KONF: International Conference "Spectators in Europe" im
Haus der Universität und im Goethe-Museum Düsseldorf
(09.-11.12.2016)
Discussion published by Misia Doms on Thursday, November 24, 2016
The DFG-funded international conference "Spectators in Europe/Wochenschriften in Europa"
(Düsseldorf, 09.-11.12.3016) organized by Jun.Prof. Misia Sophia Doms (Institute of German Studies,
Heinrich-Heine-University of Düsseldorf) will outline the genesis, development, and long-term effect
of the moral weeklies or Spectator-type magazines from Eastern, Western, Nothern and Southern
Europe on European culture. Spectator experts will explore the local, regional, national and transEuropean characteristics of different Spectator magazines from the Habsburgian area, from
Denmark, France, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and Russia as well as other European
(and even non-European) countries and they will study the Spectators' impact on literature (genres,
writing modes, communication between authors and readers …) and journalism as well as their role
in the spreading of enlightened ideas.
