ZARAGOZA CONFERENCE: Water and
Sustainable Development: From Vision to Action
RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT PLANNING
2015-2021: NORTH WEST TRANSITIONAL
AND COASTAL WATERS WORKSHOP
Zaragoza, Spain
Environment Centre, Lancaster Univeristy
This conference is organised by UN-Water Decade Programme on
Advocacy and Communication (UNW-DPAC). Participants from
UN agencies and programmes, experts, representatives from
business communities, governmental and non-governmental
organizations will meet to discuss the steps towards a sustainable
post-2015 agenda. The Conference will deal with some of the
main implementation challenges related to the five main targets
recommended by the UN-Water synthesis document on a Global
Goal for Water “Securing sustainable water for all”.
A key issue in the North West is high/increasing levels of
phytoplankton and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in the
transitional and coastal waters that enter the Irish Sea. As part
of the consultation on the draft River Basin Management Plan
(RBMP) the Environment Agency is holding this workshop with
three main aims: to present the issues with Phytoplankton and
DIN reported in the draft RBMP; to discuss the issues with a
wide variety of individuals and groups, to help better understand
what might be driving nutrient inputs and cycling and what
the consequences might be; to seek views and suggestions on
potential measures and actions for the 2015-2021 RBMP and in
the longer term.

Since the establishment of the IWA Asia Pacific Regional
Grouping (IWA-ASPIRE) in 2004, it has played an important
role in promoting communications and collaborations within
the Asia-Pacific region. With the main theme of “Sustainable
Water Environment and Water Use”, this conference will provide
a platform to discuss the complex and diversified situation of
water and environment in China, and in the Asia Pacific Region
as well.
This biennial event organised by the International Water
Association focuses on the development and delivery of water
and sanitation solutions in the developing countries. With its
focus on solutions, the Development Congress aims to change
the conventional narrative for water resource management
and water and sanitation services in low and middle income

The conference will focus on the latest advances in experimental,
theoretical, and computational tools in the field of fluvial
hydraulics. Participants will consider how these tools can be used
to expand our understanding and capacity to predict flow and
the associated fluid-driven ecological processes, anthropogenic
influences (e.g., heat, dissolved and suspended organic/inorganic
material), sediment transport, and morphodynamic processes.
The main conference sponsor is the International Association of
Hydraulic Research (IAHR).

The International Symposium on River Sedimentation is
organised by the University of Stuttgart and will provide a forum
for scientists, engineers and policy-makers to share information,
exchange ideas and collaborate in the field of erosion and
sedimentation processes. Themes include: sediment sources;
sediment transport in rivers and lakes; geomorphology
meets ecology; sedimentation processes; erosion processes;
morphology and water quality; how to address sediment
dynamics better; innovative management strategies; social,
economic and political aspects of sediment management.
