Elucidation of Chain Trajectory and Chemical
Reactions of Semicrystalline Polymers
by Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy
Abstract
Prof.

of Akron, United States
Solid-state(ss)-NMR spectroscopy is one of very powerful tools to
characterize local structures and molecular dynamics of organic molecules. In
this talk, I will present two research topics of i) chain trajectory of
semicrystalline polymers and ii) chemical reactions of Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)
for carbon fiber. In both topics, there have been long-standing researches over
the half century. However, we still do not have clear conclusions in both issues
due to experimental limitations. To solve these problems, higher spectral and
spatial resolutions are definitively necessary. Recently, we developed 13C-13C
double quantum (DQ) NMR spectroscopy combined with 13C selective isotope
labeling to investigate detailed chain trajectory of semicrystalline polymers. I
will demonstrate how our technique accesses chain folding and unfolding of
semicrystalline polymers. On the basis of molecular level structure,
chain-folding mechanisms of long polymer chains will be discussed. Similar
idea came up to solve chemical reactions. I will demonstrate how ssNMR
approach distinguishes intramolecular reactions from intermolecular reactions
in the solid phase and quantitatively analyze their reaction kinetics.
