Individual Highlights: 1. Thoughts We This month our focus is on “Responsibility”. The online dictionary defines responsibility as “the state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone; the opportunity or ability to act independently and make decisions without authorization. We want our children to be responsible. An article from Duke University (http://tip.duke.edu/node/7 45) It says that all children need opportunities to demonstrate they are responsible. The act of responsibility involves being trusted, making decisions, and answering for one’s behavior. A good3. way for children to learn responsibility is to be assigned chores. These should be opportunities to help and have rules of consequence. Provide positive feedback that is encouraging, correct when needed, be clear on expectations and the details of their chores, and remember it is okay to assist them when needed but do NOT do the chore for them. Thoughts We Have Received From Grand Master Buell Be loyal. We all have a story that includes people and places. Always be loyal to those who made you who you are. This includes your parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, and extended family, where you were born and other places you have lived, as well as places you have visited. You also have a story with Universal Kempo Karate Schools Association. Be loyal to Grand Master by giving him credit for building such a successful selfdefense program that not only benefits those of us who train but all we come in contact with. Be loyal to your instructor(s) for sharing their knowledge, time and effort with you to help you learn and grow. Be loyal to your kempo family that takes in all students in the Universal Kempo system. Demonstrate your loyalty by defending those to whom you are loyal from gossip and degrading comments, and supporting them in their mission to become better so they can help you become better. Just like respect, if you are loyal, others will be loyal to you. How Can I Improve My Skills Practice, Practice, Perfect Practice If something is worth learning, it is worth learning well. There is not enough time in class to practice each skill/defense/form to reach the point of ‘automaticity’ (allowing it to become an automatic action). Learn in training then take skills? Practice, practice, what was learned and perfect practice. practice at home. Practice with spirit. Practice with as much preciseness as possible. Practice with focus. Practice to reach automaticity. This is perfect practice. How can I improve my What’s Ahead Universal Seminar in Hawaii July 31, August 1, 2, 3. Information can be found at www.falconkidskarate.com website.
