I hope you are all enjoying your time at the club. The condition of the golf course remains a major concern and the top priority of the Board of Directors. We have all heard it said that the fairway conditions get this way every summer and it’s not any worse than previous years. That is no longer good enough. We have established a relationship with a very hands-on consultant and will be seeking his opinion on long and short term solutions to our fairway issues. It is no longer a question of should we over seed our fairways. We must end this practice. The only question is should we end it this year or next? The advantage of over seeding is that we have a green lush looking golf course through the winter and early spring. The problem with this practice is that it inhibits the growth of our Kikuyu. The long term solution to our fairway problems is more Kikuyu, not less. However there is no quick fix. When we end the over seeding practice, we will experience bare spots throughout the winter months which may be difficult to repair in the short term. As we transition to this longer term solution to our fairway conditions, we ask for your understanding. We will need to trade some degree of playability in the short term for a long overdue solution to our fairway issues. As of this writing, this issue is still under discussion, but will be decided in the coming days. In recent weeks Enrique, our General Manager and Chris, our Head Pro, have collaborated in establishing new standards and policies for golf course maintenance. The most significant change is that Chris’s opinions on playability will be taken into consideration in the maintenance of our golf course. Perhaps you have already seen improvements in firmer greens and drier area around those greens. Good job Enrique and Chris! We will keep you posted on course conditions as we continue to address these issues. Play well, play often, Len Midtgaard Fall is finally here, and we have many exciting events coming up this month. Lobster Night will be on Friday, September 19th, and reservations are required so be sure to reserve your table today. Our very own chef Keith will be preparing a delicious menu that you do not want to miss out on. Also, our $2 Buck Chuck Tournament and the End of Summer Bash are on September 13th. Come join us for a pig roast BBQ and a game of golf. Members, spouses, family, as well as guests are all welcome to sign-up! This month we have the last of our Match Play Tournaments, as well as our Couples Club Tournament on September 21st. Sign up with Chris Frame in the pro-shop. Enrique Contreras General Manager For everyone planning a holiday event, be sure to make Candlewood your venue of choice. The holidays are approaching fast, and our catering director Emily Peery is here to help! Reserve your date today at (562) 941-1228 ext 226, or by email at [email protected] Enrique Contreras Divot September 2014—Page 4 Pro’s Corner Chris frame Class a pga professional Attention Members: Due to extreme heat and humidity be sure to hydrate and stay cool while playing. Please seek help if you or your fellow members need medical attention. Thank you to all members and staff for looking out for each other while out on the course. The Dog Days of Summer are here! It’s hot and humid so make sure you are well hydrated while you are playing golf. There are other challenges you must be aware of when you are on the golf course. As I am sure you have noticed, there is a growing problem with Fire Ants. These ants are everywhere! We have been using an “orange flag” system to track and poison these insects, but eliminating them may not be realistic. We will continue to control them, but in the meantime please avoid these ant hills and report them to the Golf Shop staff when seen. Our squirrels are getting fat! PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE SQUIRRELS! These squirrels are now becoming aggressive and destroying golf bags on the golf course looking for food. Please help us out by not feeding these critters. September will be by far the busiest month of the year at Candlewood. We have booked several outside events along with our club events that will impact regular play. Here is a short breakdown of those events; Monday, September 1st –Labor Day Casino Golf Members Tournament Friday, September 12th –7:30am Member Shotgun (due to outside event) Saturday, September 13th –End of Summer Bash / 15” Cup Tournament *10:00am Shotgun (no play prior to Shotgun)* Sunday, September, 14th –7:30am Member Shotgun (due to outside event) Saturday, September 20th -7:30am Member Shotgun (due to outside event) Sunday, September 21st –Couples Club Championship 1:00pm shotgun *Tee closed from 11:00am – 1:30pm* Friday, September 26th -7:30am Member Shotgun (due to outside event) All of these events will be posted in front of the Golf Shop with more information. Chris Frame, PGA Divot September 2014—Page 5 Alex Jiminez has been a member at Candlewood Country Club for twenty-one years. He and his wife Connie celebrated fifty-two years of marriage recently. They have three children, and Alex loves spending time with their seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. It isn’t uncommon for Alex to drive out to Bakersfield to watch his grandson’s track meet, and then drive back home to Whittier. Alex grew up near Chavez Ravine, but when the land was being purchased on which to build the stadium, his family moved to the City of Commerce. There were six brothers and three sisters to be raised by a single mom. Alex lacked a positive father figure and says his mother did the best she could. By sixth grade, Alex was peddling newspapers on the streets of Los Angeles. He was making five dollars a day to help his mom with living expenses. He landed a second job selling tamales, but was let go for eating more tamales than he was selling. Alex learned how to survive and make money from his experiences on the streets of L.A. In his teens, Alex used to travel with a local Chicano band named the Imperials. He would help the band set up their equipment at local dance halls. The band was well known, and they played in L.A. and venues in El Monte and Reseda. It was in a dance hall in Reseda that he met his wife to be, Connie. She wasn’t impressed at first because Alex couldn’t dance very well. She says he barely moved his feet and kept his hands close to his waist. “He reminded me of a bobble head Chihuahua”, says Connie. “However,” she continues, “He was a charmer.” They exchanged phone numbers and were married when Alex was nineteen. Alex eventually settled into the sales profession. If there is a profit margin, he will sell it. From bags to beans to snacks to toiletries, Alex will move it for you. “It’s all about the invoices,” says Alex. This hard work and dedication has afforded the Jiminez family to live a comfortable life. He always thought he’d be working at a private country club, never being an actual member. Alex plays in the Weekday/Weekend skins games. Sometimes he’ll arrive a couple hours late, invite himself to play in your group, and bring the nice pace you had going down to a snail’s pace. Do you really have to plum-bob that two-foot putt for a seven? He loves to win money from Dongy. They tooey-tooey each other constantly. After a round of golf, Alex relaxes with a glass of wine in the Oak Room and chats it up with his fellow golfers. Alex has played in the Old Tom Morris, team play, and senior team play. He is a fierce competitor who never gives up. You see, Alex is a man’s man who would give you the shirt off his back. And if you see the Member of the Month parking space open, just pull into it like he usually does. You finally received the recognition you thought would never happen. Congratulations, Aleccc! Thank you to Mr. McCabe for his contribution to the article. Divot September 2014—Page 6 A repeat performance by Diana Mitani for winning Trophy Day again in August 2014 C.C.C. W.G.A.
