The interdisciplinary and inter-faculty DFG Research Training Group

The interdisciplinary and inter-faculty DFG Research Training Group 1681: Privacy
and Digitalisation, embedded at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty
of Law of the University of Passau, in co-operation with the German Academic
Exchange Service (DAAD), invites applications for
2 scholarships for international doctoral candidates (€1,000 monthly stipend)
to start 1 April 2017. The funds are provided by the DAAD for a period of three years;
candidates from low-income countries can be funded for up to four years. In addition
to the scholarship, the funding line includes a fixed sum for travel expenses, health,
accident and liability insurance as well as a contribution towards research expenses.
About the Research Training Group (RTG)
The doctoral programme focuses on the privacy-related aspects of digitalisation and
thus engages in a highly topical and politically relevant theme of outstanding social
and academic importance. The aim of the doctoral programme is to assess the value
of privacy under the terms of digitalisation and increasing informational heteronomy
and to question existing privacy concepts in this context. This takes place in the three
fields of enquiry 'digitality', 'surveillance and control' and 'self-determination and
responsibility'.
Doctoral candidates enrolled at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities may conduct their
research in the following research areas: Literature and Media Studies; Linguistics;
English and American Studies; Slavic Studies; General and Applied Ethics; Political
Philosophy; and Pedagogy.
Alternatively, doctoral candidates may enrol at the Faculty of Law, where they will
gain access to the fields of Media and Information Law; Security Law and Internet
Law; Data Protection Law; and Legal Theory.
Applicants whose background is in another research discipline are welcome to apply;
however, their application will only be successful if a suitable doctoral supervisor can

As part of its structured doctoral programme, the RTG provides training in the core
competences of research methods, content-related expertise and interdisciplinary
research skills; furthermore, it places the emphasis on competences which give its
doctoral candidates a competitive edge across research areas and occupational
fields as well as those that enhance their ability to assume executive functions.

Eligibility criteria
The RTG is designed as a structured academic programme for German and
international graduates whose academic profile and outstanding interdisciplinary
research proposals set them apart from the rest; each proposal must be feasible
within the funding period and promise excellent research results.
The successful candidates are expected to hold a good master's degree that formally
qualifies them for doctoral study (for more details, read the doctoral degree
regulations of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and The Faculty of Law, available
from www.uni-passau.de/index.php?id=561; please note that the regulations are only
available in German). In their previous studies, candidates are expected to have
acquired relevant discipline-specific and methodological knowledge in their field of
expertise that enables them to successfully complete their research project.
Beyond the formal qualifications, seeing a research project through from beginning to
end requires a great deal of dedication, the ability to deal with conflicts, selfmanagement skills, the ability to think and act strategically, self-motivation, welldeveloped communication skills and the ability to work together with others.

• a copy of your university degree certificate and transcript of records (and a certified
translation, if necessary)
• a curriculum vitae with details on your academic career to date
• a letter of motivation that explains what you believe makes you eligible for both the
RTG's research interests and its training programme and how you intend to
contribute to the RTG
• a research proposal (5-10 pages) which contextualises the project within the RTG
and provides details on who should be your supervisor (see our website for the
respective disciplines and scholars)
• two sealed letters of reference written by a university teacher (may be sent
directly): this letter must provide information about your academic potential
• candidates from foreign universities must hold an equivalent of the corresponding
German university degree and provide proof of advanced language skills in
German (e.g. language certificate at level DSH-1, TestDaF 3 or equivalent)
• Applicants who have been in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of
nomination by the RTG cannot be considered.

Das interdisziplinäre und interfakultäre DFG-Graduiertenkolleg 1681 „Privatheit und
Digitalisierung“ ist an der Philosophischen und an der Juristischen Fakultät der Universität
Passau verankert und vergibt in Kooperation mit dem Deutschen Akademischen Austausch
Dienst (DAAD) ab dem 1. April 2017:
2 Promotionsstipendien für ausländische Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden
(monatliche Stipendienrate von 1.000 Euro)
Das DAAD-Promotionsstipendium umfasst dabei eine bis zu dreijährige, im Falle von
Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden aus Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern auch bis zu
vierjährige Förderung durch den DAAD. Die von dem DAAD vergebenen Stipendien
umfassen neben der monatlichen Stipendienrate in Höhe von 1.000 Euro eine
länderabhängige Reisekostenpauschale, eine kombinierte Kranken-, Unfall-, und
Haftpflichtversicherung sowie Studien- und Forschungsbeihilfen.
Nach einer durch das Graduiertenkolleg „Privatheit und Digitalisierung“ getroffenen
Vorauswahl geeigneter Bewerberinnen und Bewerber trifft der DAAD in einem zweiten
Verfahrensschritt die endgültige Auswahl. Genauere Informationen zum Fortgang des
Verfahrens erhalten die durch das Graduiertenkolleg nominierten Bewerberinnen und
Bewerber.
Über das Kolleg und seine Forschung
Das Graduiertenkolleg widmet sich den privatheitsspezifischen Aspekten der Digitalisierung
und greift damit ein Thema von hoher Aktualität und politischer Relevanz, gesellschaftlicher
Brisanz und einer herausragenden wissenschaftlichen Bedeutung auf. Ziel des
Graduiertenkollegs ist es, den Stellenwert des Privaten unter den Bedingungen von
Digitalisierung und zunehmender informationeller Fremdbestimmung zu bemessen und die
vorhandenen Privatheitskonzepte auf den Prüfstand zu stellen. Dies geschieht in den drei
Arbeitsfeldern „Digitalität“, „Überwachung und Kontrolle“ sowie “Selbstbestimmung und
Verantwortung“.
Beteiligte Fachgebiete, in denen eine Promotionsmöglichkeit besteht, sind an der
Philosophischen Fakultät: Literatur- und Medienwissenschaft, Sprachwissenschaft, Anglistik,
Amerikanistik, Slavistik, Allgemeine und angewandte Ethik, Politische Philosophie sowie
Allgemeine Pädagogik.
Bei thematischer Eignung besteht weiterhin die Möglichkeit zur Promotion an der
Juristischen Fakultät, insbesondere in den Bereichen Medien- und Informationsrecht,
Sicherheitsrecht und Internetrecht sowie Datenschutzrecht und Rechtstheorie.
Bewerbungen aus anderen Fachgebieten sind willkommen, sofern sie innerhalb des Kollegs
betreut werden können (Informationen über die beteiligten Lehrstühle können Sie der
Webseite des Graduiertenkollegs entnehmen).
Im Rahmen einer strukturierten Graduiertenausbildung vermittelt das Kolleg sowohl
Kernkompetenzen wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens, inhaltliche Fachkompetenz, die Fähigkeit
interdisziplinär zu arbeiten als auch Kompetenzen, die die Kollegiatinnen und Kollegiaten
über Fach-/Berufsfeldgrenzen hinaus wettbewerbsfähig machen und ihre persönliche
Entwicklung zur Wahrnehmung von Führungsaufgaben unterstützen.
Voraussetzungen für die Bewerbung
Das Kolleg ist als strukturierte Graduiertenausbildung für deutsche wie internationale
Graduierte konzipiert, die sich in einem Auswahlverfahren durch ihr fachliches Profil und ein
herausragendes, interdisziplinär anschlussfähiges und im zeitlichen Rahmen der Förderung
realisierbares Forschungskonzept auszeichnen, welches exzellente Forschungsergebnisse
verspricht.
Voraussetzung für die Bewerbung ist ein überdurchschnittlicher wissenschaftlicher
Abschluss, der zur Promotion berechtigt (die Promotionsordnungen der Philosophischen
und der Juristischen Fakultät der Universität Passau finden Sie unter
www.uni-passau.de/index.php?id=561). Während ihres Studiums haben die Bewerberinnen
und Bewerber in überdurchschnittlichem Maße einschlägige Fach- und Methodenkenntnisse
auf ihrem Gebiet erworben, die sie dazu befähigen, ein eigenes Forschungsprojekt
erfolgreich abzuschließen.
Über die fachliche Qualifikation hinaus verlangt ein eigenes Forschungsprojekt auch
Leistungsbereitschaft, Konfliktfähigkeit, Selbstmanagement, strategisches Denken und
Handeln, Selbstmotivation, kommunikative Kompetenz und Kooperationswillen.
Zum Zeitpunkt der Nominierung durch das Graduiertenkolleg „Privatheit und Digitalisierung“
dürfen sich die Bewerberinnen und Bewerber noch nicht länger als fünfzehn Monate in
Deutschland aufhalten.

• Nachweis des Hochschulabschlusses, welcher nicht länger als sechs Jahre zurückliegen
darf (gegebenenfalls in beglaubigter Übersetzung)
• Lebenslauf mit detaillierter Darstellung des wissenschaftlichen Werdegangs
• Bewerbungsschreiben, welches die persönliche Eignung für das Forschungs- und
Ausbildungsprogramm dokumentiert und das darlegt, wie sich die Bewerberin/der
Bewerber in das Kolleg einbringen will (Motivationsschreiben)
• Zwei vertrauliche Gutachten von Hochschulprofessorinnen / Hochschulprofessoren, das
über die fachliche und methodische Kompetenz sowie das wissenschaftliche Potential
der Bewerberin bzw. des Bewerbers Auskunft gibt (kann auch direkt an uns geschickt
werden)
• Darstellung des Dissertationsvorhabens (Exposé) von circa fünf bis zehn Seiten mit
fachlich begründeter Angabe eines möglichen Betreuers bzw. einer Betreuerin aus dem
Kreis der Beteiligten (siehe Website des Graduiertenkollegs), welches das geplante
Vorhaben im Kolleg verortet und kontextualisiert
• Für Bewerberinnen und Bewerber ausländischer Universitäten wird das Äquivalent des
jeweils entsprechenden deutschen Abschlusses und der Nachweis von Deutschkenntnissen der Stufe DSH 1/TestDaF 3 oder Äquivalent verlangt.

Zum Zeitpunkt der Nominierung durch das Graduiertenkolleg „Privatheit und
Digitalisierung“ dürfen sich die Bewerber noch nicht länger als 15 Monate in
Deutschland aufhalten.
