A HUGE heart‐felt THANK YOU to all of the taxi drivers for the Memorial
Day Tri‐State Fes val!!! We ran two taxis from the stage to the parking lot and/or
campgrounds the en re me bands were on stage… at least 34 hours. We didn’t
seem to have any trouble finding volunteers to drive taxis. Where else can you
wear a white vest, carry a radio, and zip around on four wheels, chat with people
that are enjoying themselves, while listening to the best bluegrass in the
Midwest??
In addi on to the volunteers that drove the “official” taxis, I’d like to thank all
of the board members who used their golf carts to shu le people around. They
were kept very busy, too! Special thanks to Joe Steiner who covered for me un l I
could get there on Thursday night. Also thanks to Marianne Vogie who manned
the “taxi hotline” phone un l Thursday night.
Below are the volunteers that drove taxis this fall. The (#) denotes those who
drove 2 or more shi s. Thank you so much for your me! I hope to see you again
in the fall!

first appeared at Tri‐State in 2007.
They were great then, but a er
several return appearances they are
be er than ever. Each me they come,
lead vocalist Mike Bentley brings a
passel of great new songs, along with
help from long me bassist Bryan
Russell. Rod Smith keeps the drive alive
on the five, Albon Clevenger handles the
fiddle work, and Ma Hiser rounds out
the ensemble on mandolin. Five rock
solid musicians, instrumentally and
vocally, they carry a stage show
consis ng largely of original
material. But, they approach the music
from the tradi onal side with ght,
lonesome vocals and a drive that never
leaves you hanging, evidenced nowhere
be er than on their latest album,
Another Song, which was released a
li le over a year ago.
The Missy Werner Band will be
making their second appearance at Tri‐
State. I originally became aware of this
fine group through Missy’s solo release,
DriŌing and Dreaming, which
highlighted her fine lead vocal
work; however, I soon found that this
group had considerable depth, both
instrumentally and in the suppor ng
vocal work. Missy has the string bass of
husband Ar e Werner to lay the
founda on of the band’s cohesive
sound, with considerable help from Jeff
Roberts’s banjo and the driving guitar of
Tim Strong. The Missy Werner’s Band
first release, Three Kinds of Lonesome,
was released in 2011 and, while s ll
showcasing Missy’s vocals, revealed the
band’s depth and talent for interpre ng
material. They just released a new
album en tled Turn This Heart Around –
I haven’t heard it yet, but I can’t wait!
What a treat it will be to welcome
Bull Harman and Bull’s Eye back to
Tri‐State. Bull says he is par cularly
proud of his current lineup which now
includes Alex Riffle on banjo and Allan
Sterling on resophonic guitar. In

Lee H. Bayliss, 76, of Sherwood, passed away Friday, June 27, 2014 at his residence. Lee was born
August 2, 1937 in Sherwood, Ohio, the son of the late J.V. “Vern” and Ruth R. (Renz) Bayliss. Lee
was a founder and member of Curly’s Country Grass for 36 years playing mandolin. He also played
music as a member of The Bayliss Twins Musical Duo, and the Northeast Indiana Banjo Society. Lee
and his twin brother, Leroy, were prominent in the music world. Lee was a regular at the Ne le
Lake Jams and was a long‐ me NIBGA member. He will be missed.
The

addi on, Bull’s son Wya has taken over the bass du es, as well
as some of the vocal work (I hear Mom, Tammy, is s ll around
to keep him in line, though). The mandolin spot is s ll held
down in rock‐solid fashion by seven year Bull’s Eye member,
Hal Co rell. And, of course, the group s ll features Bull and his
monster guitar work. No word yet on when the group plans a
recording project with the new lineup, but I’ll be anxiously
awai ng!
Another new addi on to our lineup is Kim Robins and
Forty Years Late. Kim was born into a musical family and
began singing in church at age 5, eventually becoming the
youngest original member of the Li le Nashville (IN) Opry.
She has assembled a high‐energy, fast‐paced ou it with Caleb
Edwards on guitar, Kyle Smith on banjo, Spencer Sallee on
mandolin, and Holden Stephens on bass.
Making a return appearance will be the Atkinson Family
from upstate New York. Although the Atkinsons honed their
sound in the Adirondacks, it was inspired by the Stanley
Brothers and other bluegrass pioneers. In addi on to
performing a range of bluegrass standards, they feature
contemporary tunes and originals. They will be featuring songs
from an upcoming album due soon, with Dick (banjo), Shelene
(guitar), and Laura (bass) Atkinson spli ng me on lead
vocals. Rounding out the ensemble are 2003 Na onal Dobro
Champion, Dave Bevins, and Adam Atkinson on mandolin.

Dear Friends in the Northern Indiana Bluegrass Associa on,
A very sincere thanks for your support of the Northeastern
Indiana Suzuki Guild! Our students are enjoying fiddle
classes and looking forward to the upcoming Bluegrass
Fes val.

Not wan ng to miss the spring K'ville fes val but Gary not
being able to tow the trailer yet, we "camped" out at the
Best Western (just next door to the fes val grounds).
WOW, we did not realize how many bluegrassers stay
there, we ran into many at breakfast me (a dozen plus) &
found out later many other friends stay there, too. The
desk clerk on duty during the day was so friendly & so
accommoda ng to us; she stated how much they enjoy
having the bluegrassers there. It showed ‐ the rooms were
great, you can get a "bluegrass" rate (at least in the spring),
wonderful breakfast... The only thing we told her that
would be even be er would be a walk way from their hotel
through the fence at that end. We literally could walk
through the door on the side facing the fairgrounds right to
our room. If you don't have a rig or can't take one (for
whatever reason), do check out the Best Western!!!! SO
fortunate to have a GREAT "camping" place SO close to the
fes val grounds!!!! ~ Maggie Bilby
