Welcome to the 2014 Summer Programme, This
year see a slight restructuring of our calendar to
allow for the development of the Clifton College
drama productions, which this year include
David Copperfield and an outside production of
A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
your coffee cravings before settling down to
enjoy the shows.
As well as these great College productions we
also have some of the best of Bristol’s dramatic
societies performing a wide selection of musicals
– from old favourites such as ‘The Sound of
Music’ and ‘The Gondoliers’ to less well known
(but still Tony award winning) shows such as
‘The Drowsy Chaperone’ (Don’t worry the
performance is a lot more upbeat than the title
would suggest).
This year also sees the return of the Bristol Old
Vic Theatre School’s West Country Tour which
will be gracing us with a performance of ‘Sauce
for the Goose’ before heading off into deepest
darkest Cornwall.
As well as a theatrical feast the Redgrave now
has a brand new coffee machine capable of
producing coffee shop quality cappuccinos,
lattes and espressos so why not turn up to the
performances a little early this year and satisfy

“The Gondoliers” is a wildly colourful show involving
Italian peasant girls, a wimpish and impecunious
Spanish Duke and his entourage and the usual
hilariously preposterous plot that we have come to
expect from Gilbert & Sullivan (as well as a group of
gondoliers of course).
First performed at the Savoy Theatre, London, 7th
December 1889, the opera has become one of
the most exuberant and joyous of the entire G&S
repertoire.

Georges Feydeau’s high spirited romp Sauce For The
Goose is stuffed with preening characters knitting
their legs in sexual frustration.
Its heady mix of passions, pace and pleasure are the
perfect mix for a good night out. The plot is simple:
Lucienne is being pursued by the married Pontagnac,
who is astounded to discover that she is already
married to his friend Vatelin. Lucienne has sworn to
be faithful as long as her husband remains so too. But
then a keen old ‘indiscretion’ of her husband’s arrives
with her own husband from Germany in tow.
Everyone ends up in the Hotel Ultimus, where the
guests include an old army doctor and his deaf wife
in Paris to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Beds
are swopped, infidelities discovered and everyone’s
Goose is cooked good and proper!
Untrustworthy husbands, betrayed wives, artful
servants and crazed Germans demonstrate why the
“naughty nineties” were so named, as master French
farceur Feydeau’s sparkling play switches from
riotous farce to barbed social satire.
See the ‘Stars of Tomorrow in a Play for Today’.

If you’ve ever sat in a dark theatre and thought, “Dear
Lord in heaven, please let it be good,” this is the show
for you!
‘The Drowsy Chaperone’ is a musical comedy that
will transport you into the colourful world of the
roaring twenties and leave you feeling anything
but drowsy!
Winner of 5 Tony Awards, this delightful musical
bonanza begins when a die-hard musical fanatic tries
to chase his blues away by playing his favorite LP - the
1920’s musical comedy, ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’.
From the crackle of his hi-fi, the musical magically
bursts to life in his living room, telling the story of
a pampered Broadway starlet who wants to give up
show business to get married to her debonair groom.
This show-within-a-show is complete with show
stopping musical numbers, mistaken identities,
colourful characters and rousing anthems resulting
in a riotous parody of 1920’s comedy. All theatre
lovers are sure to be taken with this charming tribute
to the musical genre.

A Brief History of the Redgrave Theatre
Built in 1966, the Redgrave was originally known
simply as the ‘Clifton College Theatre’. The design
was based on the Mermaid Theatre in London and
it was the first purpose built school theatre in the
country. The theatre was officially opened by the
actor Sir Michael Redgrave, an old boy of the College.
After his death in 1985 the theatre was renamed
‘The Redgrave Theatre’ in his honour.
Originally the theatre was only used for College
events, but in the 1970s the decision was made for
the theatre to be hired out to local drama groups
during the holidays, since then the popularity of the
Redgrave has continued to grow and it is now one of
the most successful theatres in Bristol.
