Chapter 6 Grammar Japanese Adjectives There are two kinds of adjectives in Japanese; い adjectives and な adjectives. Both adjectives describe nouns, but their conjugations are different. Adjectives that end in 〜あい、〜いい、〜おい、or 〜うい are い adjectives. All other adjectives are な adjectives. The only two exceptions to this rule we have learned so far are きらい and とくい. These are な adjectives posing as い adjectives! Japanese Adjectives So how do we conjugate い adjectives? Present, affirmative tense Just take the い adjective and add です. That’s it! Ex. さむい(cold) → さむいです is cold Japanese Adjectives Present, negative tense Drop the last い and add くないです/くありませ ん。Dropping the last い gives us the adjective stem. さむい(cold) → さむくないです/さむくありません。 not cold Japanese Adjectives Past, affirmative tense Drop the last い and add かったです。 さむい(cold) →さむかったです。 was cold Japanese Adjectives Past, negative tense First, look at the present negative form. It should end with くない.Drop the last い from the くない and add かったです。 Or drop the くない and add くありませんでした。 さむい(cold) →さむくない→さむくなかったです/さ むくありませんでした wasn’t cold Japanese Adjectives Let’s look at the い adjective たかい to put it all in perspective. Present Past + たかいです たかかったです pos. ー たかくないです neg. たかくありません たかくなかったです たかくありませんでした Japanese Adjectives One to be careful about is our old friend, いい(good). When we conugate it, we must use the よい form. Present Past + いいです よかったです pos. ー よくないです よくなかったです neg. よくありません よくありませんでした Japanese Adjectives Conjugating な adjectives is slightly easier! Because な adjectives have many different endings, (i.e not just い) how can we conjugate them all with the same rules? You’ve done it before with the adjective すき... Just conjugate the です! Japanese Adjectives Let’s review how we do it. Present Past + すきです すきでした pos. ー すきではありません すきではありませんでした Just conjugate the です! Japanese Adjectives So let’s review: There are two types of adjectives in Japanese: い adjectives and な adjectives. い adjectives all end in あい、いい、うい、&おい. The conjugation is a bit complicated, but once we know the rules, we just have to follow them to get the job done. Present, positive – just add です。 Present, negative – drop the い + くないです。 Japanese Adjectives Past, positive – drop the い +かったです。 Past, negative – drop the い + くなかったです。 な adjectives – all the other ones! Because all of the endings are different, we conjugate the です part! (This is just like nouns!) Present, positive – adjective + です。 Present, negative - adjective +ではありません。 Japanese Adjectives Past, positive – adjective + でした。 Past, negative - adjective +ではありませんでし た。 That’s how we conjugate them! How do we use them? Japanese Adjectives As a description in the end of a sentence. My hair is brown. わたしはかみのけがちゃいろいです。 I don’t like dancing. わたしはdansuがすきではありません。 Remember! We can use nouns to describe too! I am not a college student. わたしはがくせいではありません。 Japanese Adjectives As a description in the front of a noun. い adjectives – just put in front of the noun. Lim sensei is a smart teacher. Limせんせいはあたまがいいせんせいです。 な adjectives –put in front of the noun +な. I read my favorite book. だいすきなほんをよみました。 I like green eyes. みどりのめがすきです。 Japanese Adjectives nouns –put in front of the noun+の. I like green eyes. みどりのめがすきです。 Phew! We can describe anything now!
