September 5 - Scottish Society of Knoxville

Greetings to the Membership
September 2014
Volume XXVI, No.5
Dear Members and Friends:
The Burns Celebration held on July 26 at
Crowne Plaza was a great success. We
had 102 guests who were treated to great
food and friendship. There was great
musical entertainment by the Thistledown
Tinkers and spirited dance by Aimee
MacIssac. Charley Moffatt did an inspired
Ode to the Haggis and John and Debra
Teague authored fantastic Toasts to the
Lassies and Laddies respectively. Gene
Ellison gave a memorable Immortal Memory
address this year.
Our Treasurer, Bob Davis, was the recipient
of the coveted SSK Reivers Trophy for his
distinguished service to our Society, a richly
deserved honor. Immediate Past President,
Brenda Pritchard was awarded a plaque for
her past service as President of the Society.
I believe a good time was had by all.
Thanks for all of you who attended.
Hope to see all of you on Jan 31, 2015.
Yours aye,
SSK Board of Directors

The AGM will be held at Erin Presbyterian
Church on Saturday, November 8. We will
have a potluck dinner and then we will have
an "open" board meeting. This will give
members an idea as to how the Board
arrives at decisions and people will be able
to give "input" on our Schedule of Events for
2015. We will also vote on new officers and
Board members for 2015. Hope many of
you can attend. New ideas are always
welcomed.

with other SSK members as we dispense
information on family history, tartans, and
Scottish geography.
Setup time will be 7am - 8:30 as cars must
be off the street by 8:30. We would
appreciate members to staff the tent for 1-2

Contact Linda to schedule a time to help out
if you are so inclined. [email protected]

Burns Supper Celebration
Tim gave you a good summary of our event
in his message. Just wanted to tell you that
the Tinkers sent us a note, telling us how
much they enjoyed performing for us.
They felt the SSK audience was very
friendly and welcoming. They liked our
response to their music .
Found on Facebook!
Thistledown Tinkers had a great time in Knoxville
last night. The Scottish Society of Knoxville puts
on a fine Burns Supper! It's a privilege to be
appreciated as musicians, and those folks sure
made us feel that way. Knoxville is a beautiful
town, too. Special thanks to Timothy Richards for
booking us! Trip Rogers July 27 at 5:16pm ·
Picnic
Our August picnic was a success, in the
midst of roving thunderstorms. We had
about 38 people attend and enjoyed visiting
and munching. Pictures of our youngest
members are at the end of this newsletter.
Several members told about driving through
rain to arrive at the pavilion. We thank you
for that effort and are glad everyone made
it. The rain held off at the picnic area until
about 3:30 and encourage us to pack up the
food, watch the water pour into the lower
area and wait out the rain.
Who made the Banana Pudding?
It was delicious, if you want your pan & carrier
returned, please contact Tim or Linda.

Clan Spotlight
Armstrong
Reviers Award Submittals
SSK gives an award each year, at our
Burns Supper, to a member who has been
active in SSK for many years, volunteering
in several positions and assisting the
society in many ways. This award is called
the Reivers and is given to a member who
has been of value to SSK.
If you would like to submit someone's name
for this honor, please write a letter of less
than 300 words outlining their qualifications
and send it to [email protected]. The
submittal is due by the AGM on Nov. 8th.
It will be reviewed by the Nominating
Committee and the Board. We do
appreciate your help with this effort.
Flowers of the Forest
Pam Rowe of the Armstrong Clan passed
away August 9th. Pam was the sister of
SSK's Past President, Charles Wareing.
Deepest sympathies to Charles and the
Rowe Family.
We miss you Pam.
There is a traditional story that the originator
of the Armstrong (s) was Fairbairn, and
armour bearer of the King of Scotland who
went to the King's assistance when his
horse was killed underneath him during
battle. Fairbairn set the King upon his own
horse. For this, he was awarded the
ancestral lands along the English border
and was given the name, Armstrong. The
name is first found on rolls in 1376.
The family's land was located along the
border in Liddesdale, where due to their
sheer numbers, their power was
unquestioned. It is said that they could
muster as many as 3000 warriors and their
behavior kept the borders in turmoil for
years.
The Armstrong (s) of Gilnockie were the
principal branch of the Clan.

Recipe
Cranachan
2-3 Tbs pinhead oatmeal
1/2 pint double cream
Clear Scottish honey
Whisky, to taste
100g tub thick yoghurt
12 oz raspberries or brambles
Toast the oatmeal, set aside to cool.
Light, whip the cream with a spoon or so of
honey and a good splash of whiskey, until
floppy and gently fold in the yoghurt and
finally most of the oatmeal.
Loving, loyal and affectionate with its family,
this breed needs people. Socialize it well
starting at puppyhood. It is a good guard
and watchdog. Sensitive to the tone of your
voice, these dogs will not listen if they sense
you do not mean what you say, and will also
not listen if you are too harsh. They need
their owners to be calm, but firm.
These dogs are very intelligent and train
well, and many have starred in films. The
mascot of Texas A&M, Reveille, has been a
Sheltie.
Legend
The Loch Ness Monster (‘Nessie’)
Fold in half the berries then pile into four
glasses and decorate with remaining
berries, a drizzle of honey and a scattering
of oatmeal on the top.
One of Scotland’s most famous unsolved
mysteries is that of the Loch Ness Monster
(or ‘Nessie’ as it has affectionately come to
be known).
Serves 4, a wee bit of shortbread goes well.
Dog Breed
Shetland Sheepdog
The Shetland Sheepdog, often known as
the Sheltie, is a breed of herding dog. They
are small to medium dogs, and come in a
variety of colors, such as sable, tri-color,
and blue merle. They are vocal, excitable,
energetic dogs who are always willing to
please and work hard. They are partly
derived from dogs used in the Shetland
Isles for herding and protecting sheep. The
breed was formally recognized by The
Kennel Club in 1909.
SSK Tartan Times -Sunday, August 31, 2014
The large dinosaur-like creature is reputed
to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish
Highlands. The first recorded sighting of the
monster was nearly 1,500 years ago when a
giant beast is said to have leaped out of a
lake near Inverness and ate a local farmer.
Since then the myth of the Loch Ness
Monster has magnified.
In 1934, a London doctor snapped a
photograph that seemed to show a
dinosaur-looking creature with a long neck
emerging from the water. Dozens of
sightings have since been claimed, many of
which have turned out to be hoaxes. In
2009, a newspaper reader claims to have
spotted ‘Nessie’ whilst browsing Google
Earth’s satellite photos of Loch Ness.
Regardless of the truth, the suggestion of
the monster's existence makes Loch Ness
one of Scotland's most popular tourist
attractions with thousands visiting it shores
each year with the hope of catching a rare
glimpse of the famous monster.
