Ph.D. Research Grant Announcement 2017
-- Call for Applications -The Orient-Institut Istanbul is pleased to invite applications for Ph.D. research grants for 2017 and
for the academic year of 2017/18. The purpose of the grant is the support of field research in Turkey,
which is necessary for the dissertation project. Ph.D. students whose dissertation projects are related
to manuscript studies are particularly encouraged to apply. Grants are available to support research
in one of the research areas of the institute including the following research fields:
1. Musicological research on the Ottoman Empire and Turkey
2. Narrative sources on Istanbul and the late Ottoman Empire
3. Historic and contemporary forms of religious expression in Anatolia since the 11th
century
4. Manuscript culture in the Ottoman Empire and Iran, in cooperation with the
Collaborative Research Center 950 of the University of Hamburg
5. Human, medicine, and society; in cooperation with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology
(ITAS)
The award consists of a monthly stipend of € 1,100 for the duration of usually six months. Travel
expenses to and from Turkey will be reimbursed.
Prospective applicants are expected to hold an M.A. degree in a related academic discipline. A
complete application must specify the necessity of conducting research in Istanbul or elsewhere in
Turkey and include a detailed time frame for the envisioned research.
A good command of Turkish or other source languages necessary for the proposed project is
expected. As the Orient-Institut Istanbul aims at creating an open and supportive academic
environment, stipend holders are expected to attend colloquia and conferences organized by the
institute and to give a public presentation of their research. Research stays outside of Istanbul must
be coordinated with the director.

Das Orient-Institut Istanbul vergibt für 2017 sowie für das akademische Jahr 2017-18 Stipendien
zur Förderung der Promotion. Die Stipendien dienen der Finanzierung eines Forschungsaufenthalts
in der Türkei. Berücksichtigt werden Promotionsprojekte, die sich mit den hier genannten
Themenschwerpunkten oder einem der weiteren Forschungsbereiche des Orient-Instituts Istanbul
befassen:
1) Musikwissenschaftliche Forschung zum Osmanischen Reich und der Türkei
2) Narrative Quellen zu Istanbul und dem spätosmanischen Reich
3) Ausdrucksformen, Geschichte und Gegenwart der Religionen Anatoliens (ab dem 11. Jh.)
4) Manuskriptkultur im Osmanischen Reich und Iran in Kooperation mit dem SFB 950 an
der Universität Hamburg
5) Mensch, Medizin und Gesellschaft in Kooperation mit dem ITAS am Karlsruher Institut
für Technologie
Das Stipendium beträgt monatlich € 1.100 für einen Zeitraum von in der Regel sechs Monaten.
Die Kosten der An- und Abreise in die Türkei werden erstattet.
Voraussetzung für die Bewerbung ist ein abgeschlossenes Hochschulstudium (Master/Magister,
Diplom) in einem für das jeweilige Ausschreibungsthema einschlägigen Fach. Aus der Bewerbung,
die einen ausgearbeiteten Zeitplan umfassen soll, muss die wissenschaftliche Notwendigkeit eines

Aufenthalts in Istanbul bzw. der Türkei hervorgehen. Gute Kenntnisse im Türkischen bzw. einer
anderen einschlägigen Quellensprache werden vorausgesetzt. Das Orient-Institut Istanbul strebt
einen offenen und konstruktiven wissenschaftlichen Austausch unter den Institutsangehörigen und
mit externen Wissenschaftlern an. Daher wird von den Stipendiatinnen und Stipendiaten die
Teilnahme an Kolloquien und anderen Institutsveranstaltungen vorausgesetzt, sowie eine öffentliche
Vorstellung der eigenen Forschungsarbeit am Institut erwartet. Forschungsaufenthalte außerhalb
Istanbuls sind mit der Direktion abzusprechen.
