Late last week the river level at Koree Island was 1.57m, which is 300mm above its pre-rainfall levels. As a result, the Wauchope water treatment plant was no longer on back-feed and with continued rainfall there was the potential to start operating one pump at the Koree 2 pump station within the next few days. Rainfalls in the upper catchment have also resulted in increased flows in the Wilson River at Telegraph Point and the Thone River at Comboyne. Because of the rain, council had been delaying making a decision on moving to level 4 but with dam levels now around 70 per cent that meeting would take place later this week. The Hastings moved from level 1 to level 3 water restrictions in midJanuary due to the lack of serious rain in the preceding months (the council does not use level 2). Under level 3 restictions, sprinklers and fixed hoses are banned, micro-sprays are allowed for 15 minutes and one hand-held hose for one hour every second day, on odd or even days matching house number. Under level 4, sprinklers and fixed hoses are banned. Micro sprays are allowed for 15 minutes and one hand-held hose for half an hour every second day. Hoses must be fitted with a water cut-off trigger or control nozzle under both levels. There are two more levels after level 4. Level 5: sprinklers, micro-sprays, fixed and hand-held hoses are banned and gardens can be watered with buckets only. Level 6: all external use of water is banned and gardens can be watered with recycled water only. People who ignore the restrictions can be fined $229. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council staff will be meeting later this week to make a decision on whether to introduce level 4 water restrictions. The region’s water situation is looking more positive because of the recent rain, but the combined storage levels in the Port Macquarie and Cowarra dams have now fallen to 70 per cent, which is the trigger for level 4. Bruce Page, 68, a retired truck driver and Vietnam Veteran, said his accident happened on New Year’s Eve, but months on he was still upset about it and had decided to go public. “I was in shock and injured and they didn’t even ask if I was all right, let alone call me a cab or offer me a lift back to my place,” he said. “I have just been thinking about it over and over again, and I just cannot come to terms with their lack of compassion.” Mr Page was cycling past Miedecke Ford in the cycle lane on Hastings Riv- er Drive in Port Macquarie when a car came out of Miedecke and hit him, sending him and his bicycle crashing to the ground. He was wearing a helmet, but sustained a gash to his forehead and several large contusions on his legs. He and the driver then had an argument over who was at fault, and called police to come and decide. Two youngish male officers attended, and ruled that Mr Page was at fault because he had been cycling in the cycle lane in the opposite direction to the traffic flow. He says he accepted their decision with good grace. However, he was still in shock and pain from the accident and his bike was a write-off, so he asked if they could give him a lift to his house which was only a short drive away. “They refused and could not have cared less about my well-being,” Mr Page said. “I had to walk home and then I went to the doctor to check out my injuries. My doctor was horrified to hear about the way I was treated or not treated by the officers. She said I could have sustained concussion from the smack on my head and my legs looked nasty. “Even if they didn’t want to give me a lift or could not do so because it was against police policy, they could have explained that, and at least offered to call a cab for me because I did not have my mobile with me. “Maybe reading this will make them aware of how their actions seemed from my point of view and they will be a little kinder next time they encounter a similar situation.” Mr Page’s comments were forwarded to the police media unit for a possible response, but no statement had been forthcoming at the time of going to press. To date, she has endured 14 bouts of chemotherapy, which have unfortunately so far been unsuccessful. Maureen is now onto heavier chemo doses which have left her without her thick glossy hair. Despite her personal health situation, Maureen has bravely committed to captain a team for this year’s Hastings Relay For Life. The relay is a fun, overnight event where teams of around 10 people of all ages take turns walking or running around a track within a fun festival atmosphere. It takes place world-wide in 21 different countries, making it the biggest fundraising event for cancer in the world. The 2014 event, to be held on 22 and 23 March, will be Maureen’s second Relay For Life. Her first coincided with her cancer diagnosis. “Having cancer, I felt I wanted to give back what they were giving to me,” Maureen said. “There is still so much they don’t know about cancer, how to treat it and what causes it, so being involved in Relay For Life means we are actually doing something about finding answers”. Maureen’s team Apple Dumplings has busily been arranging a fashion parade, one of their multiple fundraising activities leading up to the event. When asked about the reason for the team name, Maureen explained apples were healthy and that she is “short and dumpy”, hence the name. To date, Maureen’s team has already raised a magnificent $1100 through raffles, prizes for which having been donated by friends and family. In fact Maureen’s sister won a barbecue which she has donated back to be raffled at a future date. Last year more than 1000 local Hastings residents were involved in Hastings Relay For Life and over $125,000 was raised. This year, organisers are hoping to involve even more people and raise $130,000. Every four to six weeks from March to October this fun group gets together for a session of rugby, laughter and socialising, playing against similar teams from other areas, either at their home ground of Stuart Park in Port Macquarie or an away destination. “The rugby is optional, but the socialising and partying isn’t,” joked member Michael Reed. “It’s really all about having fun and the social side. You don’t even have to play if you don’t want to or cannot, but you’re still welcome to come along and watch and have a drink. “Women are also most welcome and we have some female players in the league as well as social members.” Age is also no barrier. Some Vintage Ports players are in their seventies and eighties and one of the other teams they play against has a player in his nineties. “Players wear different-coloured shorts, which mean they can be tackled or not tackled,” Michael said. “The older players wear red, which means they cannot be tackled and have to be treated a little more gently.” In keeping with the fun spirit, winning is irrelevant, although plenty of friendly sledging goes on. “Every game is a draw, regard- Stadium plan is shaping up A NEW project steering group will oversee the Port Macquarie Indoor Stadium expansion project. Establishment of the group formed part of a resolution passed at a Port Macquarie-Hastings Council meeting last week. The steering group - including Cr Justin Levido, senior council staff and the construction manager - will oversee and provide governance to the project. The council’s infrastructure and asset management director Jeffery Sharp said the forum would provide a mechanism that allowed the project to proceed expediently while still keeping council fully informed of progress and fully aware of any risks, concerns, financial matters and legislative/ regulatory requirements. The council was successful in obtaining $5.3 million in State and Federal grants to expand the Port Macquarie indoor stadium, including $2.5 million for the incorporation of PCYC facilities and a further $2.8 million Federal Government grant to provide for two additional indoor multipurpose sports courts. The NSW Minister for Finance and Services Andrew Constance and Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams met with members of the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce and the NSW Business Chamber to discuss the reforms. Mr Constance told Hastings business owners that the reforms had freed up businesses to grow and were providing better support for injured workers to help them return safely to work sooner. Ms Williams said they were delivering a fairer system, with more generous payments being provided to severely injured workers. “It means Port Macquarie employers have benefited from an average premium rate reduction of 11.96 per cent in the past 12 months,” she said. “This reduction will apply to industries such as farming, manufacturing and hospitality spread across metropolitan and regional NSW. “I meet regularly with many employers as well as with the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce and the message I am getting is that there is a return of confidence in the business sector and that the changes to WorkCover are having a positive impact on business. NSW Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson and Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams made the announcement during a visit to Port Macquarie last week. Ms Hodgkinson said the offshore artificial reef would be the third which the NSW Government had built since 2011, joining the successful artificial reef off Sydney and the recently announced artificial reef off Shoalhaven Heads on the South Coast. “The Port Macquarie region is already an incredibly popular fishing destination for recreational fishers and this new offshore artificial reef will only add to that popularity,” Ms Hodgkinson said. “The Port Macquarie, Sydney and Shoalhaven Heads offshore artificial reefs are all funded from the Recreational Fishing Trusts and are a terrific example of how the NSW Government is re-investing money from the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee back into projects which directly benefit the more than one million recreational fishers in NSW. “To date, the Recreational Fishing Trusts have funded more than $130 million worth of projects to improve recreational fishing opportunities in NSW.” Ms Hodgkinson said construction of the artificial reef was expected to take about two years. “Once constructed, the reef will in a very short time develop into a complex reef habitat supporting a diverse fish community, which will attract many iconic fish species including Spanish mackerel, cobia, pear perch and snapper,” she said. Testing times - From left: Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams, Neil Wallace and Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson with the Rip Buoy. Test lets rip with a life saver A MARINE flotation device developed by a local man that could potentially save lives was tested in Port Macquarie last week. The testing of the Rip Buoy, which is a locally engineered invention, was witnessed by Minister for Primary Industry Katrina Hodgkinson, Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams and Rip Buoy Holdings managing director Neil Wallace at Town Beach. A team of researchers will continue independent sea trials of Rip Buoys at Town, Shelley and Flynn beaches. The Rip Buoy is moored in the throat of a permanent rip so that when somebody in need is being swept out to sea they only have to float to the buoy for safety. Swimmers will then be able to activate the onboard alarm system to alert local rescue services. Mr Wallace said the concept of a Rip Buoy began on Australia Day 2010 when he was attending a family barbecue at Shelley Beach and witnessed a drowning. Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams, left, with NSW Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson at the announcement. Inset: An artist’s impression of what the reef could look like. Mrs Williams said the proposed reef expected to be located in water about 30 metres deep within easy access from the entrance to the Hastings River - will boost tourism in the Port Macquarie region. “The Department of Primary Industries will now undertake a detailed environmental assessment and extensive consultation with recreational and commercial fishers and other stakeholders before a final location is selected,” Mrs Williams said. “It is proposed to construct the Port Macquarie offshore fishing reef using multiple concrete purpose-built artificial reef units which will be lowered to the ocean floor to form clusters.” Mrs Williams hoped that some local companies might tender for the project, which will entail submitting a design proposal in addition to actually making the modules for the reef, which are normally made out of concrete. “The drowning occurred when four young men were caught in a permanent rip although we were unaware of the unfolding tragedy until emergency services arrived later at the scene,” Mr Wallace said. “By that time the men had been caught in the rip for some 25 minutes and as a result this claimed the life of one of these young men. “That tragedy caused me a great deal of distress and provided the inspiration for me to draw on my marine engineering background to research for a solution to this problem. “After many hours and numerous ideas the Rip Buoy concept emerged. After the construction and development of a number of prototypes, we now have a fully operational Rip Buoy with 24/7 back-to-base monitoring and data system. “This allows a rapid and efficient response and safety-aid solution to people in distress.” SOLAR SAVES YOU MONEY! Organiser Katrina Shalier said the response from the public had been tremendous, with a steady stream of people making their way upstairs in Port Panthers over the weekend to visit the 30 exhibitors and their stalls, which included many different kinds of alternative therapy, ranging from psychics to numerologists and aura readers. “We have been absolutely overwhelmed at the response and will definitely be back next year in February,” she said. Julie Williams of Wauchope shop More Than Crystals and Books was one of the many happy exhibitors. “The expo was a great opportunity for us to meet so many amazing people and to share our extraordinary range of crystals, jewellery and gifts with them,” she said. “It also allowed people to spend time with and get to know our incred- ibly gifted healers and readers,” she said. “The best part of the weekend for us was the fantastic response we received from customers who were amazed by the range of beautiful things we brought along to the expo and also the people who were stunned and often very emotional from the readings and healings they had received.” Nici Cook of the Salt Cave in Port Macquarie was also happy with the response. “We provided dozens of people with information about the benefits of halotherapy and salt-wellness products like Himalayan salt lamps,” she said. “The weekend was just lovely and it was so nice to have had the opportunity to be able to let people know of our pristine salt cave.” Numerologist Victor Tracey was one of the 50 per cent or so of exhibitors who travelled a long distance to attend, in his case from Launceston in Tasmania. Known as Mr Numbers, Mr Tracey is one of Australia’s best known numerologists and has been reading professionally since the 1960s. He said the numbers of people visiting the expo and interest in numerology had been so good that he would now be staying in Port Macquarie until next Tuesday to continue seeing clients. “It’s been a really good expo,” he said. “I have been doing this for years, and for a first expo this has been fantastic - people seem really interested in readings. I will definitely be back next year.” Council win for striking the right balance Circulation – 19,500* Readership – 31,200* DISTRIBUTION AREA: Delivered FREE to households and businesses throughout Port Macquarie and Hastings area. Draft plans take building to new levels PORT-MACQUARIE-HASTINGS Council will seek feedback on a new planning framework to promote new development in suitable areas close to the Port Macquarie CBD. Liveable Neighbourhoods is a policy document that will guide changes to various planning controls such as the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Environmental Plan and Development Control Plan. It is designed to help achieve the urban consolidation goals set out in the Mid North Coast Regional Strategy 2009, including that 40 per cent of new housing on the Mid North Coast should consist of either apartments or townhouses. In order to encourage development in areas close to the CBD, the framework may result in changes to existing building rules including those governing height, distance from the street and off-street parking. Encouraging new development in areas within or surrounding es- tablished town centres makes better use of existing infrastructure, makes provision of public transport more efficient, makes walking and cycling more appealing and reduces the need to clear bushland or farmland on the fringe of urban areas. The council’s development and environment services director Matt Rogers said the region would need approximately 400 new dwellings every year between now and 2031 to cater for expected growth. 2 DOUBLE PASSES TO GIVEAWAY The Port Macquarie Independent has 2 Double passes to giveaway to Kamahl valued at $80! Mr Pares said it was incredible that a serious incident of this nature resulted in relatively minor injuries to all of the students, and he praised the bravery and initiative shown by the students and staff. “Trapped in the bus, Newman College students attempted to smash open the back window as the passenger doors were blocked, but a tree prevented them,” he said. “The quick-thinking response of Newman passengers Trent Maybury, William Gardiner and Joshua Burtenshaw saw them guide the younger students off the bus via a broken window towards the front of the vehicle and certainly helped to minimise the potential risks to others.” “I am so incredibly proud of our students and their brave reaction to this accident.” He also expressed his gratitude to the staff, emergency services and members of the public who helped in the aftermath. “The Newman College community is very grateful for the work of the emergency services staff, police and community members who stopped and helped on the day,” he said. Newman Senior Technical College principal Stephen Pares said every student who attended Newman was required to complete a senior first-aid course within the first weeks of commencement. “The training was invaluable, with many putting their newly acquired skills into action after the bus crash,” Mr Pares said. More than 30 students from Newman, Westport Public, Westport High and other schools were on the bus when it left the road at speed at Fernbank on Hastings River Drive last Tuesday afternoon, hitting a tree and landing in a ditch. Fortunately, two Newman College staff members were travelling a few cars behind the bus and were on the scene immediately, followed by six more staff members who were able to provide support and comfort to the students. Nine people including the driver were transported to hospital by ambulance, and a further 25 children were taken via bus to hospital for precautionary assessment. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has accepted a tender for the design and environmental assessment for the project of $114,845 from SMEC Australia. The project will involve all preconstruction activities between the Pacific Highway and Ocean Drive with the exception of a section in the middle, which has already been upgraded. The project was identified within the council’s recent Road Network Laser Survey as a high priority for repair or reconstruction. Houston Mitchell Drive provides a link from the Pacific Highway to Lake Cathie and Bonny Hills, which is currently the fastest growth area for residential development within the Port Macquarie local government area. Breakthrough dealing with drought FEDERAL Lyne MP Dr David Gillespie has met with Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce to discuss a broad range of issues associated with the rural sector, including policies aimed at assisting farmers relating to drought. “Barnaby Joyce is very well aware of the challenges throughout the various parts of our rural sector,” Dr Gillespie said. “The lack of good solid rain over the past few months has seen some parts of his own electorate and the adjoining seat of Parkes look something like that of the moon landing. “As I have travelled around our electorate in recent weeks, particularly in the south and around Gloucester, and to the west into the hinterland, it is quite clear that if we don’t get some decent rain soon this is going to have a significant impact on our local farming sector.” Dr Gillespie said the farm hardship, rural and drought assistance measures delivered by both State and Federal governments had been complex in the past and he was keen to see changes in the future. “While fodder transport, emergency water grant and other subsidies are provided at the State level, I am delighted that the Prime Minister and the Agriculture Minister are moving to bring forward the Federal Farm Household Allowance with a number of important changes aimed at improving eligibility for farmers doing it particularly tough,” Dr Gillespie said. Rodney and his father David Marler are the new owners of Hollis Marine, which they have renamed Marler Marine to reflect the change in ownership, which officially happened on 23 December 2013. At Marler Marine, you’ll find the same excellence in marine mechanics that Matt Hollis and Hollis Marine were known for. A marine mechanic with 16 years of experience under his belt, Rodney has worked for Yamaha, owned his own business in Sydney and worked for some time for Mid Coast Marine in Port Macquarie before buying Hollis Marine in partnership with his father David. There’s pretty well nothing he doesn’t know when it comes to engines, and he also has out-going owner Matt Hollis on call as a sub-contractor if he needs a hand, which means a quick turnaround for even the biggest jobs. The sales and administrative side of the business will be handled by David and Rodney’s wife Lauren, who have not worked in the marine industry before but both have extensive experience in business and know all too well the key to running a successful local business. “Great service, competitive prices and that willingness to go the extra yard,” said David with a smile. “I think being a family business is also a real plus, as we are in this together for the long-term.” David, Lauren and Rodney Marler - the new team at Marler Marine. Marler Marine is already sales and service agent for a number of wellknown brands, including Volvo Penta, Tohatsu Outboards, Suzuki Marine and Polycraft hulls, but the trio have some expansion plans in the pipeline. Car business is booming COUNTRY Wholesale Group (CWG) is now even bigger and better, with more cars and services to choose from. Based at 15 Uralla Road, in the industrial area of Port Macquarie, the mega car warehouse has just expanded to incorporate the premises next door - which means they now have even more warehouse and yard space. The larger premises will allow them to increase stock gradually from 40 to 50 vehicles to up to around 100. CWG has also relocated the car detailing section into the new premises, which is enabling them to offer a full car detailing service to the public. Owner Steve Rae started the company four years ago and said business turnover had shown a constant upward trend, with turnover now more than 40 cars a month. Staff numbers have also increased and Steve expects to put on more as a result of the expansion. “We offer good, reliable cars with warranties, that have been checked out thoroughly mechanically and are as reliable as possible,” Steve said. “Our prices are really competitive and we have spectacular value, particularly in the under $10,000-range for the first-time buyer. “Because of our reputation for reliable vehicles at great prices we get a lot of repeat customers who have either bought vehicles from us before or have a close friend or family who has. “Because we have much lower overheads than some city car yards, we also get buyers coming from all over who have seen a vehicle online, even as far afield as Perth and Adelaide.” Before starting CWG, Steve worked in the car industry for many years, valuing cars and supplying cars to wholesalers, so another aspect that gives them an edge on some competitors is that he has a very good grasp of what cars sell well here, ensuring cars come and go quickly and stock is constantly changing, sometimes in a matter of hours. Top of the list at the moment are low-mileage economical small cars and diesel 4WDs, which cost less to run than their petrol counterparts. Nor do Steve and his staff try and talk you into something that isn’t right for you. They just make a note of your requirements and use Steve’s extensive contacts to find exactly the right vehicle for you at a good price. In addition to being able to sell you the car you’ve been dreaming of, Steve and his staff also offer valuations, take trade-ins, will sell cars on consignment and can organise fast and competitive finance and insurance through their extensive database, both for private and company sales. Steve gives a major part of the credit to his success to his staff who like himself - are always prepared to go the extra yard to help customers, even if it means staying open late. CWG has a range of extended warranties available to provide cover for vehicles they sell. These are suitable for most makes and ages of cars and 4WDs as well as your individual budget and level of cover required. “These vehicle warranties are designed to help reduce the financial impact of unexpected costs of mechanical or electrical failure by providing cover for both parts and labour of covered components,” staff member Sarah Burch said. “In the event the failure occurs away from your home, our vehicle warranties also provide financial assistance towards the cost of emergency accommodation and car hire.” It’s our 1st birthday at our new premises… www.cwg.net.au FIND US ON FACEBOOK Country Wholesale Group Ph. 15 Uralla Road, Port Macquarie 6581 2881 1121383-PB09-14 Come and check us out we’re BIGGER and BETTER than EVER! Good price is the goal IF you have ever tried to sell a car privately, you’ll know how hard it can be. When you do get an inquiry, frequently the person will make a ridiculously low offer or even try and try to talk you into some kind of strange swap. CWG can take all the hassle out by selling your car for you on consignment, at a set price agreed up front so you know exactly where you stand. Your car will be on display in their yard, which hundreds of serious buyers visit every month, and also promoted on the web and through all major car sites. Buying a car from CWG, is much more attractive for most buyers because they can offer the purchaser finance, a warranty and the security of buying through a licensed motor dealer as well as taking a trade-in if necessary - none of which a private vendor can offer. Owner Steve Rae is also an expert when it comes to setting the price, so you can be sure the agreed price is fair market value and you haven’t under or overpriced your vehicle, losing money or putting off potential buyers as a result. “Our objective is to work for our vendors to achieve the agreed price for their car in as short a period of time as possible and we have a lot of happy vendors for whom we have done that,” Steve said. Steve Rae: “Our objective is to work for our vendors to achieve the agreed price.” Help with fine details of finance IF you need to arrange a loan to purchase the car you want to buy, the staff at CWG can help organise this for you. CWG is careful to deal only with wellknown and reputable loan institutions to give customers added peace of mind. If you need help with insurance, they can also access a wide variety of insurance products. “Loan applications are computer processed and in most cases automatically approved within hours,” staff member Sarah Burch said. “We can access a wide range of flexible loan payment methods and terms at competitive bank interest rates. “We can also arrange tax-effective and flexible finance for business applicants, such as structured leasing, chattel mortgages and commercial hire-purchase. “Obviously applicants must be approved and a number of conditions apply.” The finer details used to steam clean carpets. Its computer was nothing like those we see today, but it was a huge step forward for the paper. The people running the show were told the computer room had to have a certain temperature and they were to keep the dust at bay. A few other restrictions were imposed, but the people from all around this country town were brought in to look at history in the making. A few weeks later (and I didn’t work there at the time, not that my presence would have made any difference) everything came to a grinding halt. The people at the paper rang the only person they could find - a technician somewhere around Melbourne. He flew from Melbourne to this country town, at great expense. He looked at the machine, pulled out of his tool kit a spray something like fly killer, and sprayed all around the computer. All of a sudden, everything worked as if by magic. Then he went home, after leaving his bill. All that this early computer needed was a little bit of mothering and the elimination of some dust. The newspaper people paid what at today’s value would be thousands of dollars and said nothing. These days, computers take all sorts of punishment, including spilt coffee. When things go wrong they are usually called “bugs” in the system. A bug was initially an insect. The word, supposedly from the Welsh bwg, goes back to 1388. Then for a while it was used as a word for somebody of “assumed importance”, or what we might now call a “big shot”. Later, as a corruption of bug-law, the word was intended to “inspire terror”. My big dictionary admits defeat when trying to explain how an “object of terror” came to refer to beetles and grubs. But it goes back to 1642 to show that the word was used to describe various insects. In 1642, the ant was described as “the poorest bugge that creeps”. Then the word came to represent a burglar alarm system and, surprise, surprise, a concealed microphone “this office might have a bug in it”. Can you imagine how Richard Nixon could be undone by a bug that he planted in his own office? But that’s politics, I suppose. Anyway, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, a bug represented a person described as “pompous, proud and conceited”. Then the word meant “to annoy” and “to leave quickly”. Other words associated with bug include bugan, an evil spirit, bugbear, “supposed to devour naughty children” and bug-eyed, “an extra-terrestrial monster with bulging eyes”. After much searching, I found a reference to bug with the meaning of “a defect or fault in a machine”. Believe it or not, the first reference I found came in a mention of Thomas Edison. Edison, according to an 1889 reference, had been up two nights “discovering a bug” - possibly imaginary insects crawling through the system. I know of a technology group’s log book that included a squashed moth to show that a bug really did cause the system to crash. Neville Shute, who wrote such Australian classics as A Town Like Alice and On The Beach, wrote in Beyond the Black Stump (1956) “they worked ... until all the bugs had been ironed out”. But I’m happy that I can now tell my telephone company “this has gone wrong ever since the time of Edison”. But I doubt if they’ll take any notice. Letters Recycled thoughts I HAVE been trying to get an answer regarding the water usage by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in regard to the usage of recycled water. We seemed to have spent a lot time and money towards the installation of the purple-coloured pipes throughout the Hastings, but it seems to be a secret as to who uses the water. As well, there seems to be a restriction on recycled water use, and I refer to no taps being available for the cleaning of boats at the Westport ramp, due to a health risk. Rock’ n’ roll dancers were out in force for the Beatles Festival events in Westport Park on the weekend. Email your letter to: [email protected] However, this recycled water can be used to spray the vineyard at Douglas Vale. Surely there is a risk there as well? I would like our council to think for once and provide a facility in Westport Park for the use of recycled water; it can’t be that hard. Barry Dowse, Port Macquarie. Substance in structure GREAT to see our fishing licence fees being spent on projects to replace reefs and structures locked up in marine parks, as per the proposed new artificial reef to go in off Port Macquarie. However, is it really necessary to spend megadollars on a pristine metal structure when a few old redundant railway rolling stock carriages and wagons would achieve the same thing, or maybe a few loads of quarry rock would suffice? I hardly think the fish would notice the difference. Let’s hope the structures are placed within the reach of smaller recreational vessels, not halfway to New Zealand. Doug Sutton, Wauchope. Thumbs Up Thumbs Down Thumbs Up TO the thoughtful person who found and returned a lost bank card to the bank. Thank you from a much relieved elderly pensioner. Thumbs Down TO myself for turning my car in front of a white 4WD to get to the library and then abusing them. I am so sorry. I was in the wrong both road-wise and in abusing you and should not have behaved the way I did. Thumbs Up TO Mel who forwarded my letter that was found in the park that flew out my car window and posted it for me to Tasmania. The recipient was in touch to let me know she had received it and mentioned the note you wrote on the envelope, saying you had found the letter. Thumbs Down TO people who don’t pick up after their dogs when walking in a public place. Just trod in some on a track in Lighthouse and was not the most pleasant of experiences, to put it mildly. Does it really take that much effort to take a bag with you, pick up after your dog, and pop it in the next bin you come across? Thumbs Up TO Coles at Lighthouse for tracking me down and returning my wallet safely. Really appreciate your efforts. Thumbs Up Thumbs Down is your chance to have your say. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27 When a network’s treasure has been poured into the (failed) Schapelle Corby tale, and the more successful Love Child, then naught but the dregs are left. Cue from stage left, Fat Tony and Co. The viewing public is at a loss to understand why the events of the first Underbelly have been revisited in this shoddy, sloppy re-telling. Basically, the same series of events - but this time with a focus on Tony Mokbel, the “Fat Tony” of the title - are being revisited. It seems like a lot of the same actors are reprising the same roles from last time - or maybe it just seems that way. This sub-standard effort completes the long, slow decline of the franchise. The script is very average, the production values a bit less than average, the cinematography standard, and the acting - well, to put it mildly, some of the acting is pretty rough. Leading the way here is the poor soul cast as Roberta Williams. You might have thought it impossible for that character ever to become a caricature of herself - but the over-acting here achieves that previously unreachable goal. One benefit of the generally low standard of the show is that it in no way glamorises the criminal element in the way that the first Underbelly did. - Jason Beck 6.00 News. 9.30 ABC News. 10.10 Children’s Programs. 10.35 BTN. 11.00 Human Planet. 12.00 Midday. 12.30 Talking Heads. 1.00 Shaun Micallef’s MAD AS HELL. 1.30 The Checkout. 2.00 Parliament. 3.00 Rain Shadow. 4.00 New Tricks. 5.00 Eggheads. 5.30 News. 6.05 Grand Designs. 7.00 News. 7.30 7.30. 8.00 The Checkout. 8.30 Janet King.
