Tabaluga House Rio programme gives hope for street children
Prof. Hans Georg Näder and Olavo Egydio Monteiro de Carvalho extend their cooperation in the
Tabaluga House Rio project by a further two years during the Paralympic Games, focussing on
English language and computer courses as well as a nursery school project.
Nearly two years since the Tabaluga House Rio project had its start, Prof. Hans Georg Näder and
Olavo Egydio Monteiro Carvalho have now extended the project. Since 2015, the Tabaluga House
Rio has been organising free educational programmes for street children together with its regional
partner "Instituto Marquês de Salamanca". This has included the equipping of computer
workstations as well as providing English courses. Education is the only real opportunity children
in Brazil have to escape the impoverished conditions in which they live.
On the occasion of the Paralympic Games, Prof. Hans Georg Näder and Olavo Egydio Monteiro
de Carvalho have decided to extend their project up through 2018.
In addition to the opportunities already offered, the focus will also be on a nursery school project.
"By expanding to include nursery aged children, we will be able to reach boys and girls who are
still too young for English and computer courses. Our goal is to provide them with support as early
as possible to give them the chance of a future life outside the favelas," said Prof. Hans Georg
Näder.
The educational system in Brazil includes state as well as private schools. While there are no fees
for the state schools, the learning materials and personnel there tend to be of a low quality. But
more than 80% of children and young people in Brazil have no alternative to the state education
system as their parents cannot afford private schools. These children often leave school early,
leaving them few employment opportunities later on.
