A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents:
I hope your children have a great weekend and take some time to enjoy the long weekend after
exams finish up today. Here is a review of the upcoming schedule for your information:
Monday, January 20: MLK, Jr Day. Holiday. No School.
Tuesday, January 21: Teacher Workday. No School.
Wednesday, January 22: Make-Up Exam day. This day is for students who need
to take a make -up exam in any class.
Thursday, January 23: 1st Day of 2nd Semester. Students report directly to
homeroom for a short time and then they will follow a regular schedule through all of
their classes.
We are very thankful for our parent proctors who helped us administer state testing this
week! We couldn't have had a smooth week without your help!

New - Barnes & Noble Book Fair
Pick up your required reading for second semester!
Barnes and Noble is hosting a Book Fair to support academics at Providence High School. For
one week, a percentage of all your purchases (in store or online) will be directed to the school. All
you need to do is present the voucher at the time of purchase. The Book Fair runs from January
23rd - January 30th. Vouchers are available on Ms. Hutchinson's wiki

Attention Seniors! 2014 PHS PTSO Scholarship Application Deadline on
March 7!
Every year the PHS PTSO awards five $1,000 scholarships to PHS Seniors who exemplify
excellence in academics, character, leadership and community service.
Applicants MUST be a member of the PTSO and must submit the completed application form, an
essay, a resume and a letter of recommendation by March 7, 2014. Please pick up an
Application Packet in the Counseling Office for complete instructions.

Presidential Volunteer Service Awards
Did you volunteer during the Winter Break? Keep in mind that there is still time to meet the
requirements to earn the Presidential Volunteer Service Award! The PVSA program recognizes
community service and offers three award levels.
Bronze level:
100 or more service hours; 50 or more for volunteers ages 14 and under.
Silver Level:
175-249 service hours; 75-99 for volunteers ages 14 and under.
Gold Level:
250 or more services hours; 100 hours for volunteers ages 14 and under.
You have until March 14, 2014 to earn hours but RULES FOR SUBMISSION HAVE CHANGED!!

New - Attention Parents of Rising Seniors-Save the Date!
Senior portrait days will be held June 23rd to June 26th in the school auditorium. Your student
will have the opportunity to select a summer appoint time during lunches on April 28-30.
Otherwise, be looking for postcards to be mailed home this summer with your student's
appointment information. Please be sure to keep the school up to date with any address changes.

Ink/Toner Cartridge Recycling
Band Boosters collects used Ink and Toner Cartridges. Help the environment and support Band
Boosters by dropping off your cartridges in the band room. Ask your employers if they recycle ink
or toner. If not, bring them to us and we will recycle them for you! We take all brands and styles

Winter Guard Fundraiser!

Fill Dirt & Bricklayer Needed
Got Dirt? We are looking for fill dirt to level the area for the new “Panther Plaza” in preparation to
start laying the bricks that have been ordered and received. We also need a bricklayer to set the

New - Featured Scholarships:
North Carolina Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarships
Three (3) $2,000 one year non-renewable scholarships open to seniors that are interested
in teaching as their future career choice. Please see student services for an application. All
application materials are due into student services by January 31, 2014.
Georgia Tech Alumni Scholarships
Each year the Charlotte Alumni Chapter offers several scholarships that range from
$1,000 to $5,000. The application can be found at

National Multiple Sclerosis Society National Scholarship Program
This is a program offered each year to help students who’ve been diagnosed with MS or have a
parent with MS achieve their dreams of going to college. For additional information and to apply

Summer Opportunities
UnionPower Cooperative is offering three NC High School Juniors an all-expense paid trip to D.C.
to meet with Congressional representatives, visit historical sites, and learn about government and
cooperatives. The Youth Tour will be June 14-20. For more information and to apply, visit

Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics is a cost-free, state-funded program for
academically talented North Carolina residents who have demonstrated interest in science and
mathematics and aspire to a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering and
mathematics). The program brings rising juniors and seniors together in a residential setting for

The Bank of America Student Leaders Program
The Bank of America Student Leaders Program recognizes current juniors and seniors who step
outside of the classroom to lead and serve in their own communities and beyond. Students can

Work as a paid intern at a local nonprofit for eight weeks
Attend the weeklong all expense paid Student Leadership Summit in Washington, DC
Develop leadership and career skills
Connect with community-minded students from our own community and across the country

YBM (Young Black Male) Leadership Alliance Seeking Top High School
Juniors
THE TOP 100 YOUNG BLACK Male LEADERSHIP PROGRAM is designed to recognize African
American male high school seniors for their exemplary achievements in academic, community
service, leadership and volunteer efforts. Students who participate in the program are highlighted
in the Top 100 publication, recognized at a city-wide ceremony and have the opportunity to
compete for YBM Leadership Alliance scholarships. Visit www.ybmleadership.com/top100 for
more information. Registration is open to African-American Juniors with a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Cheerleading – For information about Cheerleading, please refer to the Cheerleading tab on the

Football – The Annual Football Banquet will be held Monday, January 27, 2014.
Men’s Golf – There will be an Interest Meeting for Men’s Golf on Friday, January 24,
immediately after school in Coach Church’s Room (Room 224). Please contact Coach Church

Men’s Lacrosse – A volunteer meeting for parents will be held on Tuesday, January 21, at 7
PM. Please contact John Brady at (704) 953-3099 or [email protected] for additional
information. Team dues and Student Athletic Forms are due by Friday, January 31. Forms are
available on the Athletic website by selecting the following link:

should be returned to the front office. Please indicate Men’s Lacrosse and the player’s name on
the outside of the envelope. Information on Team Packs and Spirit Wear will be sent out later in

Women’s Lacrosse – PHS Woman’s LAX – Captains’ Practices have started. It’s not too late
to join in! Captains’ practices will run every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 2:30 PM
for about an hour. Players need to meet at the practice field behind the PHS student parking
lot with their gear (sticks, eye protection, mouth guard and water). Captains’ practices will run
until official practices begin in mid-February (except for Holiday Break). Conditioning will run
every Monday and Wednesday after school from 2:30 PM for about 75 minutes. Players do
not need to bring their lacrosse gear but do need to wear running shoes and appropriate clothing
for running and exercising outdoors. And bring water!! Like Captains’ Practices, Conditioning will
run until official practices begin in mid-February (except for Holiday Break). Captains Practices
and Conditioning are what builds the foundation for a successful season!! For more information

Panther Rugby – The Providence Rugby Club begins the defense of their 2013 undefeated
conference championship. Practice will be every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:306:30 PM and Saturday from 10 AM – 2 PM. For more details about our club, check out our

Women's Soccer – Women's soccer workouts will pick back up on Monday, January 27. As
always, bring cleats AND running shoes. Fitness tests will be on Monday and Tuesday,
February 10 and 11. Tryouts will be on Wednesday, February 12. Again have running shoes
and cleats during tryouts also. If you have any questions, please email Coach Long at

Softball – There will be no softball workouts, Monday, January 20, Tuesday, January 21, or
Wednesday, January 22. There will be a workout on Thursday, January 23. If you are
planning to try out for Softball you should make every effort to attend; it is not required at this time
but highly suggested. Workouts will also be Monday, January 27 -Thursday, January 30.
Coach Schundlemire will post where we will meet for workouts outside his office at 2:15 PM. If

Winter Track & Field – The following student athletes have qualified for the NCHSAA 4A Indoor
Track and Field State Championships to be held on Saturday, February 8, in Winston-Salem Matt Jeiger: Triple Jump, Wyatt Maxey: 1000m & 1600m, Daniel Kim: 55mHH, Bianca Bishop:

ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB INFORMATION
Athletic Booster Season Pass Update – Attention Basketball, Wrestling, Swimming and Winter
Track families and fans! It’s time to purchase your Athletic Season Passes! Passes may be
purchased by contacting Maytee Sanz at [email protected] or (980) 339-9106. You may
also pick up a form in the front office. The Student Pass provides a low cost option ($50) for
every student at Providence to attend all season home games, cheer friends and support their
teams. The PSL (Personal and Corporate), Family and Individual Memberships provide access to
all PHS regular season games for ALL SPORTS. Please join the Athletic Booster Club and
select your season pass. Your membership benefits all athletes and teams. For complete details

Athletic Booster Club Meetings - The next Athletic Booster Club meeting will be on Monday,
February 3, at 6:30 PM in the classroom across from the office. Subsequent meetings will be
held the 1st Monday of each month at 6:30 PM. We invite everyone to attend and join us in
