Bulletin Nr. 2
Sunday - May 15, 2016
On Saturday morning more and more guests
arrived at Hohenpark Hohenroda and exact at noon
Michael Gromoeller gave all players a warm
welcome. Then he started the traditional auction
together with Joerg Fritsche – same procedure as
every year! Some people had followed the advices
to fill their pockets with Euros and during the
auctions there was a lot of laughter and we all
enjoyed ourselves. Not surprisingly, the highest
bids came in for last year’s winners David Gold &
Kevin Castner and Vytautas Vainikonis & Wojtek
Olanski (each 720 €). Some bidders followed their
own logic; other bidders trusted their personal
instinct or certain suggestions. After the official
auction there were active “private deals” to buy
and sell some shares of the favourites.
After a quick lunch there were 2 sessions of each
18 boards. Many prominent names appeared on
the top places, but at the end of the day the
Austrian pair which won the first 18 boards
defended their lead: Doris Fischer and Bernd
Saurer scored close to 1,000 IMPs and were
followed by David Cole & David Kendrick and
Andrej Arlovich & Erikas Vainikonis. We are all
looking for another exciting 45 boards before all 3
finals (A, B and C) will start and we hope that we
will all have fun!

InTalk:KevinCastner
When he came to Hohenroda last year, only very few people knew him: Kevin Castner is more or less a
real “greenhorn” in the bridge world. He was just 5 years old when he learned bridge from his mother,
and probably his enthusiasm for this most fascinating card game was her heritage. Kevin lived near San
Francisco and he re-started playing bridge when he was 15 years old. By pure coincidence, he got to
know Mike Lawrence and came in as second, when they played a high level Pairs tournament in the late
seventieth. But in these years, his job and his family were much more important for Kevin than playing
bridge. But when he retired, about six years ago, Kevin decided to try his talents. The bridge scene in his
home country is dominated by sponsors, who are ready to invest big money in professional players.
When Kevin went to England, he first focussed on playing rubber-bridge for several years. But about 18
months ago, he got to know David Gold. When they played one of the most prominent Pairs
tournaments in England, they were successful. And since that day, they are playing together regularly
when they find the time. Kevin is really fascinated by David’s excellent bridge skills and learned already a
lot from him. Their bidding system is mostly natural, but it’s a “living” system and so they are adding
some useful conventions from time to time. Kevin absolutely loves playing bridge and he although he
has ambitious plans, he is enjoying having fun at the bridge table and meeting nice people. One nice guy
is sitting right to him here and invited him to the 6th edition of “Gro’s Supercup” last year. And when the
German Open Team was desperately looking for a new Non-Playing-Captain, it was Gro’s idea that Kevin
has all needed skills for this challenging job. It will be a completely new experience for Kevin, but all
members of the German Open Team will need his support at the upcoming event in Wroclaw and
Budapest. Fortunately Kevin speaks fluently German - his wife Anja is from Marburg. The story of Kevin’s
bridge career is another excellent example that bridge is definitely a fascinating and very international
sports. Talking with Kevin was a real pleasure and I will keep my fingers crossed that his bridge career
will go on for many years – with lots of fun and lots of success! (pb)
