allen Filmschaffenden und Filminteressierten!
WELCOME
CHRISTIAN GAIGG director of the festival
Der Großteil der Filme des Festival of Nations kommt von freien Autoren und von Studenten, die
ihre Diplomfilme einreichen. So können wir auch bei uns auf dem Land den Puls der angehenden
Filmwelt spüren. Erstmals zeigen wir auch Experimentalfilme, von der Freien Filmschule Kubelka
aus Wien, aber auch von anderen Autoren. Was unser Festival von anderen unterscheidet ist, dass
die Jury die Filmbeiträge nach jedem Filmblock öffentlich bespricht und anschließend mit den
FilmemacherInnen und dem Publikum diskutiert. Einem interessanten und spannenden Filmfest
steht also nichts im Wege.
Bedanken möchte ich mich bei den Geldgebern und Unterstützern, vor allem dem Land Oberösterreich und der Gemeinde Lenzing, aber natürlich auch bei meinem Team und den zahlreichen
helfenden Händen, ohne die das Festival nicht denkbar wäre.
Möge das Festival of Nations 2016 wieder ein vielseitiges Kulturerlebnis werden!
Welcome to all film-makers and film-interested people in Lenzing and at the Attersee!
The majority of the films shown during the festival are from independent authors and students who have
submitted their diploma films. That way the pulse of the future aspiring movieworld is also perceivable in
our rural area. For the first time we will show experimental films from the Independent Film Academy in
Vienna, as well as from other authors. The distinctive feature of our film festival is that the films shown are
publicly reviewed by the jury after each block and subsequently discussed with the author and the audience.
We are therefore looking forward to a fascinating and exciting film festival.
Additionally I want to say thank you to all sponsors and supporters, above all to the federal country of Upper Austria, the community of Lenzing, and of course to my team as well as the uncountabe helping hands
without who the festival would not have been feasible.
May the Festival of Nations 2016 once again be a versatile cultural experience!

Geschätzte AutorInnen,
werte Filmfreunde und Filmfreundinnen!
Mittlerweile kann man das „Festival of Nations“, welches in seiner Gesamtheit bereits zum 44. Mal
ausgetragen wird, in Lenzing schon als Traditionsveranstaltung benennen. Auch in der neuen Ära
der Gemeindepolitik bzw. der neuen Legislaturperiode wird die Marktgemeinde Lenzing diese
niveauvolle Bereicherung unseres Kulturlebens unterstützen.
Mit Frau Vizebgm. Mascha Auracher als neue Kulturreferentin sehe ich einer weiteren sehr guten
Zusammenarbeit hoffnungsfroh entgegen.
Ich darf nun dem 44. Festival of Nations persönlich und im Namen der Marktgemeinde Lenzing
alles Gute und viel Erfolg wünschen.
Bedanken möchte ich mich auch heuer wieder ganz besonders beim Attergauer Filmclub unter der
Leitung von Obmann Festivaldirektor Christian Gaigg!

Wichtige Plattform
FOREWORD

Der Film ist das große Massenmedium unserer Zeit. Was den Menschen in früheren Zeiten das
Theater war, ist heute der Film. Ob im Kino, im Fernsehen oder übers Internet: Im Film finden die
großen Diskurse unserer Gesellschaft statt. Im Film werden aktuelle Entwicklungen aufgegriffen.
Hier werden Themen angesprochen, die uns bewegen und Fragen gestellt, auf die es Antworten
braucht. Vor allem durch die modernen technischen Verbreitungsmöglichkeiten über das Internet
erreicht kaum ein Medium mehr so großes Publikum. Ein guter Film vermag die Massen zu bewegen.
Damit das so bleibt, muss das Medium Film sich weiterentwickeln. Filmemacher müssen sich ausprobieren und neue Formen finden. Wie so oft passiert diese Weiterentwicklung aber meist abseits
der Masse.
Seit 1973 wird diesem Experimentieren am Medium Film beim Festival der Nationen Platz geboten. Seit 1989 ist das Festival in Oberösterreich zu Hause, was mich als Kulturreferent besonders
freut. Hier finden alle die Filme eine Heimat, die ihren Platz nicht im kommerziellen Kino haben.
Dafür danke ich all jenen, die diese wichtige Plattform möglich machen, allen voran Festivaldirektor
Christian Gaigg, und wünsche allen Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern sowie dem Publikum ein
spannendes Festival!

FESTIVAL OF NATIONS What makes it special
Our international shortfilm festival takes place in Lenzing, a small village near the
lake Attersee. Every year we welcome filmmakers from all over the world.
We show fiction, animation and documentaries from 1 to 30 minutes duration. What makes our
festival special are the open discussions between jury, filmmakers and the audience right after each
film block.
Unser internationales Kurzfilmfestival findet in Lenzing statt, einem kleinen Ort in der
Nähe des Attersees. Jedes Jahr heißen wir Filmschaffende aus der ganzen Welt willkommen.
Gezeigt werden Filme aus den Kategorien Fiktion, Animation und Dokumentation (1–30 Minuten). Das
Besondere an unserem Festival ist die offene Diskussion der Jury mit dem Publikum und den anwesenden
FilmemacherInnen - unmittelbar nach jedem Filmblock.

Kai Wido works as an actor, director
and cutter in Film, Theatre and visual arts. His latest Shortfilm „Daheim“
was invited to more than 20 international festivals, had its premiere
in the competition of the renowned
„Max Ophüls Festival“ and was also
invited to Lenzing.
Kai Wido arbeitet als Schauspieler,
Regiesseur und Cutter in den Bereichen Film, Theater und Kunst.
Sein letztjähriger Kurzfilm „Daheim“
lief international auf über 20 Festivals, feierte Premiere im Wettbewerb
des Filmfestival Max Ophüls-Preis
und war auch in Lenzing zu Gast.

Doris (*1979) is the spokeswoman
of the Austrian Film Festival Forum.
She was director of Filmgalerie 8½
and espresso short film festival in
Vienna. Doris is head curator of the
international competition Fiction &
Documentary at VIS Vienna Independent Shorts.
Doris Bauer (�1979) ist Sprecherin des
Forums Österreichischer Filmfestivals.
Sie war Direktorin der Filmgalerie 8
1/2 und des Kurzfilmfestivals Espresso in Wien. Doris ist heute Hauptkuratorin des internationalen Wettbewerbs VIS Vienna Independent Shorts
in der Kategorie Fiktion & Doku.

strategies. Since two years she moderates at the Filmfest Hamburg and

Filmtage Lübeck.

Wolfgang, born in 1961, has a 20
year experience in directing (TV and
radio), acting, producing and shooting films; Right now he is producing a cinema movie called „Die beste aller Welten“ and „No paradise“,
a documentary. Wolfgang still loves
to be on stage and behind cameras.
Wolfgang ist Jahrgang 61 und nun fast
20 Jahre lang Radio und TV Redakteur,
Moderator, Schauspieler, Regisseur, Kameramann; Derzeit produziert er „Die
beste aller Welten“, einen Kinospielfilm
und „No Paradise“, Kino-Doku. Wolfgang steht immer noch gerne selbst
hinter der Kamera oder auf der Bühne.

a young inuit, needs to capture a low
flying bird in order to pass into the
world of grown-ups.

in Rechts- und Handelswissenschaften
betreibt Ingrid M. einen Wolle und
Wäsche-Laden in einem Außenbezirk
von Wien, der schlecht läuft.
Thomas lebt mit seinem Vater in einem
Wohnwagen außerhalb der Stadt. Eines Tages muss er in der Schule einen
Aufsatz über seinen Vater schreiben, der
Fabriksarbeiter ist.
Wie es die Tradition verlangt, muss Petite Neige einen niedrig fliegenden Vogel
fangen, um in die Welt der Erwachsenen aufgenommen zu werden.

Staatsgefängnis in Indiana verbracht.
Er wartet noch immer auf die Ausführung seiner Todesstrafe.

beim Song Contest 2014. Daher nimmt

The SCHOOL FOR INDEPENDENT FILM VIENNA promotes prospective filmmakers and provides artistic exchange and tuition by national and international film
artists. Founded in 2006 by Friedl Kubelka, the program is based on Dante‘s quote
„where what is willed must be“. A passionate interest in a topic and its implementation on (analog) film is what matters. The objectives of a school year are to create
independent works of film and to attain an individual position, manner of working
and understanding of film.
„Wo das Können dem Wollen folgt“. Die „Schule Friedl Kubelka für unabhängigen Film“
ist eine der wenigen Orte, an denen Film nach wie vor anhand des ursprünglich analogen
Mediums gelehrt und diskutiert wird. In zahlreichen Workshops mit internationalen Filmkünstler_innen lernen und arbeiten die Studierenden frei und unabhängig mit den Medien
Super-8 und 16mm Film. 2006 von Friedl Kubelka gegründet feiert die Schule heuer ihr
10 jähriges Bestehen.

the violation of human rights on behalf of any flag and a tribute to the
innocent victims of terror.
Um der Einsamkeit und der Geringschätzung der anderen zu entkommen,
klinkt sich Lingo in die sozialen Netzwerke ein, um Gesellschaft zu finden.
Innerhalb kurzer Zeit bemerkt er, dass
Onlinefreunde, Likes und Selfies nicht
glücklich machen.
Eine Freundschaft entwickelt sich
zwischen einem kleinen Mädchen und
einem Straßenhund. Welche Art der Beziehung ergibt sich daraus?
Als sie sich scheiden lassen will, um
ein neues Leben in Selbstbestimmung
zu beginnen, der patriarchalen Gesellschaft zum Trotz, hat das Schicksal
schon längst über eine Frau in Teheran
entschieden.
Why?! Ist eine Allegorie für Frieden
und Gewaltlosigkeit, eine Kritik an
der Verletzung der Menschenrechte im
Auftrag irgendeiner Landesflagge und
einTribut an die unschuldigen Opfer
des Terrors.

This year‘s opening starts with a traditional austrian buffet at 19:00. The official opening takes place at 20:30. After
the opening speech we will watch the films of filmblock 04. The music choir „Kawenzmänner“ will accompany the
evening. Their deep voices and sailor songs, reminding of ancient times, shall inspire and thrill you!
Um 19 Uhr starten wir mit einem traditionell österreichischen Buffet. Um 20:30 wird das diesjährige Festival offiziell eröffnet.
Nach der Eröffnungsrede sehen wir die Beiträge aus Filmblock 04. Der Chor „Kawenzmänner“ wird uns durch den Abend
begleiten. Ihre tiefen stimmen und Seemannslieder erinnern an alte Zeiten und werden uns begeistern!

In the mood for HipHop beats? Saturday evening, after the screening, a party will take place at
„Trücklheinz“, a bar near the cinema - providing drinks, funky breaks and late night laughs - we
are proud to present DJ Hazelman from Vienna. He will be playing finest tunes all night long!

friends and good food. We are organising an austrian BBQ, followed by a schnaps tasting at
Rosi’s („d`Brennerin“) highly awarded distillery in Weyregg.

After a week full of films and events, we start the closing ceremony with a tasty buffet at 19:00. After dinner we celebrate the
end of this years festival and honor the best films. The Brass Band Weyregg will play for us.

Nach einer ereignisreichen Woche wollen wir den Ausklang des diesjährigen Festivals feiern und die besten Filme des Festivals auszeichnen.
