PROFESSOR UMBERTO ARENA_ SHORT CURRICULUM VITAE Umberto Arena is full professor of “Solid waste management” and "Industrial Pollution Control Engineering" at the Second University of Naples. He graduated in Chemical Engineering at the University "Federico II" of Naples, where he also obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 1987. He is an Associate Editor of the Waste Management journal of Elsevier. He is a member of Managing Board of the International Waste Working Group (www.iwwg.eu), and in the framework of this association he is the leader of the IWWG-Task Group on Thermal Treatments. He is a Member of the board of Directors of AMRA-Analysis and Monitoring of Environmental Risk s.c. a r.l. (www.amracenter.com), where he is the Coordinator of Antropic Risk Area and the leader of the department of Waste Management and Energy Generation. He has a long experience in the field of waste management, and waste-to-energy in particular. In the 1998 he participated as technical expert in national committee for the public tender of the large-scale waste-to-energy plant (600kt/y) of Naples area, carried out within the context of EU Directives and Regulations. In the 2011-2014 he was one the members of the technical national committee for the assessment of large-scale waste-to-energy plants in the Regione Campania. He is or was the scientific responsible and the team leader in several Italian projects about wasteto-energy plants and waste management planning. In particular: i) for the technical, environmental and economic assessment of the large-scale WtE plant in Malagrotta, Rome (2009); ii) for the design and the technical, environmental and economic assessment of a medium-scale WtE plant for plastic wastes financially supported by Conai-National Consortium for Packaging (2009-2011); iii) for the industrial waste management planning of Regione Campania (2008); iv) for the municipal and industrial solid waste management planning of District of Caserta (2009); v) for the municipal solid waste management planning of Regione Campania (2010-2011); vi) for the municipal solid waste management planning of Regione Molise (2012); vii) for the design and the technical, environmental and economic assessment of a WtE plant for SRF-solid recovered fuel in Isernia (2013); and many more. All these experiences have been largely described by the numerous papers published on prestigious international scientific journals. He is a member of some international committees for waste management and waste-to-energy, such as those of: − l’International Scientific Committee of the Int. He gave plenary lectures at international conferences in the field of waste-to-energy, as that recently given in Hong Kong at the Int. Conference on Solid Waste 2013. He is a consultant of several companies and research centers. In particular, he worked (or still works) with FATER, ENEL, ENI (Snamprogetti, Enitecnologie, Agip Carbone, Enichem Anic), CONAINational Consortium for Packaging), ENEA-Environmental Department, Eco-Bat, CIRA (the National Centre for Aerospatial Research), Sagit-UNILEVER, Ansaldo Energia, Asia.biz., Eco-Engineering, ChemTex, Regione Campania, Regione Molise, Turin Polytechnic. He is a referee of several international scientific journals, such as Waste Management, Waste Management&Research, Journal of Industrial Ecology, Combustion Science and Technology, Fuel, Fuel Processing Technology, Chemical Engineering Sciences, The Chemical Engineer Journal, Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineers, Polymer Degradation & Stability, Powder Technology, Process Safety and Environmental Protection, Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries, mainly for the areas of waste-to-energy processes and technologies, waste management, life cycle assessment, waste-to-feedstock processes. He is author of more than 80 scientific papers published in international scientific journals (Waste Management, Fuel, Energy, Waste Management&Research, Resource Conservation&Recycling, AIChE Journal, Chem. Eng. Sci., Chem. Eng. Journal, Ind.&Eng.Chem.Res., J. of Industrial Ecology, Polymer Degradation & Stability, Powder Techn., Combustion Sci. and Techn., Combustion and Flame, Canadian J. of Chem. Engineers, Japanese J. of Chem. Engineering, Int. J. of Life Cycle Assessment, J. of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries). He wrote chapters in some multi-authored books: “Gas Mixing” in “Circulating Fluidized Beds" (Chapman & Hall, 1997); "Fluidized Bed Pyrolysis of Plastic Wastes" in "Feedstock Recycling and Pyrolysis of Waste Plastics" (J. Wiley&Sons, 2006); “Fluidized bed gasification” in "Fluidized-bed technologies for near-zero emission combustion and gasification" (Woodhead Publishing, 2013). Umberto Arena’s research and professional activity is mainly oriented to several aspects of waste management, with particular attention to: • • • • Thermal treatments (combustion, gasification and pyrolysis) of different wastes and biomass. Design and operation criteria of fluidized bed combustors and gasifiers. Technological, economical and environmental aspects of the different recycling and recovery routes (mechanical recycling, feedstock recycling and energy recovery) of municipal and industrial wastes. Application of Life Cycle Assessment, Material Flow Analysis and Substance Flow Analysis as tools for environmental assessment of waste management planning and for optimization of different waste treatments. 2 MAIN PUBLICATIONS_LAST FIVE YEARS 1.
