For those in the Tokyo area, or who may be coming this weekend--a great gathering of scholars based
in Japan, Taiwan, and the US about writer Tsushima Yuko (1947-2016). The keynote speaker is
novelist Kashimada Maki; fans of contemporary literature will recognize other names. Tsushima's
many writings, in Japanese and in translation, stress the powers of narrative to connect intimate
stories of personal/family life to spaces of memory and movement apart from these immediate
intimacies. Tsushima also did numerous collaborations with younger writers with writing "caravans"
in (among other places) Taiwan and India. This is a chance to hear from writers and scholars who
were Tsushima's contemporaries, readers and collaborators. A selected edition of her works is in the
works, which will bring many writings together and into readers' hands. Please join us~ even if you
have a lingering conference fatigue from the Soseki gathering.
The symposium is happening at Shirayuri University in Chofu (where Tsushima went to college), on
Sunday December 11. Links are below, with transit directions. Registration is desired, but not
required. (Talks will be in Japanese).
