Page 1 of 6 ISSUE NO 1 (NOVEMBER 2014) 2014 AUSTRALIAN OPEN TITLES This year’s Australian Titles were held in Kingscliff, Northern NSW from 8–13 September. The Titles were well contested with 45 entrants, including four New Zealand competitors (Steve Gibbs, Heather Seaton, Jo Zervos and Nigel Bryant) and a South African competitor (Malan Calitz). Following a welcome function on Sunday, 7 September the Titles were held over six days and were a tremendous success, capped off by a day of finals and closing function on Saturday, 13 September. The winners of the 10 divisions contested were as follows: DIVISION WINNER Open Men Open Women Juniors (<20) New Age (20-29) Seniors (30-39) Masters (40-49) Grand Masters (50-59) Veterans (60+) Novice B Grade Rees Duncan Lisa Ryan Bryce Campbell Ben Buckley Dale Randahl Tony Cherry Bill Campbell Gary Ross Shane McIntosh Col Sugars Congratulations also to Lisa Ryan for taking out the Most Ripped Abs Award (and putting all the male competitors to shame in the process). It was tremendous to see former Australian Open Women’s Champion Karen Campbell make her comeback to competitive waveski surfing during the Titles. The Campbell Family waveski surfing dynasty figured prominently, taking out two wins and two seconds in their respective divisions. If an award had been given for dancing at the post-Titles bash on the Saturday night Shane McIntosh would have added to the Novice trophy he received earlier in the evening. A very big thank you to those involved in organising the Titles for the hard work they did – Brett Titterton, Tony Cherry, Brenda Cherry, Russell Hudson, John Lemon, Jane Byrnes and Julie Van den Driest. Also, a very big thank you to the sponsors, numbering 25 in total (mostly from the local Kingscliff and surrounding business community), who supported the Titles. 2014 AUSTRALIAN WAVESKI SURFING TOUR The 2014 Australian Titles were the last event on the 2014 Australian Waveski Surfing Tour calendar. Congratulations to Dale Randahl (the esteemed WSA President) who won this year’s Tour. Who better to kick off with than 10 times (a record) Australian Open Men’s Champion and four times World Open Men’s Champion, Rees Duncan? 1. What age did you start waveski surfing? I started surfing on one of my dad’s old skis at age 11. He joined the Clarence Valley Waveski club and I started competing at age 12. 2. What got you into the sport? One of dad's mates, Steve Bailey, had an old ski and got dad involved. As above. 3. Greatest influence(s) on your waveski surfing career? My father Rees Snr was always my inspiration and I only ever wanted to be as good as him. As the years went by and I improved Steve Bailey would take me to all of the comps as mum and dad didn't have the time due to work commitments. Roger Buck started a training group and we met on a regular basis with a board rider trainer which then took my surfing to another level. These three guys had a massive influence on my surfing ability and competition savvy. 4. Career highlights? My world titles are my highlights. The first one in 1989, Newquay, England was in front of 20,000 holiday makers at the age of 17. My mum and grandma were on the beach. 1991 Duranbah I won both the Open and Juniors. 2007 Gisborne NZ, after such a long break I won the open with Trish and the boys supporting me and then 2009 Emerald Beach after spending six months organising the comp, dislocating my shoulder on day three, then winning the Open and Seniors at my home break was very emotional. 5. Favourite manoeuvre to execute? My favourite manoeuvre isn't a really a manoeuvre. I love getting barrels and will look for a barrel over any functional move where possible. Page 5 of 6 ISSUE NO 1 (NOVEMBER 2014) 6. Favourite waveski surfing locations? My favourite wave is Hideaways in the Mentawai’s. It's a long wave that can provide massive barrels but also big air opportunities if you’re willing to go for it. 7. What do you like about waveski surfing? I enjoy riding a ski over other forms of surfing as I can do things on a ski that I can't on a board. I also enjoy the social side of the sport and met and made many close friends all around the world. 8. Tip(s) for people new to the sport? The quickest way to improve is talk to other riders and gather feedback on their experiences. Learning to Eskimo roll will not only give you confidence, it also makes the surf a safer environment for yourself and others in the surf. 9. Do you or have you participated in other sports? I played soccer up to age of 11. Once I started surfing I was hooked and stopped playing soccer. I have also competed in spearfishing competitions for about 10 years while my boys were young, but once they got into surfing I was tempted back to surfing and waveski comps. 10. Nickname? I have never had a real nickname but when we went to the Mentawai’s to make “Gateway to Sorga”, we had a small role play in part of the movie and my nickname was “Masterblaster”, which is one of my dad's nicknames from years ago.
