Kansas City martial artists who are members of the World Karate Association (WKA)
United States National Sport Karate Team competed last week at the Unified World
Karate Championships. The event saw thousands of athletes from over 70 countries
represented in competition. The United States Team captured 52 Gold Medals and 7 of
them came back to Kansas City.
The United States WKA Team fielded 22 athletes from throughout the United
States. The team is coached by Kansas City's own Bob Leiker. Leiker is a 9th Degree
Black Belt, 6-Time World Champion, a promoter of one of the largest martial arts events
in the world, the AmeriKick Internationals in Philadelphia, PA, and co-developer and
instructor for The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation.
Jarrett Leiker, the Team Captain, led the way by capturing yet two Gold Medals (29 in
his resume) in both the Men’s Black Belt Traditional Kata division, and the Overall
Grand Champion, defeating all black belt adult forms and weapons divisional
winners. Jarrett resides in Kansas City and is an attorney at Davis, Bethune & Jones,
LLC and an instructor at AmeriKick Martial Arts in Overland Park.
Locals Loren Jevons-Lee won 2 Gold medals in Women's Sparring and Women's
Continuous Sparring; Daniel Schulte won a Gold in Junior Boys Team Fighting, and in
16-18 year old Traditional Forms, as well as Silver Medals in 16-18 year old Open
Weapons and 16-18 year old Open Forms and Bronze in 16-18 year old Musical
Weapons and 16-18 year old Musical Forms; Michaela Roxas captured Gold in Female
16-18 year old Creative Forms and 16-18 year old Traditional Forms and a Bronze in
Team Synchronized Forms with her brother Matthew; Matthew Roxas earned a Gold in
13-15 year old Creative Weapons and Bronze in Team Synchronized Forms; Kate Dunlea
earned Silver in the 13-15 year old Female Sparring and a Silver in Team Synchronized
Forms; and Hannah Murray earned a Silver Medal in Team Synchronized Forms, and a
Silver Medal in 11-13 year old Traditional Forms.
