Celebrating 40 years of presenting live folk music in Victoria
February 1 ~ Jake Galbraith: Great Canadian Songs
A 40th-Anniversary Series Concert
Do you remember how it felt the
first time you heard a great song by
Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Ian
and Sylvia, Stan Rogers, or Valdy? The
quintessentially Canadian vibe that our
finest songwriters set in motion has
propelled the folk movement to where we
are today, with a forty-year-old VFMS and
dozens of compelling singer-songwriters
populating our stages. Tonight, Jake
Galbraith performs a selection of great
songs, both new and old, by Canadian
artists. Come prepared to sing along.
Jake has been a singer and multiinstrumentalist for over fifty years. He was
active in the VFMS off and on from the
mid-1970s to the mid-2000s, serving as
the society’s feature booker for a number of years. He currently lives on Gabriola
Island.
February 8 ~ Crikey Mor
United by a shared love of traditional
Irish folk music, Crikey Mor started out as
a group of musicians jamming together
each week at a local pub. The session
caught the attention of music lovers who
wanted more, so some of the group’s core
members decided to form a band. Today,
Crikey Mor consists of Nancy Grossert on
fiddle, Tasia MacKay on flute, Eric Reiswig
on uilleann pipes, Jeremy Walsh on guitar,
Andrew Morris on bodhran, and all five
on vocals.
The group has played at venues up
and down Vancouver Island and beyond,
in settings as urban as Vancouver and
as remote as the little fishing village of
Sointula on Malcolm Island, population
576. Crikey Mor has performed at the
Victoria Highland Games, Folkwest, and
the Read Island Beach Fest, as well as at
Celtic Fest Vancouver in celebration of St.
Patrick’s Day, 2014.
February 15 ~ Chris Ronald with John Ellis
Chris Ronald’s “keenly luxuriant voice
and immaculate songcraft” (The Georgia
Straight) have gained him a passionately
loyal following around the world. In live
performance, Chris draws on his talents
as a storyteller and musician—guitar,
harmonica, ukulele—to deliver a show
that can be enjoyed by all ages. His third
album, Timeline, was released in March
2014 and produced by award-winning
multi-instrumentalist John Ellis. Chris and
John now perform regularly as a duo.
Chris emigrated from England to
Canada in 2002, and his music has been
described as a meeting of British roots
and North American folk. In addition to
touring nationally and internationally, he
remains actively involved in the Lower
Mainland music scene, where he plays
a variety of venues, organizes and hosts
community music events, and teaches
songwriting in schools.
February 22 ~ The Hokum Steamers
Made up of Mike Ballantyne (on
vocals and guitar) and Rick Van Krugel
(on vocals, mandolin, and a variety of
other instruments), the Hokum Steamers
specialize in authentic renditions of early
acoustic blues, especially blues in the
good-time, hokum, and ragtime styles.
This is music from the 1920s and 1930s, by
the likes of Ma Rainey, Luke Jordan, Lillie
Mae, Bo Carter, and Jelly Roll Morton.
Born in England in 1943, Mike grew up
amid a multitude of songs, ranging from
traditional English ballads to recordings
of the Weavers, Josh White, and Brownie
McGhee. Having moved to Canada in
1973, he is a co-founder of the Islands
Folk Festival and the Cowichan Folk Guild.
Rick is an entirely self-taught, play-byear performer. Early jazz and blues, jug
band, a little hokum, and rural blues are
at his musical core. He is also a published
illustrator with several books to his credit.
