Since 1900, generations of the Brawand family have been
looking after guests' day-to-day well-being in Grindelwald.
The baton remains with the fourth generation, inspired by the
same healthy pioneering spirit as the founders.

After a rainy summer all over Central Europe, autumn has brought
us some very welcome late sunshine. The time has already come
for our regular review, together with a look ahead at some future
highlights. Our summer season got off to a good start once again
with the latest «Tatort Jungfrau» murder mystery weekend. Not
forgetting the «Eiger Ultra Trail», which has already become an
essential fixture on the summer calendar!
Unfortunately, the frequent rainy weather meant that we didn't
manage to make full use of our new patio furniture – but we're
hoping to make up for that next summer. The many regular Kirchbühl guests are familiar
with our changeable mountain summers and, like us, their spirits are never dampened.
While the weather is dry, snow-making equipment is already being set up and connected
to allow snow production to begin as soon as temperatures are low enough. We are then
looking forward to the full start-up of the new winter sports season in our ski areas in
the middle of December.
This newsletter once again brings you all the latest news and experiences from the
Eiger Collection establishments. As well as information about some very attractive
holiday deals.
We and all the team look forward to welcoming you to Kirchbühl.

RENOVATIONS IN AUTUMN 2014
Once again, we are taking advantage of
the low season period to focus on some
renovations and improvements. We are
working on the following projects: The «La
Marmite» gourmet restaurant is being
given a complete new look. Including new
windows, with new flooring, chairs, lighting
and «sandblasting» of wooden features set
to follow.
Some walls are being given a copper finish,
representing the link to the kitchen. An old
stove will act as a talking point for guests
and will be used as a display area for spirits
and liqueurs.
Special congratulations to Anja Kaufman
whose excellent mark of 5.4 earned
her second place in the rankings!
We wish them all lots of happiness and
every success for the future. We were able to
celebrate these achievements in fitting style
at the various graduation ceremonies. It was
interesting to hear all about these young
professionals' impressions of their time with
us. There were always a few amusing stories
to recount.
We are proud to be a training provider.
Switzerland's unique training system, with
its emphasis on entry-level professional
training, is helping to ensure good future
prospects for our young people in the labour
market. A model that could be worth copying
in many European countries to help tackle
youth unemployment!
We are also upgrading the locking system
for the room doors. New contactless cards
will provide a convenient and modern access
solution for the hotel's rooms. Security is
also being increased.
The refrigeration systems used for the
kitchen and service stations are coming to
the end of their useful life and the time has
come for an upgrade. A new cooling agent
will provide a more energy-efficient cooling
system. Some of the heat generated during
the cooling process will be reclaimed to
produce hot water.
Back in the summer, we replaced all the TVs
in the rooms with new flat screen SAMSUNG
televisions. The internal hotel system was
also upgraded to receive a wider range of
digital channels, including several foreignlanguage channels. Channel 1 features our
360-degree live webcam. Channel 2 allows
us to stream films directly from DVDs over
the hotel network.
Together with Hotel Kirchbühl, the apartments in the surrounding chalets create a
small, family-oriented «holiday resort».
We offer rooms in a sunny and peaceful setting, catering to a wide variety of needs. They
are located just 10 minutes from the centre of
the village and enjoy an amazing panoramic
view. Our selection includes something to
suit almost every taste. The apartments tend
to have more space in comparison with the
hotel rooms. A short walk takes you to the
hotel for breakfast or your evening meal.
We will be happy to advise you and help you
find your ideal accommodation: from a more
basic 1-room studio through to the luxury of
a 4.5 room apartment.
Children can let off some steam and play to
their hearts' content in the snow around the
chalets. After all, building a snowman or a
castle with dad is an important part of a winter holiday. Tired after a day in the fresh, cool
mountain air, you can then look forward to a
good night's sleep.

Situated in the heart of Europe, our region
has an excellent transport infrastructure.
For the last year, a direct TGV high-speed

Lauberhorn toboggan circuit
If you're looking for ideas for a day of rest
from skiing, I can recommend this tour which
is also a great day out for children. Take the
Wengernalpbahn rack railway from Grindelwald to the Kleine Scheidegg. This takes
you to the start of a toboggan run over the
Wengernalp, past the famous Hundschopf
jump on the Lauberhorn World Cup ski run,
towards Wengen. This 5.5 kilometre toboggan route is called the Fox Run. It includes
fast-paced sections alternating with some
flatter areas through woodland.
There is also a chance to stop off at the Allmend restaurant. By toboggan, it's a fairly
short trip to the village of Wengen. After that,
you take the cable car up to the Männlichen.
From this vantage point, you can admire the
entire Grindelwald valley at your feet. Warm
up with a quick Glühwein in the traditional
Spycherbar before following the toboggan
run from Männlichen down over 1,000 metres towards Grindelwald and the Holenstein
middle station. If there is enough snow, you
can even toboggan all the way to the Grindelwald Grund valley station.
This lively toboggan run with bends, steep
parts and gliding sections offers tobogganing
challenges and a whole lot of fun. Along Itramenstrasse, the run crosses the ski pistes
in several places, so particular caution is required.
At the end of the day, you can look back on
your many kilometres of tobogganing as you
happily make your way back to Hotel Kirchbühl. Depending on their age, children can
either go along with you on your toboggan or
travel on their own. Something to drink and a
bar of chocolate in your backpack often provide a real motivation boost along the way.

GRINDELWALD / JUNGFRAU REGION
DORMITORIES REPLACED BY A NEW «SUPERIOR ROOM»
Planned for some time, the conversion of the dormitories on the top floor will be carried out in
time for the winter season. Water damage has compelled us to bring the project forward and
complete work as quickly as possible. Since the renovation of the other rooms, the two 10-bed
dormitories no long fit with our hotel concept. Bookings for the dormitories have been falling
year on year, alongside increasing demand for en-suite family rooms. In response to these
changes, we have decided to create a great double/four-bed room on the top floor. Guests will
be able to enjoy an impressive view over the north face of the Wetterhorn and the majestic
Schreckhorn from two full-length windows. It will also have a private bathroom with a shower
and toilet in the «Bort design». Bunk beds, which can also be used as sofas, will be available
for children. In this peaceful setting, the only sounds to be heard will be cowbells in summer
and snow falling on the roof in winter.
OPENING OF EIGER+
Eiger+, a purpose-built shopping and service centre including an integrated car park, public
squares and parkland with a play area, is preparing to open in December 2014.
After almost two years of intensive construction work, we are of course eager to hear our
guests' impressions of the village's new centre.
However, final judgement is best reserved until next autumn, to give all the plants and trees
time to grow.
As well as the big COOP shopping centre, the modern building will also house a Vitality chemist
and a branch of the Berner Kantonalbank. It has not yet been decided which businesses will
occupy the other two retail outlets and the existing COOP premises.
The room can be booked on our website - at a guaranteed attractive rate!
NEW HEAD CHEF
Carsten Nikles has been the sous-chef at Berghaus Bort for the last year. With effect from this
winter season, he will be taking over the role of head chef. Before joining the Berghaus Bort
team, Mr Nikles was head chef at the Restaurant Des Alpes in Interlaken from 2009 until 2013.
He previously worked for the Brawand family as a sous-chef in Hotel Kirchbühl back in 2009.
We are looking forward to some creative new ideas from this young member of staff who is
enthusiastically flying the flag for our high quality concept.
We would like to thank Jonas Messer, our head chef for the last three years, for his excellent
work. We wish Jonas every success for the future.
I'M PRECIOUS, GET ME OUT OF HERE
This season will see the third edition of this successful end-of-season event on the First.
Overnight, thirty wooden treasure chests will be buried under the snow in a field measuring
around 80 x 30 metres. Equipped with a shovel, participants then need to work out their own
strategy to explore the field.
Register online at www.jungfrau.ch for a chance to win some great prizes, including a voucher
for a stay in Berghaus Bort.
HALFPIPE IN THE WHITE-ELEMENTS.CH SNOWPARK ON GRINDELWALD FIRST
In addition to last year's features in the White-elements.ch snowpark in the First ski area, a new
halfpipe is being created this autumn. It is being modelled around an indentation created in the
terrain, which will assist greatly with the artificial snow cover.
The Jungfraubahnen railways are delighted to provide this additional attraction, sure to appeal in
particular to young freestyle winter sports enthusiasts. It is the only halfpipe in the entire Bernese
Oberland!
HOLIDAYCHECK COMPETITION
If you'd like to take part in the next competition, all you have to do is rate us on HolidayCheck

TWO NEW SKI LIFTS IN THE SCHILTHORN AREA
The Schilthornbahnen company in Mürren is continuing to invest. Following the summer opening
of the play area on the Allmendhubel and the viewing platform on Birg, this autumn it is now
working to replace the existing two Allmihubel and Gimmelen ski lifts. «A ski area without a drag
lift is not a ski area!», says hotelier and ski instructor Christian Brawand. So you can happily
enjoy a day's skiing on the Schilthorn Piz Gloria.
A new freestyle snowpark is also being created beside the Gimmeln lift. Broadening of the piste
traverse on Birg to Engetal will also help to increase safety and provide safe access to the new
Bond piste.
You can see all these new attractions for yourself, including a visit to the SKYLINE WALK platform
on Birg or BOND World on Piz Gloria, on one of our weekly guided «Schilthorn Ski Safaris».
