Thee and Me Plainfield Friends Meeting Newsletter 105 S East Street Plainfield, IN 46168 (317) 839-6490 www.PlainfieldFriends.org February 2015 I am writing this on another one of those bright, clear days we seem to be getting this January. It's good to know that the days are getting longer. We have left the shortest day of the year behind us and now the hours of daylight gradually increase. Here's a story about light and darkness: light in. Once upon a time a man lived in a house without a window. Naturally, it was very dark inside his house. There are several different types of windows that let God's light into our lives. We begin with know Jesus, who tells us he is the Light of the World (John 8:12). As we read the Bible we discover God's light in the lives of other people like Abraham, Moses, David, Jeremiah, Peter, James and John. As we live with others, we share in following the light that God gives us. And we let God's light in as we close our eyes in prayer. He said to himself, "I'm sick and tired of living in a dark house. I want to get rid of the darkness. I want light instead of darkness." How could he get rid of the darkness? He took a large bucket, filled it with darkness, carried it outside and dumped it in the gutter. He filled bucket after bucket, carried the darkness outside and emptied it. He did this all day. At the end of the day, the house was as dark as when he had started. Windows He realized this wasn't working. "There must be a better way," he said to himself. That night he went to bed very tired and very sad. But when he woke up the next morning the answer came to him. "I know how to get rid of the darkness," he said. He took a big hammer and knocked a big hole in the wall. He made a window. And through this window the bright sunlight came streaming into his dark house. And then he called his friend the carpenter and the carpenter made more windows to let more Our lives can be like a house without a window. It's dark inside. We stumble around trying to find our way. To make it light, we need a window, a window through which God's light can begin to shine in our lives. And we become the light this world needs: "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. We become insensitive to the wealth of blessings we enjoy every day. It is so easy to spend our busy lives taking for granted what a large part of the world only dreams about. There are so many things to be grateful for. We miss so much joy in life when we become too busy to admire the beauty of a sunset or marvel the perfection of a butterfly or a flower. Gratitude is not something you need to conserve. The more you use, the more you have. It is all right to give gratitude for something that on the surface seems undeserving. Gratitude will let you see deeper into its perfection. This is particularly true of the adversities in life. There appears to be an upside to every adversity in life, a new realization, a reason to be grateful. After the loss of a loved one, it is hard to put aside grief. Exploring feelings of gratitude for sharing the love and the life of the departed can heal the sorrow by bringing forth love and positive feelings. It is also a time to be grateful for all the friends and neighbors whose caring love helps to speed up the healing process. Gratitude generates feeling of serenity and peace. Try counting your blessings and feeling thankful for all you have, instead of thinking about what you wish you had. Feeling at peace is to feel close to God and this awareness of the presence of God is very enabling in dealing with our worldly problems. As I am aging, I feel grateful for the gift of an extra hour of sleep, for less pain in my joints than the day before and for the ability to take care of myself. I am especially grateful for all the wonderful memories and all the great people in my life.
