Die Titelseite des Gemeindebriefes zeigt ein Fensterbild der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche in
Swakopmund. Die Kirche wurde 1912 geweiht. Sie
wurde mit Hilfe eines Architekten aus Bayern, einer
Baufirma in Hamburg und einer Fensterfirma in
Bremen errichtet.
Das Ostfenster stellt das Gespräch Jesu mit Martha
dar.

Dear Congregation
Ons spreuk vir Oktober staan in 2.Kor 3,17:
Daar waar die Gees van die Here is, daar is ook vryheid.
As 'n mens 'n bietjie rondvra by ander mense om te hoor wat vryheid
vir hulle beteken, dan sal daar seker so veel antwoorde as mense
wees. Vir 'n student is dit dalk om branderplank te kan ry elke oomblik
van die lewe. 'n Tiener sal vryheid dalk beskryf as die reg om haar eie
haarstyl te kies. 'n Ander sal weer verduidelik dat dit die reg is om sy
stemreg uit te oefen en om geregeer te word deur 'n demokraties
verkose regering. Of om geskei te wees van 'n nare eggenoot.
Luister ons nou na wat dit vir Paulus beteken om vry te wees: Vir hom
is Vryheid om deur die Gees van God gelei te wees, sodat 'n mens nie
meer deur godsdienstige wette beheer word nie. Dis te verstaan teen
die agtergrond van 'n legalistiese godsdiens, waarvan hy eens 'n felle
aanhanger was. 'n Eindelose getal reëls en wette het bepaal op watter
manier hy God kon en moes dien en gehoorsaam. Totdat hy die opgestane Jesus op die pad na Damaskus ontmoet het, en tot die besef
gekom het dat die Lewende God nie in wette en reëls te vinde is nie,
maar in 'n lewendige ontmoeting met Jesus Christus. En die Christus
het aan ons sy Heilige Gees gegee, sodat ons verder, sonder die wette
en reëls, maar onder die Gees se leiding, ons geloof mag lewe. In die
krag van die waarheid en geregtigheid, wat spruit uit die Evangelie van
Jesus Christus.
Wette kan altyd verdraai of omseil word, want daar sal altyd skuiwergate te vinde wees. Die Gees en Sy vryheid is oral en sal ons nooit
verlaat of versaak nie.

Unser Monatsspruch von November kommt aus 2.Petr 1,19:
Umso fester haben wir das prophetische Wort, und ihr tut gut
daran, dass ihr darauf achtet als auf ein Licht, das da scheint
an einem dunklen Ort, bis der Tag anbreche und der Morgenstern aufgehe in euren Herzen.
Irgendwo habe ich gelesen, dass in einer ganz dunklen Nacht, ohne
Mond oder Sterne, ein Kerzenlicht über einen Abstand von einem Kilometer gesehen werden kann! Fast unglaublich, aber doch wahr. So
gross ist die Kraft eines kleinen Lichtes, die Dunkelheit zu durchdringen.
Physikalisch ist das kleine Licht noch wunderbarer: denn jeder dieser
kleinen Lichstrahlen reist gegen konstanter (unvorstellbar hoher)
Geschwindigkeit, sogar durch den ganzen Kosmos. Erreicht das Licht
eines fernen Sternes mein Auge, dürfte dies schon etliche (hunderte)
Millionen Jahren unterwegs gewesen sein, ohne seine Qualität
eingebüßt zu haben. Vom Rande des Kosmos fällt uns das erste Licht
der Schöpfung noch aufs Auge!
So kommt dann auch das profetische Wort zu uns, aus weiter Distanz
und aus fremden Orten. Manches profetische Wort erzählt uns noch
von diesem weitentfernten Schöpfungsereignis mit den Glaubensworten
der ehrfürchtigen Weisen und Gläubigen des Levants (mittleren Orients)
vor tausenden von Jahren. Andere profetische Worte erzählen uns von
Ereignissen vor zweitausend Jahren, von Kometen und dem wunderbaren Ereigniss der Geburt eines Kindes, von Sonnenfinsternissen
und Kreuzigung, von Erdbeben und geöffneten, aber leeren Gräbern.
Auf diese und ander prophetischen Worte haben wir Acht zu schlagen:
Sie sind das Licht, das da scheint am dunklen Ort. Wir beachten diese
prophetischen Worte, bis der Tag anbricht und der Morgenstern aufgeht
in unseren Herzen, und diese Welt und die ganze Schöpfung zu Ende
geht (auch ein solch prophetisches Wort!) und Gottes ewiges Reich und
Herrschaft über alle und in allem regiert. Und, sagt uns das prophetische Wort, dort werden wir das grosse Fest mit dem Herrn und
Schöpfer dieser Welt feiern.

Chorabend im St Johannis Heim
am Freitag, dem 9. September 2016
“Wo man singt, da laß dich ruhig nieder;
Böse Menschen haben keine Lieder!”
Mit diesem Spruch wurden die Sänger und Zuhörer zu einem festlichen
Chorabend in unserm Aufenthaltsraum begrüßt. Es wirkten zwei Männerchöre mit: der Tygerberg Männerchor und der Männergesangverein
von Swakopmund, Namibia, welcher ein ausgewogenes Programm
klangschöner Chorlieder unter der fähigen Leitung von Frau Dörte Witte
brachte. Der Vorsitzende des Vereins, Dr med Rüdiger Moisel,
informierte in humorvoller Art über die Geschichte des Chores
(entstanden 1902) und den Inhalt der gesungenen Lieder. Besonders
gefallen hat der klassische Männerchorsatz “Aus der Traube, in die
Tonne”, gut und spritzig gesungen! Auch “Kan ‘n man dan nie” auf Afrikaans ist sehr gut angekommen. Der altbekannte Schlager “Schön war
die Zeit” brachte einige unerwartete “neue” Wendungen, die an die
Commedian Harmonists und Freddy Mercury erinnerten.
Die Einwohnerinnen und Einwohner unseres St Johannis Heimes zeigten sich durch den übervoll besetzten Saal dankbar für das Programm,
auch mit rauschendem Applaus nach jedem Stück. In seiner Begrüßung
sprach Herr Sachse den Dank und die Würdigung aus, daß der Männergesangverein Swakopmund es trotz seines vollen Programms ermöglicht hat in unserm Aufenthaltsraum für uns aufzutreten. Der
Abend klang gelockert aus bei einer Käseplatte und Wein.
“Was uns eint im fernen Land, was uns hält, ein festes Band,
heilig durch die Seele zieht, das ist unser deutsches Lied.”

Pastor’s Communication to the Congregation
October / November 2016

Dear Congregation,
The Missional Work Group met on 20 August and read various
Scriptures related to Hebrews 13, 2: Do not forget to show hospitality
to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to
angels without knowing it. http://bibles.org/eng-NIV/Heb/13 (Also:
Genesis 18, 1-7 +19,1-3; Leviticus 19, 18 +34; Mt 19, 17-19).
A Seminar/workshop exploring “Emotions and Feelings” was held
Saturday morning, 13 August, with some 10 people attending.
St Johannisheim Management Committee: Pastor Peter was
coopted on the 19th of August with immediate effect.
Office Manager of Kreuzkirche: The Church Committee at its meeting on the 17.8.16 decided that Pastor Peter would be the official
Manager of the Church Office. This post has previous been held by
Elisabeth Kliem in her former capacity as Chair of Church Committee.
As the present Church Committee members are for the most part fully
employed, it was decided that Pst Peter would in future fulfill this role.
He will (usually) be at the office Tuesday till Thursday from 9:0012:30.
Renewal of Contract with Pst Peter: The Church Committee is in
negotiations with Bishop Gilbert Filter with a view to renewing the
service contract. Any final agreement would then have to be confirmed
by the congregation at the SGM on the 6.11.2016 (10:15 am).
CCW met for a discussion on the future of the Church (Vasco,
27th August):
1. Future of Bainskloof resolution (30.7.2016): The Church Council
was requested to manage Bainskloof in future as the CCW is unable to
gather a functional Management Committee.
2. Bishop on Church Unity talks: It was decided by the Church
councils of the Cape Church and ELCSA (N/T) to end Unity Talks.
Maximum cooperation between the Churches on all possible levels is to
be continued.

Bazaar 3rd September: We had a wonderful bazaar. The weather and
the atmosphere were great and we made some R95000. Many thanks
to all the helpers and for all the donations!
Bazaar evaluation: 17th September, 10:00. All welcome.
Joint Pastors’ Conference: in PMB from 19-23 September with the
pastors of ELCAS/NT and Cape Church.
Pastor’s leave: will be from 1.10.2016 till 28.10.2016, with approval
from the Church Committee. Pst Felix Meylahn will provide pastoral
services in this time. For all queries please contact the Church Office.
Advent Bazaar preparation meeting: 29.10.16, 9:00. All welcome
Reformation Service: We will celebrate together with the Moravians
and the Cape Orange Diocese Congregations in the Western Cape, on
the 30.10.16 (9:30 for 10:00) at the Strand Street Church. We will
drive together from the Kreuzkirche at 9:00 and provide lifts for those
who want to come along. We don’t want anybody to be left behind!
There will be no service in the Kreuzkirche that Sunday, 30.10.16.
An English Bible Study will commence on Wednesday evening, 2nd
November, 7-8 pm. This will, we hope, become a weekly event,
followed by a time of fellowship for those that have the time.
Special General Meeting on the 6.11.2016 (10:15 am):
Financial Report, budget, contract renewal, general.
Manna and Mercy Workshop on 11th, 12th and 13th November at
NG Church, Kloof Street. Contact Pastor Peter for details.
Missional Work Group: 19 November, 10:00-12:00.
Pastors’s Conference West: Pastors will meet on the 18 October in
Philippi and 22 November in Milnerton (followed by a Bring and Braai),
for their regular meetings.
Adventsbasar, 26 November: at 14:30. All welcome!
German KiGa service: The last one of the year will be held on the 27th
November, 1 Advent, 10:15.
We will celebrate Advent together with the Kraaifontein Congregation
on Sunday afternoon, 4 December, 16.00 in Kraaifontein. We
will travel there together, departing 15:30 from Kreuzkirche.
House visitation or an office appointment: please do not hesitate to
let me or the Church Office (Karin or Christiane) know. Please advise of
congregation members in hospital!

From the Bishop’s Office
News from the Circuit Conferences and Congregations
Circuit Conference East
a. Inland Parish. Vicar Martha Weich has served for a year in the
Strand Street congregation. We thank her for the diligent service
rendered to the community. She starts with her service in the Parish in
October. She lives in Stutterheim. We wish her and the congregations
a blessed journey together.
b. St. Crucis Lutheran Church has celebrated their 150th Anniversary on
4th September. May they continue to be 'salt of the earth' and 'light of
the world'.
c. Luther Brakfontein and St Andrews congregations were visited in
August. They face many challenges due to vast demographic changes
around them, but they continue to serve faithfully as the body of Christ.
Circuit Conference West
a. Pastor Wolf von Killian-Philipp was inducted as Pastor of the
Southern Cape congregation, on 21st August. He will be inducted in the
Oudtshoorn Parish of the ELCSA-COD on 23. October. We wish him and
his wife much joy and a fruitful service in these communities.
b. The congregation Stellenbosch / Somerset Wes was visited from
9-11 September. They are engaged in a Listening Process to discern
how God is calling them to be Church. It is wonderful to see how the
Student Ministry is growing.
Discussions between ELCSA(N-T) and ELCSA(Cape Church)
At the Workshop held from 22-24 July in Strand the following decision
was taken regarding the motions taken at Synod 2015:
"1. After following up on the task assigned by the respective synods
councils came to the following conclusion. We respect and appreciate
each other's uniqueness. After intensive discussions we concluded that
the merger discussions will not be continued at this stage.
2. The Cape Church is busy working at the ecclesiology, to spell out
their identity. This is a deep discernment process of listening to God's
Word and each other; this must also happen on congregational level.
- Who or whose are we?
- What are we called to do?
- How are we going to do it?

3. We affirm that we will continue to engage in close cooperation (let's
do together whatever we can do together) and also learn from and celebrate each other's differences thereby enriching each other."
An opportunity was given to the congregations to discuss the above on
27th August for the CCW at Strand Street and for the CCE on 3 rd September in Macleantown. The above decision will be tabled at the Synod
in 2017.
Pastors' Conference
The Combined General Pastors' Convention of ELCSA(N-T) and ELCSA
(Cape Church) took place from 19-23 September 2016 in Red Acres,
Pietermaritzburg. The following topics were discussed:
a relevant structure for UELCSA (member churches are ELCSA(N-T),
ELCiN(GELC) and ELCSA(Cape Church)); the challenges and contents
of Theological Training; possibilities of better co-operation.
UELCSA (United Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Southern Africa)
The Synod of the UELCSA will take place from 22-23 October in
Bonearo Park. The member churches are ELCSA(NT); ELCiN(GELC) and
ELCSA(CapeChurch).
On the Agenda are the following topics for discussion:
the needs and future of the Theological Training;
Function of UELCSA - a way forward; finances.
Theological Training:
Are you called to become a pastor? Are you interested in studying
theology?
Please speak to your pastor about it. The Church is offering bursaries
to assist prospective full time students. The preferred place of study for
UELCSA students is the Stellenbosch University.
LUCSA - Lutheran Communion in Southern Africa
15 Lutheran churches from Southern Africa gathered in Gauteng from
1-4 September. It was very encouraging to hear what is happening in
and through the Lutheran Church in the region. Bishop H Müller was
elected as President of LUCSA. Bishop G Filter and Mrs L Burger
from Stutterheim, where elected as officers.
