Hello Citizen's of Omitama! Jeff's Journal Vol.20 I hope you all had a wonderful Golden week. I certainly did. I went to Tokyo, Gunma Prefecture, and the Kasama Pottery Festival. Also in May I participated at the Tamari Festival by doing "Wizard of Oz" activities. We made rainbow cookies, character masks, and participants were entered into a drawing where they could win a prize. It was a lot of fun. I always enjoy to do interactive activities with the students. In my personal opinion, it is a better way to teach English rather than note-taking and it encourages students to learn more English because it is fun instead of a chore. I am also very happy to announce that I have collected books for "Friendship Libraries" throughout Omitama. I am going to be working on getting at least one in each of the bigger communities of Minori, Tamari, and Ogawa before I leave in August. This will be a good opportunity for students and adults to be able to come get books written in English and expand on their skills. Since I started collected books, I have received a total of a little over 800 books that will be divided between the communities. My hope is that the future Friendship Ambassadors will switch these books around so everyone can enjoy them all. If the project goes over well, even when I leave I will continue to work to make these "Friendship Libraries" into media centers with the possibility of adding music, games, movies, and other interactive things to encourage learning not only English but about other cultures as well. The world we live in can be a wonderful place, but we often misunderstand each other. The best way to make fixes to these problems is by learning. I will let you all know the locations of these "Friendship Libraries" as soon as we have them set up. Please challenge yourself and enjoy them. In June I will be continuing my work as usual, but also start to wrap up these activities as I prepare to leave. I also plan on attending as many student club activities as I can before I leave. I always enjoy seeing my students excel both in and out of the classroom. They all have very bright futures ahead of them. Until Next Time, Jeffrey Haaga
