10 times happy hunting
10th edition
When the 10th editon of CFMOTO-HUNT-THE-WOLF,
the world’s most challening ATV-Quad-SSV race, was over
this year, emotions were high. Just look at the image to the
left: organizer Oliver and pilot George full of joy! First one,
because the race was finally over :) and no serious accident
happened, second one because he was the only CFMOTO
pilot starting AND ending the EXTREME class. Experience
the joy of the others on the following pages!
And be ready for next year’s edition!
11th edition
In 2017 the event will take place in a new location, some
50 km away from the old one, offering completely new
tracks and landscape. Again there will be 4 classes: Extreme
for the crazy ones, Crossover for the experienced, Adventure for all, SxS for Side by Side vehicles.

10 years of un-bloody Wolf-Hunt
For the 10th time this year the Wolf was hunted in Romania. Nearly 130 drivers from all over Europe and the United States had joined in the small Romanian mountain village Baisoara to enjoy there a week-long incomparable racing
event in 4 classes. Located at 1,400 meters above sea level participants hat to
resist several times a blizzard around there ears, but the tracks chosen by race
organizer Oliver heated drivers up like fire in hell, so that the joy of the cool
temperatures prevailed.
Monday was held the usual registration ceremony, with a doctor visit, paperwork and number assignment. EXTREME driver had then to run a test track
to demonstrate their skills. All did well, so all could start in the Extreme class
and did not have to switch to Crossover.
Night descending at 9 pm it was competing time for all. After many years, for
the 10th anniversary a night stage was scheduled again. Start was mandatory,
but results did not count except for a small penalty if not started. And no one
regretted it: after a quarter hour drive through the darkness all the drivers have
been parked on a hill. Motors and lights off. Waiting. Suddenly then blinking
lights beyond the darkness. The signal to start! The rest has to be experienced.
Cross-country towards the light somewhere out there. Some got lost, but at
2am the last hunters were recovered. A short sleep and off we went with the
mass start.
The following 5 days provided fascinating ATV driving as always. 30 percent of
the tracks are completely new and then linked to old sections on the computer
for GPS devices every year. Only the class Adventure-pilots could again drive
however they wanted, but simply enjoy from the last wolf back. Because the
new Side by Side class was set between crossover and Extreme by difficulty as
announced, the drop outs accumulated. After 2 days only 2 riders out of 8 were
left: a Maverick 1000 with the Latvian brothers, and a CFMOTO Z8 driven by
multiple Rally Champion Szabo with his Romanian Copilot Camilla. The Latvians fought stoically forward, but Szabo was simply faster. A deserved victory
for the Rally Champion and by this an incredible result for CFMOTO with this
successful Side by Side Z8.
In Adventure German last year’s winner Patsch and Rehberg let no chance
to anyone, even the earlier also victorious Romanians. In Crossover several
participants fought until the last minute of the last day to win or to step on
the podium. The crossover tracks became harder every day and always offered
beautiful pearls like „Paradise Canyon”. With 2 minutes intervals finally two
Poles and a Hungarian conquered the podium.
Undisputed was the victory of Radu Lungu, 2014 EXTREME winner. Initially,
the field in the kings class was open, the favorites caming from the Czech Republic, the USA and Romania. Sashka Pawel won the race in 2013 and 2015, the
US pilot Rick Cecco finished the race second in 2015, mainly due to technical
problems. This year all wanted to win - or fail. First out was Pawel. After an
engine failure he renounced repair, presumably also because already after 2
days Radu’s speed appeared as one of a different world... . Rick saw the yellow
card on the fourth day of the race. His rear suspension broke after a crazy ride.
At night this was replaced, but on the last day, the American rolled over and
gave up. As winner of four days Radu took the last day off and went to watch
the others where it was most spectacular: a 200 meters of altitude high steep
descent into a ravine, where racers were forced to secure themselves along a 60
m fixed rope. As on a via ferrata in the Alps: hook the carabiner fixed on rope
and ATV, and go. Without this security in the event of a rollover, the vehicle
would have rolled 200 meters down the canal into the depths, to the road. But
first maybe rolling over another rider ahead…
Emotions and adrenaline overwhelmed all participants at CFMOTO-HUNTTHE-WOLF. In EXTREME they are guaranteed. That is why pilots like the
Italian Pino or the Germans Michael, Felix and Dominik started the fourth
time already. Their friend and new starter in this class, Marco, was less lucky:
on the third day his Can-Am rolled down a hill over 100 m and ended up like
a slaughtered animal. The wolf was hungry.
At the award ceremony the 10th anniversary called for a special party time:
firecrackers exploded, confetti flew, two models emerged from a large cake and
a minor one was distributed to all hungry bellies. A pro Romanian folk singer
incited all to dance, then continued with DJ, free beer and food until the moon
was high.
Only late at night you could hear the howl of the wolf in the quiet night again.
10 Jahre unblutige Wolfsjagd
Zum 10ten Mal wurde heuer in Rumänien der Wolf gejagt. Fast 130 Fahrer
aus halb Europa und den USA fanden sich im kleinen rumänischen Bergdorf
Baisoara ein, um dort in 4 Klassen ein einwöchiges unvergleichbares Rennevent zu genießen. Auf 1400 m Meereshöhe blies den Teilnehmern mehrmals
ein Schneesturm um die Ohren, aber die von Rennorganisator Oliver Renzler
ausgesuchten Strecken heizten den Fahrern gehörig ein, sodass die Freude über
die kühlen Temperaturen überwog.
Montag fand das übliche Registrierungszeremoniell statt, mit ärztlicher Visite,
Papierkram und Nummerzuweisung. EXTREME-Fahrer mussten dann auf die
verlängerte Teststrecke, um ihr Können zu beweisen. Das taten sie dann auch
mehr oder weniger gut, sodass tags drauf alle auch in der Extreme-Klasse starten durften und nicht in Crossover wechseln mussten. 9 Uhr abends hieß es antreten, für alle. Seit Jahren war zum 10jährigen Jubiläum erstmals wieder eine
Nachtetappe vorgesehen. Diese wurde zwar nicht bewertet, aber mitmachen
war Pflicht. Und niemand bereute es: nach einer Viertelstunde Fahrt durch die
Dunkelheit wurden alle Fahrer auf einem Hügel geparkt. Motoren und Lichter
aus. Warten. Plötzlich dann ein Lichterblinken jenseits der Dunkelheit. Das
Signal zum Start! Den Rest muss man erlebt haben. Querfeldein dem Lichte
zu. Einige gingen verloren, aber um 2 Uhr nachts waren die letzten Jäger eingesammelt. Ein kurzer Schlaf und los ging es mit dem Massenstart.
Die folgenden 5 Tage boten wie immer faszinierendes ATV-Fahren. 30 Prozent
der Tracks werden jedes Jahr neu gesucht und dann mit alten Abschnitten
völlig neue am Computer für die GPS Geräte verknüpft. Nur die Klasse Adventure durfte auch heuer wo auch immer fahren und ab dem letzten Wolf nur
noch genießen. Weil die neue Side by Side Klasse wie angekündigt zwischen
Crossover und Extreme lag, häuften sich die Ausfälle. Nach 2 Tagen waren von
8 nur noch 2 Fahrer übrig: mit einem Maverick 1000 die lettischen Brüder
und mit der Rallychampion Szabo mit seiner rumänischen Copilotin Camilla
am Steuer eines CFmoto Z8. Die Letten kämpften sich stoisch vorwärts, aber
Szabo war einfach schneller. Ein verdienter Sieg für den Rallychampion und
ein Wahnsinnsergebnis für CFmoto und sein erfolgreiches Side by Side Z8.
In Adventure ließen die deutschen Vorjahressieger um Patsch und Rehberg
niemanden eine Chance, selbst den früher ebenfalls siegreichen Rumänen.
Die neue Regel, dass das Tagesrennen nach dem letzten “Wolf” beendet ist,
und damit nicht mehr zur Basis zurückgerast werden musste, wurde von allen
täglich für eine Genußfahrt nach Hause genutzt.
In Crossover kämpften mehrere Teilnehmer bis zur letzten Minute des letzten
Tages um Sieg und Podium. Die Crossover-Strecken verlangten den Fahrern
jeden Tag mehr ab und boten immer schönere Perlen wie “Paradise Canyon”.
Der eine und andere fiel den gehobenen Schwierigkeiten zum Opfer, doch
gröber verletzt wurde glücklicherweise niemand. Mit nur 2 Minuten Abständen
standen schlussendlich zwei Polen und ein Ungar auf dem Podium.
Zu einem unangefochtenen Sieg fuhr der 2014 EXTREME-Sieger Radu Lungu.
Anfangs war das Feld in der Königsklasse noch offen, die Favoriten kamen aus
der Tschechei, den USA und eben Rumänien. Sashka Pawel gewann das Rennen 2013 und 2015, der US Profi Rick Cecco beendete das Rennen 2015 nach
technischen Problemen als Zweiter. Heuer wollten alle drei gewinnen - oder
scheitern. Als erster gab dann Pawel auf. Nach einem Motorschaden verzichtete
er auf eine Reparatur, vermutlich weil er die Klasse und den Vorsprung Radu’s
als uneinholbar einstufte. Rick sah die gelbe Karte am vierten Renntag. Nach
brachialischer Fahrt brach seine Hinterradaufhängung. Nachts wurde diese
dann zwar ausgetauscht, aber am letzten Tag überschlug sich der Amerikaner
und gab auf. Als Sieger von vier Tagen nahm Radu am letzten Renntag nur als
Zuschauer teil, und zwar dort, wo es am spektakulärsten war: bei einer 200
Höhenmeter Steilabfahrt in einen Kanal, den die Fahrer an 60 m Fixseilen gesichert einfahren mussten. Wie bei einem Klettersteig in den Alpen: Karabiner
einhängen und umhängen. Denn ohne dieser Sicherheit wäre, im Falle eines
Überschlags, das Gefährt 200 m über den Kanal in die Tiefe gerollt, bis zur
Straße. Aber vorher vielleicht noch auf einen vorherfahrenden Fahrer.
Emotionen und Adrenalin suchen alle Teilnehmer bei CFMOTO-HUNT-THEWOLF. In EXTREME sind sie garantiert. Die Deutschen Michael Bauer, Felix
Balz und Dominik Appel wissen das und nahmen schon zum vierten Mal in
dieser Klasse teil. Marco Wilden zum ersten Mal, aber - wie er sagt - nicht zum
letzten, obwohl seine Can-Am am dritten Tag nach einem 100 m Rollover wie
ein ausgeschlachtetes Tier zum Erliegen kam. Der Wolf war hungrig.
Nach dem letzten Renntag stieg die Party: zur Preisverleihung und zur erfolgreich und unverletzt überstandenen 10jährigen Veranstaltung. Böller krachten, Konfettis flogen, zwei Modells entstiegen einer großen Torte und eine
kleinere wurde zum Essen verteilt, Gratisbier und rumänische Fleisch-Mici
schenken Kraft und machten Laune. Zur Musik eines DJ tanzten vor allem die
baltischen Teilnehmer was das Zeug hielt, und erst zu später Stunde konnte
man das Heulen des Wolfes in stiller Nacht wieder hören.

Spośród wszystkich imprez quadowych niewiele może się wyróżnić na tle innych czymś oryginalnym czy przełomowym. Jednak są diamenty w koronie,
imprezy które raz odwiedzone już na stałe zapisują się w sercu uczestnika,
wwiercają się w psychikę i nie dają o sobie zapomnieć. Nie inaczej jest w tym
przypadku, w małej górskiej wiosce o nazwie Statiunea Montele Baisoara w Rumuńskiej Transylwanii raz do roku odbywa się święto wszystkich quadowców,
rajd techniczny o nazwie CFMOTO-HUNT-THE-WOLF.
W końcówce maja, który niczym nie przypomina tego naszego, w zmieniającej
się co 10 minut pogodzie na małym placu na szczycie góry spotykają się
najbardziej zawzięci specjaliści od górskiej jazdy z całego świata. Miałem to
szczęście, że w tym roku, wyjazd, który planowałem od co najmniej dwóch lat
doszedł do skutku. I uzależniłem się, w jednej sekundzie – stojąc w drugim
szeregu do startu równoległego z trzydziestoma quadowcami z klasy Extreme i
blisko setką z pozostałych dwóch klas. Sam rajd to 5 dni ścigania, po najbardziej
ekstremalnym terenie jaki kiedykolwiek widziałem na oczy. Nie można nawet
mówić o drapkach, trawersach, podjazdach czy zjazdach w kontekście tego
rajdu, bo i tak nie opisałoby to grozy tego co tam zastaliśmy. Jeśli miałbym
porównać tę imprezę do czegokolwiek innego to moim pierwszym skojarzeniem są imprezy motocyklowe typu Hard Enduro.
Potężne góry poprzeplatane pionowymi ścieżkami, pełnymi kolein, często
sięgającymi wysokością powyżej kilometra. Można sobie wyobrazić emocje
towarzyszące podjeżdżaniu pod przeszkody tego typu, od minuty, z przodem
uniesionym w górze i słysząc, że w Can Amie XXC zaczyna brakować mocy pod
kolejne 100 wypionowań i korzeni w głębokich do pół koła koleinach. Jedno
jest pewne, ani mój opis ani zdjęcia i filmy nie oddają chociażby namiastki tego
co się tam dzieje.
Niestety dla mnie wyjazd był pechowy, problemy z moim quadem zmusiły
mnie do przejścia na pozycje widza względnie szybko, bo już po drugim dniu.
Jednak reszta Polaków pokazała pazur i zaszli w rywalizacji bardzo daleko, nie
wspominając już o dwóch najwyższych stopniach podium w klasie Crossover,
które padły łupem naszych rodaków i zarazem weteranów Hunta - Jakuba
Śliwy i Aleksa Mazurkiewicza. Jedynym z extremów, który dojechał do mety
był ubiegłoroczny wicemistrz Polski Waldemar „Waldo” Bartkowiak, który
udowodnił wszystkim, że da się ten rajd przejechać bez wspomagania i na quadzie jednocylindrowym. Tak jak sam stwierdził, wygrał klasę Japończyków będąc
jedynym, który takim sprzętem przekroczył linię mety. Wszystko, zaczynając
od ekstremalnej trasy z przepięknymi widokami, przez organizację aż na gęstej
jak zupa atmosferze rywalizacji i przyjaźni zawodników kończąc było dla mnie
czymś co parę razy, przekręciło licznik na skali piękna tego rajdu. Na pewno
wrócę tam w najbliższych latach, żeby przy odrobinie szczęścia powalczyć o
najwyższe lokaty czego i sobie i moim kolegom życzę z całego serca.
Specjalne pozdrowienia dla całej ekipy z Polski, ale w pierwszej kolejności dla
mojego wspaniałego Taty, bez którego start w tej imprezie pozostałby w sferze
marzeń.

Killer Instinct
Dopo 5 giorni di gara della CF Moto Hunt The Wolf, questa è l’espressione che
ho sentito più spesso sia tra i piloti che tra gli addetti ai lavori. Che cos’è?
Ve lo spiego in queste pagine.
Arrivata ormai al decimo anno di vita questa “epica” gara nelle foreste della
Romania non ha visto che salire i suoi partecipanti anno per anno fino a toccare
i 130 di questa edizione, divisi in quattro categorie: Adventure, Crossover ATV
e SSV ed Extreme.
Il campo di battaglia è l’ormai nota Transilvania del Nord, precisamente il piccolo centro montano di Baisorii, a 70 km di distanza dalla più nota Cluj-Napoca.
L’accoglienza climatica non è stata delle migliori, neve, vento e freddo inaspettato per questo periodo dell’anno, ma d’altronde siamo in Europa dell’Est e
per giunta in piena montagna. Il clima comunque è l’ultimo dei problemi per
i 130 piloti, il tracciato che li aspetta per i prossimi 5 giorni di gara metterà
sotto estremo sforzo uomini e mezzi per tutte le categorie e farà dimenticare
immediatamente l’inadeguatezza delle temperature.
Quest’anno sono tredici i team iscritti alla Adventure. Ricordiamo che in questa
categoria è possibile iscriversi sia con quad che con side by side con un massimo
di sei partecipanti su tre mezzi. Ogni mattina l’impeccabile macchina organizzativa consegna ad ogni team le coordinate e le fotografie dei luoghi (chiamati
Wolf - lupi) da raggiungere in stretto ordine crescente. Ogni team ha l’obbligo,
una volta raggiunto il luogo, di mandare un sms all’organizzazione e scattare
una fotografia nella quale deve apparire l’intero team. In base a quanti “lupi” si
raggiungono e al tempo si stila una classifica generale. Tra gli iscritti a questa
categoria anche un team italiano, più precisamente toscano, il QM Racing team
con Matteo Lardori e Valentino Biancucci su Polaris RZR 1000 Turbo, Matis
Petri su Polaris Scrambler 1000, Flavio Andreucci e Elia Guazzini, sempre su
un 1000 Turbo, e Duccio Lardori come supporto tecnico e logistico. Il team
toscano ha ben figurato giungendo settimo nella generale e se non fosse per un
day3 piuttosto sfortunato che li ha costretti a fare una saldatura di emergenza
in piena foresta, le speranze di podio sarebbero state più reali.
Novità per questo 2016 è stata la categoria Crossover dedicata agli SSV, degli
8 side by side al via sono arrivati in fondo al day5 solamente due equipaggi: il
vincitore è risultato Gergo Szabo, campione rallystico rumeno su CF Moto Z8
e a 59 minuti di distacco il lituano Andrejs Brehous su Can-Am Maverick 1000.
Nella stessa categoria dedicata agli ATV sono stati ben 55 i partenti. Il vincitore
è stato il polacco Aleksander Mazurkiewics, alle sue spalle il connazionale Jakub
Sliwa, mentre terzo è giunto l’ungherese Emil Szarvas. La Crossover anche se
è una categoria intermedia è comunque molto difficile, ogni partecipante ha
un GPS con il tracciato da seguire e una tolleranza di circa 100 metri se non si
vuole incorrere in un cartellino giallo, dopo il secondo giallo si è esclusi dalla
classifica generale.
Passiamo ora alla Extreme. Durante il viaggio di ritorno ho pensato a lungo a
come descrivere e far rendere al meglio questa selettiva categoria. Sono giunto a
conclusione che la Extreme è la pura essenza dell’ATV, non basta avere capacità
di guida sopra la media, ne saper usare al meglio il GPS o il verricello, ne basta
essere super preparati fisicamente. Tutte queste cose se le si padroneggiano
contemporaneamente beh… si arriva in fondo, se si ha anche fortuna, ma per
vincere serve il “killer instinct” cioè quella dose giusta di pazzia, inconsapevolezza, forza, determinazione e sacrificio che veramente in pochi hanno. Uno
di questi è senza dubbio il rumeno Radu Lungu, meritatamente il vincitore di
questa 10^ CF Moto Hunt the Wolf. Radu non è una sorpresa, già era arrivato
alla vittoria due anni fa, quest’anno ha battuto la concorrenza di Magnus Linderberg, Felix Baltz e di uno sfortunato Rick Cecco (USA). Il rumeno non ha
sbagliato davvero nulla, addirittura si è permesso il lusso di non gareggiare il
day5 in quanto uno dei giorni poteva essere scartato dalla classifica generale.
È stata una sorpresa per me vederlo sul punto più difficile del tracciato aiutare
e incitare i suoi colleghi.
Le ultime parole le voglio spendere per una persona speciale, per Giuseppe
de Michele, in arte Pino Codino, unico italiano in gara nella Extreme, amato
e stimato da tutti i suoi colleghi. Pino come ogni anno è stato il primo a iscriversi alla gara in tutta Europa e, anche quest’anno, la sfortuna non gli ha
dato la possibilità di arrivare alla fine: il suo Renegade si è fermato spesso per
noie meccaniche, guai al sistema di navigazione e infine, anche la febbre gli ha
messo i bastoni tra le ruote. Nonostante tutto ciò, già fuori gara, ha corso uno
splendido day5 confermando che lui è uno da “Killer Instinct”.
