Welcome to the Church of Saint Agnes
Three Year Anniversary of the New Translation of the
Mass - Creed
Was born of the Virgin Mary is now Was incarnate
of the Virgin Mary.
As we continue our review of the significant changes for the
new translation of the Mass we now come to the Creed. I will
not cover every word change but only the most important.
Here we have another choice of an English word that more
directly corresponds to the original Latin, incarnatus. In the
words of John's Gospel we hear that, "the Word became
flesh" (John 1:14). The Catechism of the Catholic Church,
paragraph 461, explains that the theological term incarnate
refers to "the fact that the son of God assumed a human nature in order to accomplish our salvation in it.” The Son of
God was born of the Virgin Mary and he actually took on
human flesh, not just the appearance of being human.
One of the most obvious differences is the change from the
first person plural “We” to the more accurate first person
singular “I”. The new translation reflects the Latin Credo, “I
believe”. What is so significant about the change from “We”
to “I” is the simple fact that the ascent of faith is always done
first and foremost in an individual and personal fashion.
Your parents or your spouse cannot believe for you. We
only believe as a group because each one of us has been
given the gift of faith and cooperates with it, personally. During the Easter Season we are reminded of our baptismal
vows and are asked individually by the priest, “Do you believe in God the Father Almighty…? And the answer is, "I
do.”
All that is seen and unseen has now been changed to all
things visible and invisible. At first glance this might not
appear to be that significant of a change. However, there is a
very great difference between what is unseen and what is
invisible. Unseen could somehow be misinterpreted to include only material and quantifiable objects that are not presently being witnessed in some way. Whereas, what is invisible clearly includes those philosophical and theological concepts that are all too often denied in the modern world,
namely, spiritual entities such as the soul and grace. Just because something cannot be seen or measured does not mean
that it does not exist. The greatest of the non-physical beings
is, of course, Almighty God.
One in Being with the Father is now translated consubstantial with the Father. The word consubstantial is almost a direct rendering of the Latin consubstantialem. The new translation shows how philosophical concepts are proximate to the
faith and how they are in service of theology. Consubstantial
literally means “with the substance”. The word substance, in
turn, is understood as that which stands under. What is
meant by this is the essence and nature of a being or what
kind of a being it is. This concept helps us to separate what
is merely accidental versus what is a part of the unchangeable aspect of a thing. In regards to humans we have many
differences in respect to accidentals; however, we share the
same nature, rational animals. God, on the other hand, does
not have accidental differences because he is not just one-of-a
-kind he is the being whose being and essence is one and the
same. This apparently slight change in the translation helps
to reinforce the unity of nature between God the Father and
God the Son. It also validates the importance of good philosophical distinctions.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Mark Moriarty
