What is the Goal of Couponing?

What is the Goal of Couponing?



The goal of Couponing is to save your family money by cutting your family grocery budget by 50 – 100%.
It is not just cutting out a few coupons every once in a while to save $5.00 or $10.00. That will bring you
minor savings and you will become discouraged and not continue couponing.
We want to shop when the item is on sale and we can use coupons to maximize our savings.
How? We use two concepts to do this.


Product prices fluctuate on a sales cycle around 8 to 12 weeks long. When an item is at its lowest price in
that cycle you want to buy enough of that item to get you through until it comes back on sale.
When the price is at its lowest, you use your coupons to reduce the price even lower. Just buying when the
product is at its lowest point will save you $$ but if you MATCH a coupon to that sale price, you will pay
close to nothing for every item!
Example:
Let’s assume your family uses 1 jar of sauce a week. Let’s assume the sales cycle is 8 weeks and the jar of sauce is
$3.00.
Buying at Regular Price: Buy 1 jar of sauce each week for 8 weeks
8 weeks = 8 jars of sauce
8 x $3.00 = $24.00
Buying on sale BOGO @ $3.00 & use $1/2 MQ
4 jars are $3.00 each and 4 jars are free 4 x $3.00 = $12.00 - $4.00 (coupons) = $8.00
We just saved $16.00 by stocking up when the item is on sale. Each jar cost $1.00
How do I start shopping like this?



DO NOT CUT ANY Coupons until you see the weekly match ups. Instead…save all inserts from the Sunday
paper. If you save the entire insert to cut as needed make sure you mark the date on insert so that you can
find it when you see a coupon can be used. If you are already thinking that you don’t need to keep them
ALL just wait until you see an item on sale and with the coupon you can get it for free or even earn money
toward other items in your basket. Remember, coupons are considered cash at the grocery store.
Start to shop buying only the things that are on sale and using your coupons. Then when an item is on sale
you STOCKPILE. I recommend stockpiling for 8 - 12 weeks’ worth of an item because that is the common
time it takes for all the products in the grocery store to go on sale. Once you have a good stockpile you will
only be shopping for sale items and never having to pay non-sale prices (you will be using only out of your
stockpile). Also, once you pay an amazing price for something - like $0.75 for cereal - you will not want to
have to pay the regular price ever again.
Give up what brand loyalties you may have. You have to think about what items you absolutely will not give
up the brand loyalty on. I prefer Crest toothpaste, but when push came to shove *FREE* toothpaste was
better than Crest toothpaste. This is a choice you and your family can make.
House/Store/Generic brands are not the best deal. National brand items bought on sale with coupons
become incredibly cheaper than house brand items. This is a hard lesson to learn if this is what you have
always reached for. You will realize that it is cheaper to buy Hellmann’s mayonnaise on sale BOGO for $4.59
and use $1.00 off coupons on each item instead of buying the store brand mayonnaise for $3.59.
o For example you would spend $2.59 for 2 jars of Hellmann’s mayonnaise, which is $1.00 less than
the one jar of the store brand.
Shopping at Costco and Sam’s will become a thing of the past. I will sometimes get dairy items and items
that do not have coupons often or that rarely go on sale. Most of the time though buying the 4 boxes of
cereal for $10.00 at Costco never compares to getting 4 boxes for $4.00 TOTAL (the average price of cereal
when bought correctly is approximately $1.00 per box).
Personal care items that could be a good deal can’t even touch being FREE at Walgreens or CVS.
With buying the “Economy Size of anything” think about this: One large CoffeeMate creamer equates to 4
small size bottles, the cost of the large one is $6.00 and each small one is $2.00. It looks like you are saving


$2.00 by purchasing the larger one (because it would cost you $8.00 to buy the small ones that equal the
amount in the one large one)… IF YOU DON’T ADD coupons into the equation. Now use a $1.00 coupon (on
each item) and the small ones total $4.00 but the large one cost $5.00. Using coupons when an item is on
sale will beat the tiny discount you get for buying in bulk any day!
On the same line of thought…sometimes it is better to get many small packages rather than a few bigger
packages. If a small bottle of salad dressing is on sale for $1.00 and the big bottle is $2.00 and I have a
bunch of $1/1 coupons I would rather get 10 small bottles and pay $0 than 4 big bottles and pay $4.00. I
am getting the same amount of salad dressing but I will take FREE every time!
Where do I get coupons?
The number one question people ask when they see how much I save is:
Where do you find all the coupons? They’re everywhere! Once you start paying attention, you’ll be amazed at the
number and variety of coupons available.




Newspaper Inserts: The best place to find coupons is in the Sunday paper. There are three different inserts
that come out on a regular basis: Smart Source (SS), Red Plum (RP) and Procter & Gamble (PG). You will
want to get your hands on 4 to 6 inserts each week. Does that sound excessive? Well let’s say you can get
cereal for $0.75 per box when using a coupon. This goes back to stockpiling and if you want to buy 6 boxes
of cereal, you want to have 6 coupons for the sale. You can buy newspapers, have newspapers delivered,
ask friends and neighbors to save you their inserts, etc.
Printable Coupons: You can print coupons from several sites online for free. The first time you print coupons
you will be asked to install software that allows your computer to print coupons.
o You can print coupons from the following websites: www.coupons.com , www.smartsource.com,
www.redplum.com , www.couponnetwork.com , www.target.com
o The industry standard allows you to print 2 coupons per computer.
o Remember, it’s illegal to photocopy coupons.
Other Coupons: There are other coupons that are found throughout the store and on the products. These
include blinkies, tearpads, and peelies.
Store Coupons: Many stores also publish store coupons that can be stacked with manufacturers’ coupons.
Keep your eyes peeled for booklets from Publix, Winn Dixie and Target.
Stacking Coupons:
If you have a store coupon (ex. Target, Publix, Winn Dixie, Walgreens and CVS) and a manufacturer’s coupon you
can use both!! You cannot use two manufacturer’s coupons or two store coupons for the same product though.
Example from earlier Sauce $3.00/jar – Sale BOGO – $1/2 MQ Buy 8 jars
Well now I have a Store Coupon for $1.00 – I can use 8 store coupons - My sauce is now FREE!!!!
8 jars x $3.00 = $24.00 - $12.00 (sale) - $4.00 (MQ) - $8.00 (PQ) = $0
How do I know what is on sale?
There are many websites that show you what is on sale (match – ups) and also tell us where to find the coupons to
use on the products we want to buy.
