Art and Media Studies (M.A.)
The Master‘s degree programme in Art and Media Studies
understands art and media as mutually and necessarily
complementary fields. Since this applies equally to the
present and the past, the academic examination of art and
media at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg is
offered in a single degree programme. The programme is
offered by Cultural Studies and is research-oriented.
Relevant expertise and capabilities in interdisciplinary and
transdisciplinary work are acquired, which include issues
from Gender Studies and Postcolonial Studies.
Theory and history of Art and Media in their historical and
contemporary forms are central to the degree programme
– their interactions, institutions and forms of mediation.
Special focus is placed on work and research approaches
using image theory and epistemology, semiotics, discourse
analysis, gender politics and cross-cultural aspects. Guided
by current social and political issues, both historical-critical
and theoretical-systematic analyses and commentaries are
tested and discussed in the field of Art and Media. In this
way, students are able to perform research in an independent and problem-oriented manner.
The Art and Media Studies Master‘s programme in Oldenburg is characterized by small work groups with individual
guidance, project work and promotion of self-study. In addition, one’s own academic profile can be refined through
individual disciplinary specializations.
The Master‘s programme is aimed at Bachelor graduates
in Art and Media Studies as well as other closely related
Bachelor’s programmes which focus on the complexity of
artistic, media and cultural expression, usage and forms of
communication. The basic knowledge and skills in Art and
Media Studies acquired in such programmes should aid students to further build on problem-oriented, theoretical and
analytical academic work.
Programme structure and content
During the four-semester Master‘s programme you will earn
a total of 120 ECTS credit points. Students must complete
five disciplinary course units in Art and Media Studies each
worth 15 ECTS. In addition, a further 15 ECTS are awarded
for an area of specialization. The final Master‘s course unit is
awarded 30 ECTS (including a Master‘s thesis).
The Art and Media Studies programme consists of the following course units:

Theory and History of Art and Media
Media theory and Media practice

Aesthetic practice forms part of the programme in conjunction with theoretical reflection. Excursions to exhibitions
or festivals are an important part of the programme. Single
modules also offer students the possibility to prepare a
course by themselves. You can refine your own academic
profile by setting individual specializations in a course unit
of your own composition.
In the area of specialization, you can complement your studies by acquiring multidisciplinary skills and competences
(such as foreign languages, presentation techniques, forms
of publication, etc.); relevant professional internships may
also be counted.
Participation in a content-related degree programme
during a semester abroad is highly recommended.
Potential Career Path
In the Art and Media Studies Master‘s programme, students
acquire argumentative skills and abilities, which provide opportunities for work in both established professional fields
as well as in emerging jobs in digital media. These opportunities include positions in art and media institutions, such as
museums, art associations, galleries, festivals, online portals, as well as cultural administration and policy activities.
Established professional fields often require further conditions that are usually acquired through internships in
museums, publishing houses, the media or broadcasting
organizations. Within the ever-developing spheres of employment, project skills, teamwork and/or independent selfemployment is often in great demand alongside methodical reflection and up-to-date research-based knowledge.
The Master‘s programme at the University of Oldenburg is
designed to prepare you well for these fields.
Furthermore, the Art and Media Studies Master‘s programme also offers the possibility of an academic career at
universities, art colleges and research institutes in the disciplines of Arts, Media and Cultural Studies. There is also a
range of PhD degree programmes at the Carl von Ossietzky
University of Oldenburg, for example in structured doctoral
programmes, for instance, in the PhD study programme in
Cultural Gender Studies.
