STIKEMAN ELLIOTT LLP CONNECTIONS | 2 SPOTLIGHT Rosemarie Lipman VP, People & Culture at EllisDon Corporation We recently caught up with Rosemarie, a former Tax associate in both the Toronto and London offices of Stikeman Elliott. SE:Where has your career taken you since you left Stikeman Elliott? RL:I’ve been at EllisDon since leaving Stikeman Elliott four years ago. I joined as Senior Counsel, but a short nine months later I was asked to step in as acting General Counsel due to a maternity leave. Then this past February I was promoted to the role of VP, People & Culture and now I’m in the process of expanding my role to become the VP of Corporate Services. In this capacity I will have oversight of the People & Culture, Health & Safety, Legal and Labour Relations groups. Change has become the norm! SE:What do you enjoy most about your current role? RLThe people. I enjoy being an active participant on the management team and working with a wide variety of people at a company that truly values its employees. My role involves reaching out to all employees in Canada, the Caribbean and the Middle East which gives me a broad perspective of what’s going on in the company and requires a high level of engagement. Like Stikeman Elliott, the culture is very entrepreneurial and one of our core strategies is to encourage people to communicate and share their ideas. from a number of different practice areas. The intellectual debates at the tax group meetings were thought provoking and always entertaining. Working at Stikeman, I became accustomed to working as part of a cohesive team so that was a priority moving forward in my career. SE:What advice do you have for lawyers who are new to the firm? RL:Take initiative. Don’t be afraid of change or trying something new. Volunteer to take on rewarding and stimulating work and you’ll be successful. Taking on new challenges really helped increase my confidence in dealing with both colleagues and clients and I appreciate the confidence that my mentors had in me by allowing me to get directly involved with clients. It has made speaking up in my hardhat at a construction site or before the board of directors a lot less intimidating! SE:If you could vacation anywhere, where would that be and why? RL: My ideal vacation is wherever Jim Harbell has jetted off to last. My husband and I often joke about his exotic destinations as we sit in our usual vacation spot in Florida with our kids. SE:What is your favourite memory of working at Stikeman Elliott? RL:My favourite memories are of the people and the culture of collaboration at Stikeman. When I was there I switched from tax to energy and infrastructure so I had the opportunity to work with many lawyers STIKEMAN ELLIOTT LLP CONNECTIONS | 3 alumni event | November 2014 STIKEMAN ELLIOTT LLP CONNECTIONS | 4 STIKEMAN ELLIOTT LLP CONNECTIONS | 5 Firm News & Recognitions Toronto partner Alan D’Silva and director Shanin Lott receive Lexpert Zenith Award Alan D’Silva and Shanin Lott have each received the 2014 Lexpert Zenith Award: Celebrating Today’s Leaders in Practice Excellence.
