NEWS FROM THE PROVINCE
1. Nouvelles du Sénégal
a) Journée de fraternité à Popenguine
Sous l’initiative du Fr. Etienne SENE, conseiller provincial chargé du Sénégal, les Frères de Saint
Jean de Dieu en mission au Sénégal (sauf quelques absents pour des raisons de santé ou de
congé) se sont réunis à Popenguine dans le cabanon (acquis par les premiers missionnaires de
l’Ordre en 1981) le samedi 23 juillet 2014.
Le Fr. André SENE, secrétaire général, en vacances durant cette période était vivement de la
partie.
Ce fut une rencontre de réunion, d’échanges mais aussi de détente. L’ambiance très fraternelle
et détendue a permis à tout un chacun de revigorer pour la relance du développement main
dans la main de cette partie de l’Ordre en Afrique.
Par ailleurs, il a été constaté que ce cabanon a besoin d’être réfectionné. Et des frères ont été
désignés pour diriger les travaux.
b) DalalXel Fatick
Don de World Vision Fatic
Le Centre de Santé Mentale DalalXel de
Fatick a reçu de l’ONG World Vision Fatick
un appui financier pour l’acquisition de 21
matelas pour les patients hospitalisés. Cet
appui très précieux contribuera à
améliorer les conditions d’hospitalisation
de nos frères atteints de troubles
mentaux. Ces matelas ont été
réceptionnés par le centre le 16
septembre 2014 à 15h en présence de
l’administration et de certains personnels
du centre.
Avec cet appui, World Vision Fatick vient
une fois de plus confirmer et renforcer sa
relation de partenariat avec DalalXel de
Fatick entamée depuis des années.
c) DalalXel Thiès
Jumelage avec DalalXel Fatick
Il a été organisé le samedi 20 septembre 2014, une journée d’hospitalité entre les
collaborateurs de DalalXel Thiès et DalalXel Fatick à DalalXel Thiès.
Ils étaient nombreux à répondre à cette journée. Ce fut une occasion d’échanges et de
connaissance entre collaborateurs. Ces rencontres sont à pérenniser entre les deux structures
selon le souhait de tout un chacun surtout celui du Directeur des deux centres, Fr François N.
Faye. Dans son allocution, il convia les collaborateurs à découvrir et s’approprier les valeurs de
l’Ordre

Le Novice John en stage au Sénégal
préparatifs de l’Année de la vocation Hospitalière au Sénégal, le Fr. Léopold Ngor FAYE,
responsable de cette étape dans la formation a organisé un camp vocationnel. Ce camp a
rassemblé à DalalXel Thiès du 23 au 27 septembre 2014 18 jeunes désireux de s’engager dans
notre famille hospitalière.
Le thème retenu pour ce camp est : La vocation hospitalière du Fr. Jean de Dieu.
Dans le programme, on pouvait y trouver des conférences animées par les confrères, des
activités avec les malades, la visite des œuvres à Thiès ainsi que la ville de Thiès.

2. Douala
All efforts and preparations are ongoing to make sure that the new clinic at Yassa goes
operational very soon. Brothers cleaning around the clinic and a lab technitcian setting up the
laboratory.
3. Asafo
The Asafo elites wrote to the Provincial, council through MAB Chairman for Ghana,informing the
council of their intention to open a nursing school in the town. The Provincial Council did not ,
approve of it because it was not really clear what the people really wanted from the province as
regards the project. The Provincial and part of the council visited Asafo and had a meeting with
the Hospital Management Team (HMT) and the Chiefs and elders of Asafo.The Provincial
Superior told stated during the meeting that the Provincial Council could not approve the
request because the curia did not have the necessary documentation authorising the project
and also because the project had not been planned out and prepared for adequately. He thus
asked the town elders to meet with the MAB for Ghana to iron out this issues. It is our wish that
both parties respect the agreement and plan something better for the good of the people of
ASAFO.
Further more the Provincial arranged for a meeting with the Regional minister of the Western
Region to make the point of the Province clear with regard to the proposals of the ASAFO
community.
4. Accra
The Management Advisory Board of St. John of God services in Ghana had its inaugural meeting
on the 3rd of October 2014. Invited for the inauguration were Br George Castro, Br Johannes T.
and Br Simon Bekaar. The provincial Superior officially opened and closed the meeting.
Amrahia Clinic: The clinic project at Amrahia is on a good footing. It has reached the
roofing stage. On 30th September, 2014 there was an on-site meeting with the contractor,
consultant, architect, financial controller and brothers to evaluate the progress of the project.
They all had a tour of the building and the contractor was asked some necessary questions about
the
progress of the project and his responses were satisfactory.
ROME
PREPARATORY COURSE FOR SOLEMN PROFESSION
The 15th Edition of the Course in preparation for Solemn Profession is currently on-going in at
the Provincial Curia, Rome. The course, comes up every two years is aimed at bringing brothers
from all over the Order who are preparing for solemn vows, together to deepen their knowledge
and formation on the spirituality, charism and mission of the Order. The Brothers also get an
opportunity to follow the footsteps of St. John of God in Granada, and to visit important sites of
the Order.
37 brothers are participating in this edition of the course, among them four Brothers from our
Province namely: Bros Patrick NJUNGFIYINI, Paul BANAANGMEN, Cyrille BURU and
Ambroise NGONDI AKEBE. The course started on the 8th of September 2014. This weekend,
12th October 2014, the brothers will travel to Spain for the last and most important phase of the
course: ‘Following the footsteps of St. John of God”.
We will get more details on the course during the next edition of the Panorama, when the
Brothers will share their experience during the course.

BROTHER’S REFLECTIONS
THE CHURCH: GOD’S PILGRIM PEOPLE
To begin with, is important to bring to light what a
pilgrimage is all about. A pilgrimage is a journey;
a journey that has a beginning and an end. In order
to commence this journey, the pilgrim needs to do
some planning and make certain provisions that
will permit to the success of the pilgrim journey. In such planning, things like food for the
journey need to be arranged, an advance planning of the duration based on the number of
kilometers to be covered, and most importantly, someone to guide, to be as a leader of the
journey; that is one who knows perfectly the road. This is an image of pilgrimage which we will
like to apply to the notion of the church as a pilgrim people.
The church as a pilgrim people is the spouse of Christ. There is one sole reason for its
spousal mission which is that the Kingdom of God comes and the accomplishment of salvation
of humanity (Cf. GS 45). As people on a journey, the church needs someone to guide them on
the path. This journey is one that has a future expectation: the fullness of life in Christ. As a
pilgrim church founded on the person of Christ who
was lifted up from the earth so as to draw all people to
himself through his suffering, death, resurrection, and
ascension into heaven, we are on a road to holiness
which demands a good guide because of the
uncertainty of the journey to which the people are
making. Nevertheless, the church’s pilgrim path has
been made by the incarnate Son of the Father, Jesus
Christ. We also see that many who believed in him
has walked this path despite the storms that are on the
way. Just to mention a few: our Holy Father and Founder SAINT JOHN OF GOD, Saint Richard
Pampuri, Saint BennedictMenni, Saint John of the cross, Mother Therese of Calcuta, Saint Pope
John Paull II, Saint Pope John XXIII and many others. This is a sign of hope for the pilgrim
people who are still in this journey. It is a sign of hope for the pilgrim hospitallers in the manner
of St. John of God who have consecrated their lives to bring to God’s people the unconditional
love of Christ.
From the point of view of the Old
Testament, we see how the people of Israel
were liberated from slavery in the hands of
the Egyptians by the power of Yahweh
through the leadership of Moses the servant
of God (Cf Ex. Chapters 13& 14). These
people had been in torments in the Egyptian
land for many years, and their greatest cry
has always been the day they will be saved
from it. Yahweh always faithful to his
promises came to their rescue and freed them. The people left Egypt and embarked on a journey.
Before leaving, they had to prepare for the journey as was commanded by the Lord(Cf Ex. 12).
On leaving, they probably knew a shorter way to take, but through the mouth of Moses the
leader, God changed the road, leading them to a direction which they know not (Cf Ex 13:1718). On the way, they met many obstacles, and the people will even grumble against Moses the
leader (Cf Ex. 14:10-12). But as a good leader, Moses turned the people’s grumbling into a
prayer to Yahweh, hence, he interceded for the people. When the people had crossed the sea of
reeds (red sea) and entered the desert, it seemed as if the journey had become more difficult for
them. For any lack of comfort, they grumble against Moses and throw all kinds of abusive words
on him. Little by little, through the hands of Moses, Aaron, and Joshua, the pilgrim people
arrived their destination; the land of milk and honey which God had promised them (the
Promised Land).
The church as a pilgrim people is the church of Christ. It is a church that is on the move
to attain that perfect holiness which Christ himself
attained and gave glory to the Father. This move
begins here on earth as it is being guided by Christ
himself through the actions of the Holy Spirit which
he has left as the comforter and advocate. In this
move/ journey, the church which is being nourished
by the body and blood of Christ, will become
sharers one day in the glorious life of the saints in
heaven. This is the eschatological hope as promised
by God the Father which has already began in
Christ and lived here on earth by the outpouring of the Spirit.
In order to attain this hope, the church just like the Israelites is not fully perfect. It is still
seeking for perfections on its journey to the Promised Land; the heavenly Jerusalem where it will
join with the choirs of angels in singing the Holy HolyHoly. Hence, the church needs
transformation, conversion where there will be that complete change of heart: change in
attitudes, in behavior, and in the way of thinking. Though with the imperfections, the church
manifests and makes present the kingdom of God. This kingdom is the reign of God which has
already began here on earth by the pilgrim people of God. United with Christ, the pilgrim people
who are already striving to make Christ presence felt, advocates for a future where they will fully
commune with God in Christ. This means that the church as a pilgrim people has a destination
which it is heading to where there will be the experience of the fullness of peace, love, joy, and
unity. Given the imperfect nature of the church, there is the need for transformation; that
continues renewal in order to be more closely united with Christ its head and source of hope.

MON EXPRIENCE DE COLLABRATION DANS LA MISSION AVEC LA PROVINCE ROMAINE A
L’HOPITAL SAINT PIERRE DE ROME
Introduction
Notre collaboration avec la Province Romaine a commencé tout d’abord, par l’acquisition
d’un appareilÉlectro-encéphalogramme pour le Centre SanteMentaleDalal-xel de Thiès :
par le biais de l’AFMAL. Ensuite, vientl’accompagnement à la professionnelle, en
vued’unecréation d’un centre de diagnostiqueNeurophysiologique.C’estainsiquechaque six
mois, l’hôpital Saint Pierre de Rome envoieuneéquipecomposée de médecinsneurologues et
de techniciensneurophysiologiques à Dalal-Xel de Thiès.
Hospitalité
Mon accueil à l’hôpital Saint Pierre étaitfantastique ; tout a étéorganiséavantmonarrivée.
Tout
le
monde
m’attendait
avec
impatience
les
confrères,
les
collaborateursreligieuxcommelaïcs.
Durant
tout
le
long
de
monséjour,
l’ambianceétaitfraternelle, cordiale et d’ailleurs je peux dire amicale. J’avais tout à ma
disposition : au niveau physique, matériel, économique et spirituel.
Professionnelle
Je passaistoutes les matinées au service de la Neurologie pour le travail avec
mescollèguesetmaitres en même temps. Tout unchacund’eux a voulum’apprendrequelque
chose. C’estpourcelaquej’aipuapprofondirmesconnaissancessur la technique de l’électroencéphalogramme et appendrequelques notions surl’électromyogramme.
Au niveau des relations interpersonnelles entre collègues, j’aitrouvéune ambiance
formidable de paix, de joie et d’amour du travail. Cecidonc a donné au service de la
Neurologieunespace de travail avec un professionnalismemaisdans un esprit humanitaire.
Ces conditions que je viens de citer ontpermis au service de la Neurologie de suivre et de
respecter la philosophie et les valeurs de l’OrdreHospitalier de Saint Jean de Dieu
(fatebenefratelli) vis à vis du malade qui sont : Hospitalité, Respect,
ResponsabilitéQualité, spiritualité.
Santé
Au niveau de la Santé on s’estbienoccupé de moi :unevisiteophtalmologique,
uneRésonancemagnétique ( IRM) , le doplaire, un Bilancompletd’analyses au Laboratoire.
Sociale
Le matinc’était le travail professionnel.L’après midi c’était le moment de la sociologiedans
les familles.J’aiétéinvitédans beaucoup de famillesou nous avonsbu, mangé, partagé des
idéessur la mission. Nous avonsdoncpujoindrel’utile a l’agréable. C’était pour moi un
moment riche d’expériencefraternel, d’amitié etd’acquisprofessionnels.
CONCLUSION
Je remercie le PèreProvinciale de la Province Romaine le Fr. Gerardo qui a accepté la
demanded’invitationmonPèreProvinciale Fr. Bartholomew Kamarade la Province Saint
Augustind’Afrique.
Je remercieégalement
le Fr. PietroCicinelli ; le Président de l’AFMAL qui
n’aménagédepuistoujours, aucun effort pour l’accomplissement de la mission en Afrique,
surtout au Sénégal et précisément au centre de Dalal-Xel de Thiès.
Je remercieaussi le Fr. Miguel leSupérieur de la communauté de Saint Pierre qui a tout
préparé pour moi : accueil, logement, nourriture et santé. Et avec luitous les membres de la
communauté des frères, les prêtresaumôniers de l’hôpital, les deuxcommunautés des
sœurs, la famille du Fr. Gerardo avec les pizzas au fourre.
Mesremerciementsvont à l’endroit de tout le personnel de l’hôpitalmaissurtoutetsurtout à
mescollègues et formateurs de la neurologie. Je remercie au passage toutesfamilles qui
m’ontinvité : la familled’Anastasiases parents, sestentes et oncles, sessœurs avec mention
spéciale pour sesgrand parents, sans oublier Jean Carlo qui nous fait visiter les musées et
les jardins du palais de la Républiqueitalienne à Rome.

cousines et amis de Faleria. La famille de Ricardo et femme avec leursympathique enfant
