The Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) has been founded by the Senckenberg Gesellschaft
für Naturforschung, the Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, and additional partners. The mission of the
centre is to carry out internationally outstanding research on the interactions of biodiversity and climate
change at the organism level.
The working group of Prof. Katrin Böhning-Gaese (Biodiversity and Area Dynamics of Vertebrates) invites
applications for a
PhD position in
“Seed dispersal interactions and plant regeneration”
Ref. #7.4 (Fulltime)
We offer an international and interdisciplinary research environment in BiK-F and Senckenberg, affiliation
with the Goethe University Frankfurt and membership in its graduate academy GRADE, the possibility of a
research stay abroad to take advantage of our network of international collaborators, and the opportunity to
develop your research profile and to attend national and international conferences.
Your tasks:
● Investigate how biotic interactions shape the distribution of plants
● Study the mutualism between Swiss stone pine and Spotted nutcracker
● Intensive, independent fieldwork in Switzerland along elevational gradients
● Develop statistical models analysing seed dispersal and plant regeneration niches
● Collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow & Landscape Research (WSL)
Your profile:
● Master’s degree or equivalent in ecology or a related field
● Solid background in ecology, botany, and /or ornithology
● Ability and interest to undertake independent research
● Physical endurance to conduct fieldwork
● Experience in fieldwork and the design of field experiments
● Good skills in statistical modelling, preferentially in the programming language R
● Very good written and oral English language skills
● High interest to publish and present the outcome of this study
Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in Germany (TV-H E 13, 65%). The contract
should start as soon as possible (preferably 1st May 2015) and will be restricted to three years. The
