quietly shape the history
of nations around the world. Most people can not imagine life without the many
contributions of civil engineers to the public’s health, safety and standard of living. Only
by exploring civil engineering’s influence in shaping the world we know today, can we
creatively envision the progress of our tomorrows.

GIET, Gunupur – the symbol of quality education in Eastern
India is sensitive to the growing trends of globalization of higher
education. International interaction of GIET is not new. Way
back in 2004, GIET was one of the first institutions in the
State to attract foreign students. In subsequent years, their
numbers grew steadily. At present student body of GIET has
representation from over six countries, including Nepal, Bhutan,
Vietnam, Sudan, Saudi Arab and Qatar proving that its
reputation as a quality institution transcends boarders.
GIET, Gunupur values the diversity that international students
bring to campus in terms of culture, background and
perspectives. A decade long exposure to international
environment has led to the creation of infrastructure and support
systems which are the most appropriate to welcome foreign
students. GIET has a proactive International Admission Cell,
which provides guidance to international students right from
their arrival in the institute in the matters of their cultural, legal
and academic needs and other issues of relevance. Keeping
in view the communication needs of the prospective students
from Vietnam, Sudan, Saudi Arab and Qatar, GIET has
established a language lab to improve the communication skills
in English.

It is widely realized that
scientific research and
education can not be
separated in the institutions for
all round development of the
students. Today, India has
universities that teach science
at Undergraduate and
Postgraduate levels and
separate national laboratories
that carry out research at
Doctoral and Post doctoral
levels, with no interaction
between the two. Such a
demarcation has twin negative
impacts. It kept students away
from the best scientists and it
kept the scientists away from
the best students (hence the
best ideas).
Gandhi Institute of
Engineering & Technology
realized this early and
started
its
research
programs in order to meet
today’s challenges of the
industries. The institute has
introduced a large number
of research projects in some
of the areas of science and
technology. The projects
may be classified as follows:
46
i. Fundamental research leading to doctoral degrees for the faculty
members.
ii. Applied research pursued by the teachers and the students to
develop suitable technologies for the industries.
iii. In the arena of the science for society, the institute has
undertaken societal – mission oriented projects.
A large number of need-based innovative projects are being
pursued and novel industry-institute interactive research
programmes have started with NALCO and B.S. Industries
Bhubaneswar. A few more industries from the state and outside
the state have confirmed their participation in R & D with Gandhi
Institute of Engineering & Technology.
In order to carry out high quality research, GIET is set to enrich
its state-of-the-art laboratories under Modernization programs
with financial assistance from AICTE. The grants from AICTE
are being utilized for creation of simulation and VLSI design
laboratories. Further, the students of GIET will shortly enjoy the
e-learning facility in the campus with financial support already
received from AICTE.
Societal - mission oriented projects need special mention. GIET
with its commitment to serve the society, has taken up several
research projects to extend wholehearted support to alleviate
suffering of the rural and tribal people of the state.
Gandhi Institute of Engineering & Technology is
conducting R & D to mitigate the environmental pollution arising
due to fluoride emissions from the industries.
The ‘i2i Centre for Excellence’, affectionately called the ‘i2i Cell’ enable our institute to see
eye to eye with the industry to prepare industry-ready students with the right blend of
academic and personal skills. The Management keeps a very close tab on the activities of
the Cell and provides regular guidance and advice.
The success of its placement wing lies in getting job in top-notch companies in India and
abroad-NASA, Boeing, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Tech. Mahindra, Capgemini, Honeywell,
Hindustan Motors, HCL, JK Paper Mills, Vedanta Aluminium,Grasim, Samsung, Birla
Copper to name but a few.
The students pass through a very well spread out, structured and intensive training during
their tenure here. The training starts from the 5th Semester in areas like soft skill development,
aptitude and technical skill development. In parallel, selected students are provided with
lateral skills in areas like Oracle and English Communication under the banners of Oracle
University, USA and Cambridge University, UK.
The Cell has been discharging three fold responsibilities, namely, Training, Placement
and Association with the Alumni over the years rather well as the data on these aspects
depict below. To elucidate, the Cell arranges 50,000+ student-hours of Training a year,
succeeds in arranging placement of 90+% of the students. The Cell has the privilege of
conducting Workshops on Entrepreneurship Development, Quality etc. and it has obtained
the Corporate Membership for the prestigious Indian Institute of Welding.
The Cell diversifies into providing training and exposes students to experts from industries
as well as academicians of repute. Lately such luminaries like Infosys, IBM and WIPRO
have accorded certification to GIET to conduct programs like Infosys Campus Connect,
Mission 10X, Aspiration etc. IBM has declared GIET as a “Centre of Excellence”, which is
indeed a rare distinction.
The centre is managed by dedicated and hard working professionals.
