Advanced Graduate Course on Molecular Systems for Devices 110 Ito: Open Learning Plaza 1F Seminar Room(110) Energy from Soot: Engineering Carbons for Electrochemistry Abstract Carbon is a double-edged sword. In the form CO₂, it is changing our climate and causing extreme weather. In the form of soot particles released from burning fuels, it causes lung disease and millions of deaths each year. However, carbon could also be our saviour. From the viewpoints of materials science, chemistry, and engineering, carbon is an exciting and extremely useful element. From buckminsterfullerene, to carbon nanotubes, to graphene, research in carbon has spawned Nobel Prizes and entire fields of research. Prof. Stephen M. Lyth International Institute for Carbon Neutral Energy Research (WPI-I²CNER) Kyushu University WPI Associate Professor ■お問い合わせ先 In this seminar, Prof. Lyth will discuss the history, fundamental properties, and potential energy applications of carbon. In particular he will talk about how to engineer the properties of carbon at the atomic and molecular scale. This is achieved by doping with heteroatoms, decorating with nanoparticles, or functionalizing with chemical groups. By exerting control over carbon, it is possible to make better batteries, fuel cells and electrolyzers. Thereby we can reduce CO₂ and particulate emissions, with benefits to the whole world. It is even possible to convert carbon dioxide directly to ethanol using carbon-based electrochemistry. Therefore, electrochemical energy conversion using carbon could save us after all…
