I believe the government should establish a national minimum wage. From a moral point
of view, this is the right thing to do. I agree with President Roosevelt, quoted by D.
Saint-Paix (paragraph 2), who said, "No business which depends for existence on paying less
than living wages to its workers has any right to continue." However, a national minimum
wage would also bring practical benefits for both the economy and for companies. If there
were such a wage, more people would be encouraged to work instead of depending on social
welfare. There would be less drug use and less crime, which are closely connected to
unemployment. The government would spend less money on policing. Also, if workers earned
more money, consumption would increase. The government would be able to collect more tax.
Employers, too, would benefit. Workers who are paid a decent living wage do better work and
stay longer.

I do not believe the government should abolish the inheritance tax. Certainly, as Lou
Sitall says in paragraph 4 of "Taxed to Death? The Estate Tax Reconsidered?" (2015), the tax
can be a "cause of the nation's loss of historic treasures." The lands and homes of many
wealthy families have had to be divided and sold to pay it. As a result, there are few green
spaces in cities like Tokyo and Yokohama and important buildings that could teach us about
our past have been lost. However, getting rid of this tax would lead to greater social inequality
and then to unrest. Most people feel it is unfair if the children of the rich inherit all of the
wealth of their parents because they have not worked for it. The public would not support
governments that appeared to care more about the wealthy few than ordinary citizens.
