How did your book come to life?
I’ve always been fascinated with Greek mythology and came across a documentary
series about the historical basis of many of the characters in Greek legends. One of
the episodes was on Hercules’s Twelve Labors and I thought, “How would that play
out if this was set in modern times?”
I played around with the story trying to force it into a modern setting, but couldn’t get
it to fit. About fifty pages into that draft, I realized it just wasn’t working, but didn’t want
to give up on the idea. After thinking it over, I considered how the story could work if I
set it in a post-apocalyptic future society that has adopted Greek – and some Roman
– ways of life. And what if the gods were real players in this world?
The idea took hold quickly. The outline for it flowed out in less than a couple hours
and I had a rough draft in about six weeks. As I began working on subsequent drafts,
I began to see how the concept of Osteria could work into a series that covers many
other Greek legends. I sketched out a rough outline and suddenly my single-book
idea turned into a six-book series.

How does history fit in with this story if it is set in the future?
The world of Osteria is heavily based on my studies of the Roman world combined
with aspects of Greek culture. Clothing and architecture has been lifted from my
readings of the Greco-Roman culture, the order of religious woman who serve Hera
are very similar to the Roman Vestal Virgins, and the structure of the police force and
the ruler’s personal guard reflect the Roman vigiles and Praetorian Guard.
As far as the future aspect, this isn’t a technologically advanced future. No space
ships. The world, our world, has essentially killed itself off. This was followed by a
complete societal collapse including the loss of technology. The world of Osteria has
slowly built itself up from the ruins of what we left, and only recently have they been
uncovering parts of our world, giving them things such as electricity. But the
discoveries have been limited to a very few people, so for the most part, it’s
technologically similar to a Greco-Roman world.

So why not just set it in ancient times?
I needed the technology to make some scenes in The Voyage work. That sounds like
a cop out, but there is an immediacy required and having messengers running
information back and forth just wouldn’t produce the same effect. The technology is
subtle, and many Osterians are rightfully wary of it. Overall, despite relying aspects of
the story and setting on solid research, I wanted to be able to create my own world
with my own rules without committing the sin of being historically inaccurate.

Who is you favorite character in your book and why?
Of the mortals, I would have to say Odysseus. He has a way of diffusing any tense
situation, he’s a natural leader but has no interest in taking the spotlight from his
cousin, Jason.. There’s a wry humor, brashness, and cleverness about Odysseus that
I love. As for the gods, Hermes is my favorite. I love his vanity, I love his cattiness, I
love his wit. Every scene with him is great fun to write.

How did you name your characters?
Most characters are taken straight out of the legends. Sometimes a couple legendary
characters combine into one or take on a slightly different role just to rein in the cast a
bit, but for the most part you’ll find every name in The Voyage, in the legends. For
those characters not in the legends, I have a very handy book with a list of Greek
names for them.

If you based the book on legends, isn’t the book predictable?
I hope not. Of course, I do hope people who aren’t familiar with the legends pick up
the book – for them everything will be a new twist. For those familiar with the myths,
the underlying subplots and the character development will add a new dimension and
depth to the story. Although most of Jason’s adventures do end up with the same
result, I have changed some aspects of his story to bring new life to the myth and to
increase the pace and tension. So far, readers have not found The Voyage
predictable in any way.

Will people be angry about the changes you’ve made to this popular myth?
No one has complained yet. The changes do fit in well and most are minor. I think for
readers who know the legends, The Voyage will be a pleasant surprise by being
familiar, yet new. Although wonderful stories, too many Greek myths feel very flat and
two-dimensional. My goal in The Osteria Chronicles is to bring the myths to life, to
bring the settings to life, and to make the situations and characters seem real and
dynamic.

Why do you think your readers are going to enjoy your book?
I don’t want to say The Voyage has something for everyone, but there is a good mix
of history, fantasy, a touch of romance, plenty of adventure, and even a bit of humor.
Overall, people will enjoy losing themselves in the struggles of self-doubt, loyalty,
trust, revenge, love and the need for admiration that have made the myths such a
permanent part of our culture.

Did any writers inspire you while writing the book?
I’m horrible at creating settings and slowing down the pace – I just want to get the
story out so much, my first drafts end up very thin. While writing The Voyage I
listened to the Song of Fire and Ice series by George RR Martin. Examining how he
brings settings to life, how he develops pace, and how he makes his characters both
lovable and despicable at the same time was a true inspiration when working on the
subsequent drafts of the book.

What is your favorite scene in the book?
There’s a scene where Hermes and Zeus fall into a big argument. Hera, not knowing
that Hermes has recently betrayed her, defends Hermes. There’s some amazing
tension in the scene not only with the arguing, but with Hermes’s guilt over what he’s
done to Hera.

Do you have another project in the works? If so, what is it?
Yes. The Voyage is the first in a series called The Osteria Chronicles, each of which
will involve various Greek legends as the world of Osteria faces some serious

challenges from mortals, gods and titans. I’m currently drafting the third book in the
series. The working title is The Maze and is based partially on the myth of the
Minotaur. I expect it to be out in 2016.
