Course Description
The—admittedly quite German—theme of the law, be
it a law imposed by an external authority or the law
one gives oneself, is ubiquitous in Kleist’s oeuvre and
produces some of his most striking paradoxes: Michael
Kohlhaas, a man whose relentless desire to uphold
justice turns him into a moral monster; Judge Adam,
who must hold to the letter of the law a culprit who is
none other than himself; and the Prince of Homburg,
who by an act of insubordination wins the battle but
forfeits his life. And yet, time and again, Kleist also
offers us fantasies of radical casualness and ease, such
as the fugacious utopia in “The Earthquake of Chili” or
the Marquise of O.’s groundless and senseless
forgiving of her rapist—fantasies that in the “Theatre of
Marionettes” will produce the cryptic vision of a world
of pure spontaneity. These opposing moments of law and ease, which have left their
traces in almost every work by Kleist, will be our focus in this seminar. Conducted in
German.
