The purpose of the Bachelor’s Program in Global Issues, BPGI, is to provide students with basic knowledge and techniques to resolve global issues related to environmental matters and human beings. Graduates of this program can make decision and select an optimal solution across disciplines.

Limited to those who have a nationality of non-Japanese in 2017.
地球規模課題学位プログラム（学士）では、地球規模課題全般を俯瞰する幅広い基礎知識を身に付け、環境と人間に関
する特定の課題を解決するために分野を超えて必要な情報・技術を自ら意欲的に求めていく姿勢をもち、多くの選択肢
の中から最適解を意思決定できる人材を養成します。
本プログラムは 4 年間の英語プログラムです※。
※2017 年度は外国籍を有する者を対象。

At this time of globalization, we have to confront complex issues, achieve harmony between earth environment and human beings and find common grounds to
create the future. BPGI trains students in decision making, critical thinking and
problem solving to imagine the future and take action with a large variety of people from different backgrounds.
グローバル化時代において人類が直面する複雑な難問に立ち向かい、地球環境と人間社会の調
和を実現し、未来を創る共通の基盤を確立する必要があります。そのため、自己の意思と能力
を深め、自らが身をおく世界の有り様を認識し、変革すべき未来へのビジョンを構想し、多様
な人々と協働しつつ行動することのできる人材を養成します。
What are Global Issues ?
地球規模課題（Global Issue）とは？
Global Issue stands for complex contemporary issues, which are related to the entire globe. These issues
are intertwined with various stakeholders and phenomena, and therefore, it is not easy to solve them by
using a traditional approach. Global Issues can be seen in our daily lives, and we must try to find a solution from our daily lives. For example, even a piece of bread that you have had for breakfast could highlight issues like the significant cost of energy used to import wheat, the wage and human rights issues
of people engaged in production and transportation, mass disposal, and biased food distribution in the

に従事する人の賃金や人権問題、さらに大量廃棄と世界の食料分配の偏りといった問題が浮かび上がってきます。

What can you learn ／

You can learn about the literacy in global issues, which means that you can learn what global issues are and how
you can resolve them from the perspectives of “Environment” and “Human”. The “Environment” fields are divided into “Global Environment” and “Risk and Security” issues. On the other hand, the “Human” fields are divided
into “Human Health and Wellbeing” and “Social Diversity and Inclusiveness” issues. You will acquire knowledge
on these four issues comprehensively and can develop specialties with your own interests.

The BPGI courses are not in the
form of traditional one-way lectures. Instead, we engage in interactive classes where students and
teachers collectively assess real-life
issues. The PBL approach is specifically used in imparting General
Introduction to Global Issues, Methodology for Global Issues, Literacy
in Global Issues (Environment), and
Literacy in Global Issues (Human) in
the first year; and Seminars and
Practical Training on Global Issues
in the second to the fourth year.
In the first year, during the Spring
Semester students take the courses
at ICU. The University of Tsukuba
has started a “Campus-with-Campus” scheme with ICU with the aim
to facilitate transborder education
and research by sharing campus
functions. As part of this scheme,
BPGI will also utilize the abundant
resources of liberal arts education
at ICU for the development of the
students.

Global issues are complexly intertwined with various elements, and
are difficult to be solved with only
traditional expertise. In this program, through a uniquely designed
curriculum,
students
acquire
knowledge, attitudes, and methodology necessary to resolve these
issues by using a new approach.

International Christian University (ICU) is a leading liberal arts university of Japan,
located in Mitaka, Tokyo.
Along with its focus on bilingual education to realize its international mission, ICU
offers courses across thirty-one majors taught in Japanese and English. Its faculty
members and students are from diverse backgrounds.
Our university and ICU signed an inter-university partnership agreement in 2016,
calling it as a “Campus-with-Campus” initiative. With this agreement, our university and ICU will work together to promote personal growth of each student by
sharing campus functions, utilizing each other’s resources and strengths.

Learn about the complexity, dimensions, and depth of global issues that cannot be solved from the perspective of
only a single discipline.
Learn about the efforts of each country in the international community, in corporate strategies, in the United Nations system, etc. by developing a global perspective.

Learn about methods and gain transferable skills necessary to tackle global issues. Learn about career development

You acquire a specialized knowledge necessary to address global issues. Guidance in selection of courses is provided
so that each you can acquire not only a general knowledge that everyone should acquire, but also acquire a specialized knowledge based on their interest, which can be central to their career selection in future.

To demonstrate leadership in addressing the global issues in the society after graduation, we provide practical training in the PBL approach. For example, you conduct surveys on the environments and stakeholders in the fields facing
global issues and participate in the discussions on the global issues, imitating a UN conference.
卒業後に社会で地球規模課題に取り組む戦力となれるよう、PBL 形式で実践的なトレーニングを行います。具体的には、地球規模課題に直面しているフィー
ルドでの環境やステークホルダーに関する調査、国連を模した地球規模課題に関する議論等を行います。
Graduation Research or Internship 卒業研究またはインターンシップ
As a compilation of what you have learned in the four years, you engage in a graduation research or internships
(long-term practical training) in order to prove that you have acquired the ability to identify an issue and find a solution to it on your own. In consultation with BPGI team members, you can choose topics freely, considering how you
want to address the global issues in the future.
４年間で学んだ集大成として、自信で課題を発見し、解決策を見出せる力を身につけたことを証明するため、卒業研究またはインターンシップ（長期実習）に

Tuition exemption
The students taking admission in the Bachelor’ s Degree Program in Global Issues of 2017 are exempted from paying half the tuition fee.
(Regular admission fee and tuition fee)
●Admission fee: 282,000 yen
●October to March: Tuition fee: 267,900 yen
●April to September Tuition fee: 267,900 yen
Student Residence Halls
Accommodation in the student residence hall is available if desired. If a student taking admission in the Bachelor’ s Degree Program in
Global Issues of 2017 wishes to reside in a student dormitory, he or she will live in the Global Village, which will become operational
in April 2017. The monthly rent is 35,800 Yen, and the residents have to pay monthly utility fees.
Tutorial system
To ensure that the international students, who have never lived in Japan before, live and study in comfort, tutors are available to
provide individual support for a certain number of hours.

Outline of University of Tsukuba
筑波大学の概要
／
Outline of University of Tsukuba
Our university’s history dates back to its founding as Japan’s first normal school in 1872. It became the Tokyo University of Education in 1949 and took its current name in 1973, with “A university open to all within and outside
in Japan” as the university’s concept.
Professor Jigoro Kano headed the University of Tsukuba’s forerunner, Tokyo Higher Normal School for a total of
25 years from 1893 with “mutual welfare and benefit” and “maximum efficiency with minimum effort” as his
mottoes. He pursued personal training through judo, improved scholastic education in Japan, promoted the admission of international students and the development of athletic sports in Japan. He provided guidelines not just
for our university but also on the types of students universities should strive for and ways to train them, as well as
contemplating Japan’s global role.
Our university is one of the rare universities worldwide that has produced both Nobel Prize and Olympic gold medal winners. The three Nobel Prize recipients—two for physics and one for chemistry—were Professor Sin-ltiro Tomonaga (a former Tokyo University of Education president (the University of Tsukuba’s forerunner)), Professor Leo
Esaki (a former University of Tsukuba president), and Professor Hideki Shirakawa (a professor emeritus of the University). In the Olympic Games, Sawao Kato (a professor emeritus of the University) won twelve Olympic medals
including eight gold medals between 1968 and 1976 in artistic gymnastics. In recent years, Ayumi Tanimoto won
gold medals in Judo at two consecutive Olympics. Those associated with Tsukuba have won a total of sixty-three
medals at the Olympics.
The University of Tsukuba will continue to respond to our changing modern society, promoting the development
of new educational and research capabilities and management organizations that possess a richly international
sensibility as well as diversity and flexibility.
