Hello Longleaf Families!
Congratulations to our
student athletes who have been
named to the 2014 Longleaf

Cheerleading squads! I’m very
proud of their performance,
both in and out, of the
classroom! I know that our
student athletes will do great
things this year! The team
rosters are located inside!
We kicked off our annual fundraiser event on Friday, August 29, 2014.
The funds we raise will be used to purchase instructional supplies for the school,
and help pay for field trips! Please see the flyer at the end of this newsletter for
more information!
Please make note of the many events that are coming up in September,
including our Open House, which is September 16 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. This is a
great opportunity for you to meet your child’s teachers and introduce yourselves.
Finally, please take a moment to make sure that you have updated your
students registration information via InfoSnap, including the Responsible Use Form
that is required for students to use school devices. Please see the following
messge.
Sincerely,
Angela K. Thom

PSAT Information, Mary Dixon, Director of School Counseling, Ext. 31505
Eighth grade students will have the opportunity to take the PSAT at Longleaf Middle School on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) program provides students and
educators with tools that help improve learning and prepare students for success in college and beyond.
The administrative cost is $14 to take the PSAT. Students will need to bring two number 2 pencils and a
calculator. The test will begin at 7:45 A.M. and end at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 15, 2014.
Students who register to take the PSAT will receive the 2014 Official Student Guide to PSAT/NMSQT
which includes test-taking tips, information about the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, and a fulllength practice test. Also, students can find sample questions and test-taking tips, as well as complete explanations to practice test questions, at collegeboard.org/psat.
Additionally, a free preparation PSAT workshop will be held at the school for students who will be taking
the PSAT prior to the test date. Students and parents will receive information of the date and time of the
workshop.
If you want to have your eighth grade student take the PSAT, please contact Ms. Mary Dixon at 691-4870
ext. 31505 or send her an e-mail at [email protected].

S.T.E.A.M. into Art! Written By Darneesha Myers, 8th Grade Art Student
It may be hard for some to believe, but it’s best for all to believe, that art has always been cooperatively a part of S.T.E.A.M. Naturally, science, technology, engineering,
etc… all play a big role in art. Art is valued, sold for its success in
communicating ideas or feelings.
Here at Longleaf Middle School, art students have had the
pleasure in learning about different lines, such as curved, horizontal,
diagonal, and zigzag lines. For example, a line defines a shape and is
also one dimensional. Some lines can be associated with each other
based on the movement or direction the line makes, like curvy or
wavy. Lines are also a continuous mark made on some surface by a
moving point. This refers to what we’re learning now about basic
shapes and 2 point perspectives.
The five basic shapes of art are cube, cylinder, cone, sphere, and pyramid. According to S.T.E.A.M,
the “M” represents math which contributes a lot to a 2 point perspective drawing. It may seem like a lot,
but I promise there are many tools to create art. The tools of art consist of the elements of design. Lines,
shapes, and space make art pop in such unique ways. So, S.T.E.A.M into art and make science, technology,
engineering, art, and math valuable, because they matter!
